After the $1m first year (the article says more than $1m, but not how much more, so for the sake of this exercise we'll say an even $1m) it's an average of $500k for the next 4 years. To me that's a fairly good deal for him. $600k would've been about right so $500k is a little cheaper than expected for him.

I think this contract works out well long term.

I can't believe they are willing to pay him more than one million a year.....

I think the terms for year 1 have to be matched in year 2 by the club (an afl rule I am pretty sure) and then he can be paid at a different rate afterwards, my guess..... 1m x 2 then 400k x 3 or something similar

Too soon?

I'm guessing $1M for the 1st year then 500K for years 2,3,4,5 totalling $3M.

Martin coming in on big money probably works out really well for us. Considering who we chased this year and what we have been willing to spend we must have opened up a huge amount of cap space. I would think we can structure Martin's contract in a way where it acts kind of like a salary dump. That is pay him a heap in his first year to make our TPP. We can probably throw a few of the other incoming players in the same boat there.

Hopefully our salary cap can be opened up massively next season and we can finish this list build off with some prime age stars.

I look forward to having Martin on our list but there is no guarantee that he will be a star which is why GCS rejection our offer is so damn ridiculous. He certainly could be but him for nothing and using pick 9 is huge IMO.

We had all of this salary cap money banked and had no one to pay it to. At least this way we don't lose that extra money.

That's decent coin for Martin.

Melbourne and Gold Coast supporters would be ecstatic that if they dont take him, they'll be making us pay top dollar.

See how stupid this arguement sounds when the shoe is on the other foot!
you giphed out or holding out? what gives?

He wants a mill. up front and then around 600k p.a.
He's worth it Thy and as his cyber manager I am requesting a side of oats with that.

Well that's it. Having this huge amount of money, instead of spending it on Coniglio, Papley and Martin and trading away all of our picks.

We can use our massive cap space to price out other teams and bring Martin in for free which means we keep all our first round picks and next year's second which is going to be really valuable.

The opening of the salary cap has certainly brought us something good even if it wasn't in the way we all expected it to be.

Pick 9 turns out to be a gun, Martin becomes the player we all think he can be for us and next years first and second result in really good player/s coming to the club then we are going to be laughing.

I think there are a lot of people who will still see our trade period as a fail but long term it will likely be looked back at something that worked out for the best, that's if it works out this way. Can quite easily see next years first going for Papley after Essendon lose Daniher for chicken feed next season.

In a lot of ways this is the free hit and priority pick we missed out on last year that we have needed.

I think I can deal with watching Martin, Walsh & SPS silking it up next year.....

Interesting we, on here think $600k a year for Ellis is far too much. But happy to pay the same amount for Martin who is literally still all potential.

How do we know for sure we aren't paying him 1.5M+ next year? I would think his contract for next year would be heavily frontloaded and from then on it would balance out to around what he's worth.

Surely if we were aiming for Papley, Martin, Coniglio and got Betts, Pittonett and Newnes we would be able to really front load him heavily.

Ellis chasing the biggest paycheck, Martin knocking back bigger offers from other clubs to play for us - I reckon one of those is more deserving of a slightly inflated contract.

Martin's made it abundantly clear that Carlton is the club he wants to play for. He committed, publicly, and GC made life difficult. So now we top up his contract a little to make sure Melbourne don't pilfer him against his wishes.

Betts
Pitonet
Newnes
Martin
Pick 9

Hey, that's not accurate! You have to tell the full picture.

Don't forget that to get all of that talent we had to spend a 2020 4th and picks 54 and 63 year.

Not looking so hot now, huh? :p
