So the coach has nothing much to do with the way the team plays and the way the team is prepared mentally. Glad we cleared that up.
It is ALL about leadership. In the World Wars, the Italian platoons would be just as good as the German's whenever led by German officers.

I agree. Let's recruit Rommel.

It's funny how people view lists as being dynasty types after the fact. Looking back in hindsight, every team in the league would have won a flag if they had played to their potential - St Kilda and Fremantle know this better than most.

It's like Richmond - the nucleus of that team is the same as the one Port smashed in 2014. 8 of the players that Macca now rates as being A or B class players - Rance, Grimes, Houli, Cotchin, Martin, Reiwoldt, Lambert, Vlastuin - were part of that team. Were they A or B type players back then? Rance was an A. Martin, Cotchin and Reiwoldt were Bs. The others? Not a chance.

So it took them 3-4 years to become the team that you see today, adding players like Rioli, Prestia and Caddy to the mix. And why did they improve? Because near enough wasn't good enough - they weren't playing football for the recognition of being a tough team to play against, or to make up the numbers in finals, but to win flags.

It's not about building the greatest list of all time. Just the greatest list of your time.

I want a list that would be disappointed that it didn't win more than one flag. Since our inclusion into the AFL, these have been the premiers:

Hawthorn - 4 flags, 5 grand finals
Brisbane - 3 flags, 4 grand finals
Geelong - 3 flags, 4 grand finals
Adelaide - 2 flags, 3 grand finals
Sydney - 2 flags, 4 grand finals
West Coast - 2 flags, 4 grand finals
Richmond - 2 flags, 2 grand finals

Only Port Adelaide (2 grand finals), Collingwood (2 grand finals - the replay doesn't count), North Melbourne (2 grand finals), Essendon (1 grand final) and the Bulldogs (1 grand final) have won solitary flags.

What's the common denominator among all those teams? Players who were willing to sacrifice their personal game for the benefit of the collective. Can you seriously close your eyes and imagine the 2015-17 Port Adelaide teams, with the attitude that they displayed on the field, being included in that elite group, alongside the likes of Hawthorn, Brisbane, Geelong, Sydney and West Coast?

The 2014 team that had players that would run themselves into the ground to provide an option for teammates could have. Unfortunately, that team disappeared for reasons known only to the players.
Janus, I find your contrarian views interesting and entertaining. But come on! Ask anyone at the club in 2014/15 and they were trumpeting the team and club for sustained success. So were you at the time. So was everyone, including the media. That view continued through our recruitment campaigns of Dixon, Ryder, Rocky etc.

The team, the club, the coaches, led by KKK, have failed miserably. The mere fact that Wines and/or his camp entertained thoughts of him leaving speak volumes that this was opportunity wasted.

Oh we had a top four list alright. And the club knew it. Koch knew it and called it out. Either bad luck Dixon busting his leg, or bad management, not having a back up ruck to a one legged Ryder, or a coaching disaster often at the selection table, or all the above, killed us. But that is the past now and we are rebuilding for sure. The Fab Three (Motlop, Watts, Rockliff) was to push us over the edge to success, but that spectacular attempt is now travelling us down a different path.

The Fab Three (Motlop, Watts, Rockliff) was to push us over the edge to success, but that spectacular attempt is now travelling us down a different path.

The footy department bought into the hype sadly with the recruitment of Ryder. That trade was perhaps the stupidest thing we could've done and stuffed us up monumentally. That was the moment we ****ed up and the rest of it has been trying to right the ship since.

We brought in a ruck who could chip out as a forward to play as a forward who could chip out in the ruck. We did this while our existing number 1 ruckman was coming off his career best year, had signed a long term deal and was our vice captain. We knew that Ryder would almost certainly get suspended by WADA at the time (there was absolutely no way they'd let it stand as precedent that clubs could just not keep records of injections and get off scott free) and we paid a shittonne to get him.

Then one year later, as if to fully accept that we traded in the wrong guy we recruit a big forwarding who can chip out in the ruck, having pushed Lobbe out of the team so that Ryder could be number 1 ruck.

We then changed our trade period philosophy a year later and now focus on the draft / free agents, having realised you can get good players via free agency while picking high end talent at the same time. The one thing you cant get this way is guys in the 22-25 bracket, which is now our problem.

Motlop, Watts, Rockliff and the other free agents was just the most cost effective way to replace all the depth we lost that year. Impey, Ah Chee, Young, Trengove, Austin and Lobbe all left that off season. We'd already used our first round draft pick from that year for SPP/Marshall the year earlier. So our options were to replace all our depth with guys in the 3rd or 4th rounds, trade out of the elite 2018 draft, or get free agents in as replacements.

Going after Ryder was the right call at the time. Perhaps some more effort could have been taken to get him to take a separate deal with WADA, but those wheels would have well and truly been in motion anyway.

Our list now has an interesting mix of older and younger players. It’s a very GWS style list. Each line has 4-5 experienced/older players and 8-10 younger players.

I can see each of the line coaches being told they have to play half experienced players and half young ones. We invested last year in Butters Rozee and Duursma and I can only see us doing that again this year with Bergman Williams Mead and Georgiades.

So we may be in for another year of inconsistency. I’m not sure what this deliberate tactic of investing in the next generation means for Ken and some of the older players, but it’s what we have to do.

GWS have Greene, Cameron, Coniglio, Whitfield, Kelly, Haynes, Williams, etc, all mid 20s and in the prime of their careers.

GWS' list is nothing at all like our list.
Don’t sweat it, a well drilled team with an effective gameplan can beat a team full of first rounders......oh wait

He didn't say the lists were the same or equal in quality! He said it had the "same style"

Big difference.

It's not the same style at all. GWS have a glut of players in their prime with a sprinkling in the younger and older groups. We're the exact opposite of that.

They have a bucket load of good players! But looking at the demographics, it's not too dissimilar IMO. They have more prime players, 17 vs 13, and they are of much better class. But Port has got more next-tier players, and some serious class in our younger players.

My point was the GWS blueprint of setting up a side was go with a bunch of oldies, a bunch of young ones and not much in between. Brogan Cornes Shaw Deledio and the first round draft picks. GC tried to spread it much more- Ablett, Harbrow, Ward, May, Risticelli

We have sold off that middle group- Wingard Polec Howard Pittard Young Hombsch- kept the oldies and invested in the 18 year olds. It’s not the traditional way to rebuild which is shoot everyone over the age of 26.
