Fantastic night for the Club

The GIANTS have added some dash to their backline by selection Lachlan Ash from the Murray Bushrangers at pick four in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.

GIANTS National Recruiting Manager Adrian Caruso said: “Lachlan stands out for his run and carry off half-back.

“He performed strongly at all levels over the last three years and co-captained Vic Country in 2019.

“We feel like his ability to attack and use his speed to create is important in the modern game which is why we are delighted to bring him in.

“While Lachie has played most of his football down back, we think down the track there might be some scope for him to play other roles.

“His competitive nature and drive gives us confidence he will become a key member of our side.”

Ash – who was named in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian team – possesses line-breaking speed and the ability to read the ball exceptionally well.

A fantastic leader, Ash averaged 23 disposals in his four games as Vic Country co-captain in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Clean by foot, Ash can also play through the midfield as he demonstrated when he returned to the Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League.

The 18-year-old averaged 23 disposals per game for the Bushrangers in 10 games to cap off an impressive season.

Perfect choice, exactly what’s needed right now which is run from defence

Brilliant trade to get him. Never mind Green, there’s every chance Adelaide would have drafted Stephens at 4 and then Sydney Ash at 5.

If Adelaide’s given up the next Lachie Whitfield then my annoyance will only be tempered by the fact GWS will have him...

Nice interview, his most preferred option was always NSW.

Every interview you read or see with this young man is impressive.

Fingers crossed he has no injuries/bad luck and gets a good crack at it because if he does I have no doubt he will be a star.

The prophecy was realised, and now a two year extension.

Our club has a very special player and person in Lachie Ash.

It doesn't quite fit the description of a No.4 draft pick, and it’s certainly not how he thought he’d deployed in the typically critical third season of AFL development, but it might just be the making of him: Lachie Ash, the tagger.

It’s a role he insists is only temporary, but one being fulfilled with aplomb right now. And there is confidence that it will act as a steep learning curve for when the 20-year-old is entrusted with winning the ball for the GIANTS himself, sometime soon. When Ash strolled out to the centre square of GIANTS Stadium in round three and stood shoulder to shoulder with Touk Miller, it was clear he had been tasked with stopping one of the best players, never mind ball-winners, in the AFL. He did that as well as one can possibly hope to right now in a battle with the Gold Coast Suns star, keeping him to just 17 touches and three clearances. Ash’s elite running ability, tackling acumen and discipline are the attributes that Leon Cameron highlighted in the wake of his Touk Miller conquest as to why he has assumed chief tagging duties at the GIANTS.

It might not be a ploy used every week but it is one that is clearly working for Leon Cameron. And the diligent Shepparton product, is happy to carry out the duty. “When you’re doing something well and it’s benefiting others, there’s no better feeling really,” he told AFL.com.au. “Just executing your role and helping those around you achieve the common goal, it’s very, very satisfying. It can be good because you just get stuck in your own little battle and become fixated on that and it’s easy to determine how you’re going. But you’re also out there to get the footy and it takes a little bit away from that,” he continued. Ash’s elite running ability, tackling acumen and discipline are the attributes that Leon Cameron highlighted in the wake of his Touk Miller conquest as to why he has assumed chief tagging duties at the GIANTS. But the role is still one that requires a full week of preparation and concentration in order to master it. “Doing it for four quarters is probably the hardest thing!" Ash said.

The big big sound is getting louder, with rising star Lachie Ash making the “easy decision” to re-commit to the GIANTS for two more years.

Ash, the number four pick in the 2019 AFL Draft, has elevated his game to another level under new coach Adam Kingsley this season to emerge as one of the AFL’s most lethal running defenders.

Ash said the direction of the club under Kingsley was key in choosing to ink the new two-year deal and remain with the GIANTS until the end of the 2025 season.

The 22-year-old, a former Vic Country co-captain, had previously been trialled in several roles throughout his first three seasons but has since blossomed under Kingsley and his staff in a more permanent role in defence.

The move has catapulted Ash into the conversation as one of the AFL’s most improved players, upping last year’s season average of 16.1 touches per game to 23.6 per game in 2023 - ranking him elite among his position across the competition.

The dashing half-back flanker also ranks ‘above average’ across the AFL in kicks (15.4 per game), handballs (8.2 per game), meters gained (407.5m per game), and marks (5.4 per game).

One of a number of GIANTS in the midst of the best season of their careers, Ash said the club was creating an environment that allowed its talented young list to thrive.
