Were any of those players even in the top 50 afl players last season? Based on the expert opinion or the pundit.
Probably not but they were clear best 22 for the teams they played for.

Rozee finished 4th in Port's B&F, Duursma finished 9th. Walsh finished 4th in Carlton's B&F. Stack was 13th in Richmond (the Premiers') B&F.

Is Mundy an oversight or have you all written him off?

Logue Hamling Ryan

Wilson Pearce Young

Aish Cerra Bewley

Conca Taberner Walters

Lobb Mundy Matera

Followers: Darcy, Fyfe, Brayshaw

Interchange: Hill, Blakely, Tucker, Henry

Hogan not ready round one.
Mundy instead of Cam McCarthy at FF for several reasons, or Blakely out and Mundy on the IC
Another option for FF is Logue for McCarthy with Hughes coming in at the BP
Henry inland from bench on to help give speed in forward line.
Acres and Hill taken by Young and Bewley to give more pace and penetration. Hard call.
Cerra in the middle to finally show his stuff.

Time to put the 2018 draftees in the action.

I’d put Young in at HB instead of Blakely and then bring Conca in on the bench. Competition for places is going to be red hot - Freo’s best ever squad?

Putting together a best 22 with a new coach and new gameplan is easier said than done. So, I've broken the list down into tiers based on the 18 on-field roles at any one time. I've tried to keep things as like-for-like as possible.

Tier 1
FB: Wilson Hamling Logue
HB: Ryan Pearce Conca
C: Aish Fyfe Hill
HF: Matera Taberner Serong
FF: Walters Hogan Lobb
FOL: Darcy Brayshaw Tucker

Tier 2
FB: Carter O'Reilly Hughes
HB: Young Watson Blakely
C: Acres Mundy Bewley
HF: Sturt McCarthy Switkowski
FF: Henry Cox Dixon
FOL: Meek Cerra Crowden

Tier 3
FB: ---
HB: Duman--
C: Giro Banfield Frederick
HF: --Colyer
FF: Schultz--
FOL: -North Valente

In reality you’re probably right but imo at this stage these kids should not be considered best 22 until they’ve earned it.

These guys were taken top 10 for a reason and may well earn the opportunity by round one.
I am extremely confident that all three will come in and work very hard.

Why the confidence?

Because all three have done it in the past.

All three have high footy iq, professionalism and leadership traits.

I want all three to play round 1. Sure, as the season wears on, then give them breaks.

Plus, Henry and Serong can play forward straight away and Young is a gun quarterback.

Cerra and Blakely moved into the midfield.

Either way I think both will be in. not sure what JLo will do but we don’t necessarily have a record of starting first round rookies. Maybe that will change this year.

The experienced guys need the first crack at it imo, especially now that we’re practicing skills and it’s such a big focus. We might just see a few players improve their worth to the team in a big way.

Young over Hughes and Duman is a big call this early on for that reason alone. But also as we don’t know how Young will cope with an AFL prep or how he’ll go up against AFL men.

One area that is a weakness and we can’t really improve the experienced players on is pace in the forward line and therefore I think Henry, Fredrick and/or Serong deserve to be looked at early if they’re ready. It’s a desperate need imo.

Ryan Hamling Logue
Wilson Pearce Conca
Hill Fyfe Aish
Walters Hogan McCarthy
Henry Tabs Matera
Lobb Brayshaw Mundy
Cerra Blakely Tucker Acres

First few games and add the newbies as they come to terms with the big time.
Really tough to name a side with the new depth we have. Most on here will have their own ideas on selection. Don't think any will be wrong.
Darcy, Hughes , Duman , Switta all deserve a spot , selection will be tough if they all stay healthy

I like the Darcy omission tbh

Young to debut straight away. Henry and Serong to have a couple games in the WAFL. Wouldn’t be surprised to see one take Materas spot early.
Pressure on Blakely and Tucker to perform.

for the finals

B Logue Hamling Ryan
HB Wilson Pearce Young
C Hill Cerra Bewley
HF Walters Hogan Henry
F Taberner Lobb Matera
R Darcy Fyfe Conca
IC Mundy Aish Serong Tucker

E Blakely, Acres, Cox

IC all as midfield rotations as a preference

Tried to get Blakely & Acres there, but they will have to be emergency.
Sturt to replace Mundy when the time is right.
I'm bullish on Bewley having a breakout season.

I would hate if we didn't start Darcy as the No1 ruck if fit, Lobb is the perfect Forward/Ruck and IMO is a very average number 1 ruck. Enjoy the differing opinions on Darcy but I just can't see how he is left out if fit.
Some of our best wins against top 4 teams this year were when Lobb was the #1 ruck. GWS, Brisbane, Collingwood...

I want Darcy to grab the spot with both hands but if he doesn't I don't think it should just be gifted. Also, Meek will go beast mode next year and earn a debut imo.

I'm bullish Bewley as well, he's got the tank, just needs to improve decision making under pressure (no orphan there)
He's a deadly kick when on song

I don't think you can make the leap that Lobb being the number 1 ruck was the catalyst for those wins, he was also part of some bad losses as the number 1 ruck. IMO he just isn't good enough to hold down that spot, wasn't when required at GWS and hasn't been when required by us. He is however probably the best forward/ruck in the game and we should be playing to that strength.

Overall how good is it that we have two young up and coming rucks and a bloke who can play FF/ruck. I am a massive fan of what we have done in that position since losing Sandi (few years now).
