Marnus Labuschagne

They do tend to give players who take to test cricket a go in the ODI side, and to add to that he has been excellent for Qld in the one day cup the last 3 seasons he has played (2016, 17 and this year. Not sure how he'll go at 4 with Smith at 3 though, perhaps a little too similar? Has to be a better option than batting Usman out of position at 3 and Smith out of position at 4 like we were in the WC, though.

Will be interesting, our ODI side has been good the last period of time

Wade was in great form though and head looked better in the home summer, it really seemed the right call to leave him out of that series based on what went on in his short test career up to that point.

and what about Khawaja who can't play a moving ball to save his life..

and what about Khawaja who can't play a moving ball to save his life..

He was competing with people like head kurtis pattinson and wade for a middle order spot at that time, nobody including the selectors were considering him in the top order at that time.

You can say it was obvious he should have been our number 3 at the start of the ashes but it wasn't obvious and few if any were calling for him to be our number 3 which is why it ended up being such a pleasant surprise he stepped in and did what he did.

He looks like a world class number 3 in the making, if he’s not already.

Average is up to 47.

I think he will be averaging 50+ by the end of the summer and at 26 years old and enough of a sample size home and away, it’s fair to say he’s in the best couple of batting prospects in world cricket outside of the big 4.

A combo of Smith and Labuschagne at 3 & 4 and a 26 year old Pat Cummins will see us very close to the top of world cricket for the foreseeable future.

Another test, another score past 50... it might not last forever but gee he racked up a lot of credits in the past 6 months and continues to do so.

A high quality 50 as well, had to weather a difficult start and has cashed in since.

Really like him for the ODI side now. Rotates the strike really well and is more of a solid middle order option to fill that no.4 spot rather than an opener like Khawaja/S.Marsh

I'd hope Cricket Australia take a serious look at Lab's development. If you look before his County stint he was much like our other FC batsmen who are solid enough but never put any consistency together and any high honour call ups look like handouts.

Once he got into his County stint something dramatically changed, was it the brilliance of the County system? Certainly not as English batting is even worse then ours but it seems like something about consistent learning in particularly tough conditions were the missing piece in his game.

Doubt it will work for everyone but what we do on our own here in Australia clearly doesn't work so it might be worth at looking at a clear example of a player turning a corner and try and do similar with our other young players.

I was completely wrong about him. Thought if he ever did come on, it would take a fair bit longer than it has. Absolutely loving watching the right-handed Mike Hussey go about his business. Very classy indeed.

The most worrying thing is that it literally took his Glamorgan coach, Matt Maynard one single net session to notice and correct a flaw of his where his bat was coming down from gully. He sorted him with that back and across trigger he's using now which apparently keeps his eyes level too. Went from a shield season averaging 24 to one of the best bats in the world. Give Maynard a job.

Have read Jason Gillespie working with Ishant Sharma in the county system pushed him to the next level as well.

If only it was that simple, he made some decent scores against Sri Lanka as well people forget.

Hard work, confidence and obviously Maynard picked a fault, but I doubt he’s some super batting coach genius.

Expensive finish to his spell this afternoon but showed enough to prove himself as the best of the part time options. Should have broken this partnership when he found Yasir’s edge but Smith insists on fielding as a deep slip. He is becoming a favourite player of mine.
