If we do go De Koning and Jones then at least we cant complain we are overlooking talls.
We both can and will

Targeting talls doesn’t mean ’waiting for the shittest ever talls draft and then burn first round picks on guys who would be lucky to be late 2nds in a normal draft’

Here is the All Oz U/18 team this year. Twomey has pick 19 of the 23 in his top 30.

Left out Budarick, O'Neil, Mead and Sharp

Here is the NAB League U/18 Team of the Year and all 7 Vic Country and 3 Vic Metro kids who made the ALL Oz team, made the NAB league team of the year, which isn't always the case that the Vic All Oz players, make the U/18 NAB/TAC team of the year.

I think since Burgo came back, the default Port position for phantom drafters, is to allocate the skinniest talls to Port, if it looks like we might take a tall or two.

Don't forget one of them will really be a top ten pick+29!

Sydney confirmed that after GWS had already traded ahead of 5. So they're no longer forcing GWS to use up their top 10 pick on him. Bidding on Green now just becomes a bit of a dick move in wiping GWS out of the draft this year and early next. So all they'd be doing is generating bad blood between the clubs.
So basically Adelaide are dick heads and everyone else tries to get along?

Trading out of next years first and Howard to pick up 2 skinny long term project talls in de Koning and Jones would be a very dissapointing result. Especially if we pair them with either skinny long term project mid sizers in day or Bergman. We absolutely have to pick a pure mid, even if that is kemp (who is not a pure mid yet). Robertson would be great.

You mean like Mead?

wild to think Gould, who earned u18 honours last year against actual good players, might slide later than spud like De Koning

Gould over de Koning for me too, every day of the week. I know he lacks height, but surely he is a ready made good quality afl player.

how often do you reckon a third tall turns out to be Nat Fyfe vs they turn out to be a third tall?
By definition that can only happen once. But hundreds of times juniors who play in one position end up in another. My point is, you say you went off Bergman because he has only played forward. Well...

Junior Robbie Gray only played forward
Junior Houston only played forward
Junior Hartlett only played midfield
Junior Rockliff only played the vast majority forward
Junior Howard played mostly forward
Junior Buckley played mostly outside mid (playing against men)
Junior Roger James played outside mid
Junior Senior Burgoyne played mostly forward
Junior Senior Cornes played mostly forward
Junior Tredrea played outside mid
Junior Tim Evans played back

We need forwards. At our first pick we should get a player who will start forward who has scope to move into the midfield later and Bergman has that. So does Kemp and so does Robertson (who I prefer) but at least Bergman fits the bill.

If we pick talls in a weak draft and they fail it makes it easier to go back to almost exclusively drafting flankers.

Left field idea;

If:

The scenario is that we have used our 3 first round selections tonight and Gould is still available early in the second round.

Then:

We use that stack of third rounders that we have stockpiled (some of which are currently going to be wasted) to trade back into the second round and take him, and simply absorb the deficit from next years second round pick.

Under that scenario we effectively take Gould using 2020 second round currency but still get to use that 2020 pick albeit with diminished value.

Would also mean we get to spend 2019 third round currency that currently stands to go up in smoke which is a net gain compared simply letting them disappear.

Three firsts + Early Second + Mead would be one hell of a haul this year and IMO would more than make up for trading out of the first couple of rounds of next years draft, bearing in mind that we would not actually be losing next years pick, simply devaluing it.

shewho I am ok with drafting forwards to be forwards, just have trouble with believing we should draft forwards because they might become Nat Fyfe-esque mids.

At Port we have had so many ”he’s a flanker but with midfield potential” types and they largely stay flankers. Hartlett the primest example imaginable.

If we can’t make a case for ’Bergman as a career-long flanker’ being worthwhile in and of itself then I’d suggest theres better options. If we can make that case, and that has him high enough priority for us to draft, great.
