Of all the kids, in all the positions we could have drafted, we have gone for 2 things we absolutely have a plenty of: a ruck/forward and yet another half back flanker

We desperately needed at least one midfielder

I look at the ruckman we got, and I see Tony Notte all over again, a very physically light "project player"

Even more happy we traded for Tim Kelly now because even though we didn't have much to work with, I don't like these selections at all

We will revisit these kids in a couple of years and I hope they prove me wrong.
Think it’s better to have a couple of players capable of playing AFL than a couple of midfielders who have no chance
With our picks it was always going to be best available

Not upset with either pick, to be honest. Would have been an interesting discussion at the 2nd pick, I wouldn’t have been unhappy with Garcia either.

Johnson looks quick and has a decent kick on him- seems quite composed with the ball. Will be given time to develop- with that kick he could be a replacement for Jetta down the track.

Jamieson looks a promising ruck, albeit very raw- he’s got time to develop under the best playing coach in the business in NicNat.

All things considered. Not a bad result. Wouldn’t be surprised if we went mature age tomorrow.

Current rucks are 3 guys over or very close to 30, two of who are very injury prone. Plus one of them is a backup ruck at best (Vardy)

And then Williams, who looks very promising but hasn't played a full game on his own as a ruck at WAFL level yet.

The 40th best mid in this draft wasnt going to solve our perceived midfield problem (that I don't agree we have). The 3rd/4th best young ruck does solidify that area significantly however.

Can someone confirm if Freo upgraded one of its later picks just to pass?
They upgraded 2 picks for the price of 1 . The two guys they might have got were Johnson who we rescued by jumping them and prior who brissy picked after us .
They then picked up a roughy with the first then passed with the second of the upgraded picks

Yep, Freo must have been keen on Johnson or Prior. Given we decided to trade to leapfrog them, we must have thought Johnson was high in their thoughts.

We have Watson and Rotham who will get games before him. Still have Cole and Duggan who both missed finals as well. We actually have shitloads of HBF
I agree that we're generally well-stocked down back. But still, the thought of one of these listed players taking on the kick-in duties full time scares me a little.

You would think shep would be next in line and once hurn retires rotham should be his replacement and is a pretty consistent kick in wafl doing the kick ins . Also nelson is pretty consistant when not under pressure

Correct

The way johnson moves he reminds me of brent guerra .

Stocky leg build, quick with a leathal kick

Jamerson to me is a ruck not a ruck forward . He played more forward in the champs looking a bit lost but did his job bringing the ball to ground where we had a plethora of fleet footed talented smalls.

He really had a good second half of the colts season when he was the main ruck and not 2nd fiddle like in the u18 champs . Hard to shine when your behind the highest drafted ruck since natanui

I remember seeing TB on draft day and being disappointed at as drafting a skinny KPP. Yeah Jamieson could be another Notte or he could also be a late bloomer. In his interviews with 7 he said that he's like 5cm taller than what he was this time last season.

Also we seem to have a decent track record of developing talls taken later in the draft.

Yeah, personally, I like our 2 picks. Both of them are very talented - promising. Well done Vozzo and O'Brien.

Gotta feel for poor Bondy there.. all the sweet apples are gone from the board, mostly melons left & understandably, kiwis.
Looking at the sweet chili sauce because he wants to dip a pie there due to WCE Bigfooty putting the heat on for something spicy.
Crazy Vozzo, Windscreens O'Brien & the bloke at far screen all sampled the rice wrap tuna thing, which created more stress.
Hope there's a defibrillator nearby for 007 tonight. Windscreens most likely bloke to have one & also my first choice for eating the only meatball.

By my calculations we should have five spots available, with four of them likely to be used in the Rookie draft:

R1: homegrown key defender (Pasini)
R2: mature midfielder (Bolton)
R3: B.Ah Chee
R4: H.Brayshaw

SSP: J.Pickett

What time is the rookie draft on tomorrow, guys?

We don't desperately need a midfielder. Last years draft we targeted mid-fielders, this year we grabbed Kelly.. Rucks are hit and miss which I agree but there is at least 20 mids available every draft ready to go... our mids stocks are fine.
But if one of our best 6-7 mids goes down over the next 2-3 years, who've we got to come in? Ainsworth/Brayshaw/Ah Chee/O'Neill maybe in a year or so. That's pretty poor depth I think.
And in 2-3 yrs time when Redden and Hutchings especially, and Shuey maybe, are gone or on the wane big time, who do we replace with as a best 22 mid. None of Ainsworth/Ah Chee/Brayshaw would you want as best 22. O'Neill an unknown, but he's got a very long way to go.
Yet in the backline, outside our best 7 (Gov Barrass Shep Hurn Jetta Duggan and say Schoey) we've still got Cole, Watson and Nelson - who have all shown they're adept, plus Rotham who deserves a run at it, plus Allen and Brander who both are capable of being swung back (and Brander may need to go back to get a chance to cut it at AFL), plus even Edwards who people are talking up.
So why draft another HBF!?!?
I've had it up to here with these recruiters/list managers, after drafting flankers for years hoping they'd be mids, then foregoing the opportunity to take Kelly at a cheaper price only to pay a King's Ransom for him later.

Other than getting lucky there are 3 ways to get quality midfielders. Have a really bad year to get an early draft pick or give up a really good player to get an early draft pick or give up multiple picks like we did for Kelly. Only the third option guarantees you get a gun, the first two are speculative. I am looking forward to watching TK go to work for us next year.
Very quickly off the top of my head I can think of a number of quality mids who came with late picks.....
Lachie Neale
Worpel
Priddis a rookie
Zorko a rookie
Rockliff a rookie
Barlow a rookie
Matthew Boyd a rookie
Kirk a rookie
K.Simpson
Tom Phillips

Or thereabouts. I'm sure there are others too

A bloke called Marlion Picket went pretty cheap last year as well......
