Free reign to offload the 2020 first round pick for something inside 20 this year.

First piece of the puzzle.

Or stocking ammo to live trade with clubs facing f/s and NGA bids?

Pick 30 would have been swallowed up by a bid for Maginness if he’s bid on (likely).

We traded our 2020 second round to secure Patton and Frost, meaning we had to find another 2nd rounder if we want to trade 2020 first rounder for say pick 20 this year.

This trade gives us flexibility and gives North a useful pick that could be packaged to move higher (I’m not all over Norths wants this year).

How do North win? They downgrade a pick next year and give up later picks?
Someone decent will slide to 30 that they get their hands on. Reckon whoever that is might be worth more than a 2nd rounder in a weaker and compromised draft in 2020.

I'm not so sure of that...especially if their 2nd is pick 20-25

How high in this year's draft will the hawks be able to get by using their future 1st.
They have 11 and a future 1st...it all depends on who wants it. It might be of interest to Sydney.

I can't see GC, Melb, Freo or GWS trading any picks. So that leaves Adelaide, Sydney, Carlton...

If they are after McAsey, they'd want to get pick 5 (ahead of Adelaide) which might be the plan

So North have traded a future Rd 2 (26) 729pts, Rd 3 (50) 273pts & Rd 4 (73) 9pts for a Rd 2 (30) 629pts. Why would you do that? I guess North already have two first Rd selections in 2020 & maybe they anticipated that this 2020 Rd2 (26) pick will drift lower. Would that be the case? Even if this was the case the points would probably be even. They must have some compelling motivation.

I dont get it from their end either, but I like it.

Happy for some North fans to educate me on their intentions...

So North Melbourne now 26, 27, 30, 47 & 84 in this draft as well as 2x 1st Rounders next year.

I can suspect North Melbourne have one of the two ideas:
  • They really value multiple players that are expected to go within that 25-35 range in this years draft; therefore prepared to to give up their 2020 R2 Pick (which would've been their 3rd pick in the draft due to their 2x2020 1st Rounders). Not sure who they value enough though to want to do that
  • That they are expecting Melbourne to bid on Tom Green and will try and do a trade with GWS for 26 (729 points), 27 (703 points) & 30 (629 points) for Pick 4.

Brady Rawlings pulled some pretty audacious and successful stunts like this for your lot.

I think the plan is to get two top 20 picks + Finn instead of trying to get inside the top 10.

Hawks future 1st alone would get pick 15 at best from the Suns in this draft.

Packaged with pick 11 this year, it may get 5 from swans or 6 from crows with something coming back later in either year.
