And according to some sources, 45% of English vocabulary comes from French words.

Are you French/ Dutch or Flemmish speaking?

My old man is from Colmar, Alsace. Quite a few schools in that area are bi-lingual with it being right on the border. Alsatian is the local dialect.

As did every other country bordering the Germans back then. Also France were surrounded by Mussolini & Franco at the start of the war and yet the Germans could only take half the country even with 2 major allies.

The Normans ruled England though for 300 years, hence why there are plenty of French names in England. Gerrard / Lampard two examples.
You surrendered in 6 weeks like little bitches. Spain didn't participate in WW2...

Not the whole country. Franco was a Nazi ally. Mussolini was too. Every other nation that borders Germany was overrun quickly.
France ceased to be a military power after Napoleon was crushed. They became a total joke for example they were still using horses at the start of WWII against German tanks.

And English is much more of a Germanic language than a romantic one. Sure it’s got a lot of French words, but it’s based on a German dialect

Yeah French military was a joke up until WW2. This has gone way off topic lol

Not officially but Spain was well known to be impartial officially but aligned to Hitler secretly.

Hitler was so afraid of communism that he supplied Franco with weapons to aid his coup over the sitting hierarchy.

Spain being aligned with the Nazi’s is why Operation Mincemeat worked. They were counting on the Spanish officials to turn the body and briefcase over to the German’s and cause the deception.

The Luftwaffe fought in the Spanish civil war. It was kind of used as training for them.

Always surprised personally that Spain didn’t officially join the axis powers

I'm Flemish, which is just Dutch really. It's a bit like Scottish and English, I guess. We have a lot of French words that the Dutch don't use and our dialects sound different from theirs (although you get that all over Europe), but grammatically it's the same language with I'm guessing 95% the same vocabulary.

I'm from Brugge, the other side of Belgium. A 45 minute bike ride to the Netherlands and about an hour's drive to France. My dialect (West-Flemish) is the closest language (or dialect) to English.

San Marino just scored their 1st Euro 2020 qualification goal. Their first goal in 2 years and first at home in 6 years.
Wasn't San Marino ranked as the worst country in World Cup 2006 on PS2 or am I thinking of Pakistan?

They have scored 24 goals in their history, which somehow includes 3 against Belgium (only other multiple goal tally is 2 against Malta and 3 against Liechtenstein) and 1 against England. They have conceded 693 goals. Yeah, I’ll say they were ranked poorly in PS2’s World Cup 2006. :p

Northern Ireland are cooked in their group now. Davis' penalty was as bad as that guy who took out the light fixture earlier in the day. Great to watch that one.

Wales v Hungary is virtually a play off. Winner goes through in second place. I think Slovakia can still gatecrash second place?

Lol, please don't comment on something like military history, when it seems you are both ill informed about it.

France were the furthest thing from a total joke in the late 1930's, they had arguably the best armed forces in the world in the late 1930's, they were absolutely formidable. They certainly shat all over the British Army at the time of the start of the war and on paper all over the Germany Army as well.

Their undoing was the complete surprise attack through the Ardennes in a giant pincer movement by the German Army using Blitzkrieg which nobody had encountered at the time which completely annihilated them in essentially one whole action. Remembering the British would of gone the way of the French had it not been for an absolute 1-1,000,000 miracle and Hitler's incompetence at Dunkirk, the same pincer movement which destroyed the French had entrapped the entire British army as well.

With any other countries commander in WW2 at the head of German Armed Forces, Britian lose the war right there in 1940. Hitler waited and bowed to Goring's vanity with the Luftwaffe and probably as a result cost them the war. Any other commander keeps charging on, drives Britain into the sea and probably take 200k+ POW's in the process. Churchill only estimated evacuating 40,000 men from Dunkirk.

It took a further 2 years until Stalingrad and over 1 million apposing soldiers in an urban war to halt Blitzkreig.

Britain needed the USA & Canada in support in 1944, essentially 3.5 years later to take the Germans on head to head on land in Western Europe again.

Also remember the French abandoned Paris because they didn't want to see it bombed like the Germans did to Rotterdam when they invaded it.

We should be eternally grateful to the French for maintaining a city so culturally important as Paris, people hang s**t on them for surrendering when they don't actually understand the sacrifice they made. They loved their city too much to see it destroyed, they would rather submit under an invading force like the Germans than see it leveled.

As to the second point:

There's a massive misconception about the mechanized nature of the German Army during WWII, 90% of their logistical movements were done by horses, in complete comparison to the fully mechanized armies of Britain and the USA. Tanks that ran out of fuel were left by the road side, the German military mirrored the WW1 force in terms of their supply chain. This is common knowledge and came as a complete shock to Allied command as the war got deeper and deeper.

They used over 2.5 milion horses in WW2.

So you have it completely back to front I'm afraid.

Imagine WR acting like an authority on something he doesn't actually understand.

People act as if they were a pop gun army and nation.

They had an armed forces of 6,000,000 men, 1,000 tanks with a airforce of 1,100 fighters & 1,000 bombers and a Navy consisting of 70 submarines, 70 destroyers and a carrier in 1939.

Remembering that Russia, Britain, Germany, Japan & the USA accumulated most of their resources during 1939-1945.

The French never had that opportunity and packed that muscle prior to the war.

The speed at which Germany conquered Poland, Holland, Belgium and Paris is arguably the greatest military feat in history. They did it around 18 months quicker than even the German's anticipated.
