Apples, you and I have had that conversation.
Nick's got infested by argumentative types that criticised each other's posts for no discernible benefit, added nothing and just wanted to have an argument with each other. It dominated the site, particularly as other contributors interest in hanging around dropped off.

That's a shame. I do remember discussing the situation at Nick's some time ago, but I thought you were pretty happy to inhabit both spaces.
Nick's was a sensational place for me when I lived overseas for 11 years; it really kept me in the loop. Unfortunately, I had issues with the standard of moderation there, which caused me to leave after 14 years or so. It wasn't a decision I took lightly.

For the record, Phillips was 2 seconds ahead of his time of 6:08 last year.

Here are some comparisons:
Tom Phillips 6:06 (2019) 6:08 (2018) 6:04 (2017)
Max Lynch 6:36 6:30
Nathan Murphy 6:29 6:33 6:32
Brody Mihocek 6:51 6:42
Brayden Sier 6:38 6:45
Anton Tohill 6:37 6:47
Jeremy Howe 6:36 6:48
Trent Bianco 6:47 6:48
Travis Varcoe 7:03 6:49 6:59
Chris Mayne 6:50 6:51
Jack Madgen 6:52 6:36
Tyler Brown 6:56 7:16
Oh, I missed Mayne the first time around.

I really enjoy your obsession with Chris..........that's all Maggie5.

That's surprising given the quality of his field kicking. Is it a technique issue?
Seems to be a mix of technique and mindset. I think Murphy can get better as they were pretty scrubby off the boot.

I modded at Nicks, very a very short time, when Mike decided to step away.
I was the lone voice when one poster put himself up to mod. He was a monster in sheep’s clothing, I knew as I was told by a couple of young posters about his methods. This person went on to be the alpha at Nicks. I went on to be perma banned.
I regret nothing because I know this person to be evil incarnate.

Good to see some improvements. Crazy to think we recently saw someone run 42 kilometres at about 2:50 per kilometre. That means their 2 km time would have been 5:40 and they then maintained that pace for a further 40km!! A testament to human endurance.

It's bloody astonishing how fast the elite marathon runners run.

Don’t tell anyone, there’d even beat our boys in their last 2km of the 42km marathon against ours running fresh the 2km.

shhhhhhh, our secret

Would that include everyone in the AFL?
technically on average they are going a bit above 6km on km.
but usually they put the put down the pedal so would go nicely above this in the 5.5 minutes range or so.
blicavs could match I suppose.

the 10,000 m world record has each 2km spread in the 5.2 minute or 5.12 or so; so really our boys go well but it’s a different level the best runners.

its how they can go km on km and keep going at such tempo.

A friend of mine is a pretty decent club runner. He guffaws and rolls his eyes whenever footy players are described as elite athletes.

If you have elite kicking, vision, handballing, game reading or decision making etc, does that make you an elite athlete?

It depends how you define athlete and also how you define elite. On the elite front, I do think we have a much lower bar for AFL than we do for other sports. Eg. there's about 5 Aussie cricketers who would be considered elite, but about 50 footballers.

A very overused word I reckon, one of my pet hates... elite. Not even sure what it means... I assume it is comparative, so the larger a given population the larger the number of 'elite' members ?

I’d be interested to see how your club runner mate held up running around getting smashed in an AFL standard intensity footy game. He might be able to run around a track quicker than them but it doesn’t necessarily make him a better athlete.
