Certified Legendary Thread China History in the Making Part 2

Kochie at the after match last night spoke about a big announcement this week. Then noticed in the Age today a good read about Port and China adventure they expect a further announcment as the PM will be in China this week.

m.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-makes-china-television-debut-with-port-adelaide-broadcast-deal-20160408-go2cma.html

'The initiative, which represents the most significant step to market the game to the worlds largest audience since a 2010 exhibition match between Melbourne and Brisbane in Shanghai, came after a two-year effort by Port to seek partnerships and commercial arrangements in China. A further announcment is expected to coincide with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's visit to China next week.'

Looks like an exciting week ahead for Port fans with the next step in our clubs China partnership being announced. What has been a few years of hard work by commited ,talented and passionate people (our Lockhart Road one of many) has our club hopefully assured of not only a future but a strong future both as a footy club and as part of our community.

Am very glad to hear of Tony Zhang’s appointment as the Club’s ‘feet on the ground’ in China, especially Shanghai.

(NB PAFC Media: his name is not ZHANG as far as Club messaging goes, that’s impolite. It is Tony, or Tony Zhang, or Mr. Zhang. Do unto others as you ask them to do unto you.)

I expect Tony’s HQ will be in the new AFL premises in Australia House, Shanghai.

This now makes PAFC look like pros when it comes to China. Excellent development leading up to 2020.

It’s all about guanxi - connections - and from his background and qualifications my guess is that Tony has quite a few of his own in different places and at different levels in China.

So glad to see this happening so soon after we position a specialist like Andrew Day on the PAFC Board.

Now to generate some real commercial revenue out of the China adventure.

I’ll keep my comments as is for now. My own connection/s with the Club seem to be re-establishing themselves - up to a certain level in the hierarchy (but don’t tell anyone ... especially about the meeting I’m scheduled to enjoy in Pro Drinkers Corner tomorrow evening; it’s all about bridges, rebuilding thereof).

This sort of thing is so far outside my wheelhouse its not funny, but I am very glad its starting to look like some common sense decisions are being made.

Interesting that the article barely mentioned KT and Koch wasn't mentioned at all...perhaps we should funnel more news through this Independent source.

Concur. So long as we don’t lose sight of Tom Richardson’s strong personal Crow bias. Such a bias can on occasions be engineered to our advantage.

Andrew Hunter gave Tom Richardson an exclusive before he went to Shanghai for the China International Import Expo. Richardson was Ch 9's chief political reporter for 15 years or so, before he finished up a couple of years ago, so he would have had a relationship with Andrew when he was working as Jay Weatherill's speech writer.

So Andrew gives Tom an exclusive and Tom then gets a bit of credit and acknowledgement for writing an in depth article about our China strategy that goes past the standard footy story. Has a bit of meat to it re international trade and international politics. Indaily then knows it will get good coverage outside its normal readership.

So its an article about what Andrew is doing / has done not what KT or Koch have done. Its a symbiotic relationship between Andrew and Tom where both benefit.

Koch pumping up Tony Zhang's appointment.

And Andrew Hunter and Trade Minister Birmingham at the opening of the New Australia House building in Shanghai where Oz Chamber of Commerce, the Oz consulate, AFL and I suspect Tony Zhang will be housed. I posted The Australian's Deal magazine article about Aussies moving to Shanghai and Australia House and the Oz-Chinese Melbourne-born architect Alexandra Chu who designed the building, three pages back at

Awesome LR, that is great news!

Not much new in that article, but still good to keep the flag flying in a national paper
The other thing is that Mike Smith of the AFR has only been their China correspondent for about 18 months and unlike The Australian's China correspondents Glenda Korporaal and Rowan Callick who are/were based in Beijing, Smith is based in Shanghai, so speaking to him regularly when we do something major in China, and Andrew Hunter doing a one on one, just makes good sense.

The message might be repeated and nothing new to us, but its good PR in the nation's most influential business newspaper. And after all the China Strategy is more a business than footy.

I still think that two double-headers would be the way to go. Footy would open and close the Festival of Australia.

Ever year, Port, Saints, Gold Coast, and an invitee would play in China.

Saints hosts Power.
The invitee hosts Saints.
Gold Coast hosts both Power and the invitee.

Teams play on Thursday/Friday; travel to China; play on Sunday; play on Saturday; travel back to Australia; have a bye.

Didn't we have some sort of relationship with this company in the early days of the China strategy? I don't see their name on the China partners list now...

Chinese company's $1.5b bid for Bellamy's given green light by Frydenberg

The $1.5 billion sale of Tasmania-based infant formula company Bellamy's Organic to China Mengniu Dairy Company is now a near certainty, after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg gave conditional approval to the deal.

In a statement released on Friday, Mr Frydenberg said the Foreign Investment Review Board's (FIRB) "unanimous" recommendation for the deal to be approved came after extensive consultations on a wide range of matters.
Mr Frydenberg has imposed a range of conditions on the deal, which he said were to ensure that the acquisition was "not contrary to the national interest."

The conditions include that Bellamy's keep its headquarters in Australia for at least 10 years, that the majority of its board be Australian resident citizens, and that at least $12 million be invested in improving, or establishing, infant milk formula processing facilitates in Victoria.

Shane Smith no longer appears as Head of Operations, China - now only PAFC Chief Financial Officer.

Tony Zhang Tao makes appearance on staff list as Chief Representative - Greater China. (My definition of ‘Greater China’ covers the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions, and also Taiwan.)

Thought I would put in the official club take on the 2018 game as recorded in our 2018 Yearbook which historians will use as a reference point. Hopefully 2019 Yearbook is out early next year and not May like this year. I put the 2017 Yearbook write up on the game at page 348 at this link.

You can't download the 2018 Yearbook but can watch it online at

Good that at least in the official book, because we don't seem to in other in other club outlets, it talks about Nico Teng coming on board as a general footy club sponsor and his Haneco Lighting to a premier partner after he joined the China Power Club. He brought his building company Greaton on to sponsor the China game at end of 2016, then Haneco lighting in 2017 and end of 2017 announced that in 2018 and 2019 Haneco would be sleeves sponsor on official club polos.

These type of sponsorships should be put in the China net gains accounting to show the true picture. Whilst our financial return from China isn't great, proper accounting of all aspects, would make our fans more comfortable with our efforts on this front. But it probably shows up the rest of the club for making a loss.

“The 2020 Shanghai game provides a wonderful opportunity for all football fans to immerse themselves in the traditional Chinese culture and experience watching an AFL match in one of China’s most cosmopolitan cities...

“The annual match is more than just playing a game for premiership points on foreign soil, it’s about expanding the game to new audiences both here and abroad, which is key for the progression of our game.

“The match itself is like nothing our fans in Australia would have experienced before, so it’s
a wonderful opportunity for Australian-based football fans to travel to China and experience the excitement for themselves.”
