Port have a great hand this year , What did they give up ?
Thinking 2020 1st +

Port Adelaide gain - Pick 16, 52, 55 & 72
Brisbane gain- Port Adelaide 2020 First Round, Pick 29 & Pick 71.

Based off point value it values Port Adelaide's 2020 Pick as equivalent to Pick 21.

It could be a good deal if Port see themselves as finishing Top 4-6 next year; but a horrible trade by Port Adelaide if they finish outside the 8 IMO.

My take is that Port are bold when it comes to making moves to get the player(s) it wants. Worry about next year then but if they get the guy they want this year then that is what they do. People thought they gave up a lot to get pick 5 last year..but now they have Rozee who could easily end up being the most talented kid from that draft they way he is going

Personally i see it this way

#16 this year is worth #12 next year and see port finishing on the fringes of the final 8 so port have brought foward their pick by 1 year
I like it but why would brisbane do this ?

Brisbane now have #21,#29,#34,#48 = 2375 points

They are either dangling for GWS #6 or freo's #10

Smart move by Port imo , They are going all in this year combined with the 3 talented lads from last year they are fast tracking their development and talent

Unfortunately the Hinkley factor means this is a probable win for Brisbane (at face value)

Doesn’t take into account we would’ve had to use 29 on Mead so now get 16 and Mead along with next year’s draft being super compromised of a tonne of father sons and NGA picks, especially early on.

I think that's pretty much a win win trade as far as I can see it, lets us potentially get who we want and not have bids for Mead as a potential complication while Brisbane get what is most likely to be a pretty decent first round pick next year as well. Smart all around IMO 👍🏻

As far as Port are concerned this is effectively a straight swap of their 2020 first round pick for pick 16, given they'll use 52, 55, 66, 67, 68 and 72 to match for Mead.

Brisbane have done extremely well regardless of where Port finish. Win-win.

Next Minute ............................... Geelong bid pick #15 for Mead

Shouldn't this trade have been prevented as being against the rules? Port have traded in more point bearing picks than they have list spots?

I think that it’s more that we can’t use those picks, we can trade as many in as we want. We either now lose our last 3 picks in the draft for nothing due to list spots, or try and package them up for something else like moving higher up the draft or future picks.

Brisbane are doing this because they had more draft picks than list spots. They would have had to let several valuable selections go to waste otherwise since they couldn't bring them to the draft at present. This eases the burden.

Not necessarily, and I doubt either of those clubs will want to move back that far even if there is a bid.

So I guess port have to be making more trades prior to the draft.

Port will lose Picks 67, 68 and 72 if they leave everything how it is entering the draft as by my calculations they have 34 players on their senior list meaning they can only take in their first 6 picks (12, 16, 18, 52, 55, 66).

They need a minimum of 4 players so I'd expect them to use the 3 first rounders and match Mead and be done. The 3 later picks is enough to cover up to Pick 29 without going into deficit but I'm sure they will if a bid comes earlier anyway.

There is no way Port are top 6 next season.

Not really, reported they can draft minimum 4 senior list spot. What about maximum?

why not? - Rozee Butters and Duursma have now had a year at AFL level, they may have a low injury list and they should have a reasonable draw. They also have a number of other younger players where improvement can come from. I HOPE they don't from a crows perspective but it would not be the biggest shock to see them move into the top 8 and maybe do ok

Like this trade for both teams. I like how Port identify players they want and trade currency to put them in a position to get them. With picks 12, 16 and 18 they obviously have some players in mind they really like and can fast track their development with the three they draft added to Rozee, Duursma and Butters.

From the Lions point of view I'm stoked to get another first round selection next year. It is always fun to death ride an opposition team knowing there is something in it for yours as well.
