I didn't realise this is a rolling thread.

Back in.
We'll probably roll it over to a 2020 edition when people are finished debriefing from last week.

We also can't trade our first rounder in 2020 unless we trade in another one at the same time. The 2 first rounders in 4 years rule is in effect.

Is that confirmed? I thought that this was specifically to do with being able to trade future picks.

Ie. During next trade period we wouldn't be able to trade a future 1st round pick (2021 1st) without bringing in another one but could trade our 2020 selections?

With the caveat of the AFL also being able to sign off on whatever they like at the time if the club can convince them.

You have to scroll right to the bottom of the article to find it (after the draft order has been fully enumerated), but it is there.
YOUR CLUB'S FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICKS
This was the inaugural draft where a new AFL rule – announced back in 2015 – impacted upon clubs' involvement.

Each team must pick at least twice in the first round in a rolling four-year period preceding the upcoming draft, so for the 2019 edition it included what happened between 2015 and '18.

Geelong was the only side that had to make at least one first-round selection this year, while Hawthorn and Essendon are in the same position for 2020.

That means they will be restricted in what they can do at the trade table and would only be able to trade a first-round selection if they have acquired another one.

Melbourne traded in an extra first-round pick and selected twice in that bracket this week – after last doing so in 2015 – to avoid joining the Hawks and Bombers in that scenario.

for the slackers not bothering going into the article, our current picks for 2020 look like;

1st round
3rd round (Gold Coast's, Essendon's went to Hawthorn)
4th round (+ Geelong's + West Coast's)
5th round

So no second rounder, one 3rd rounder, 3 fourth rounders and 1 in the fifth round unlikely to be used.

Am I reading that right Lore?

Based on these, it'd give us picks 12, 38, 66, 68, 71, 84

Depending on how they perform next year I imagine we will be using all of those later pick on matching for Brand and any other NGA/FS kids (Rioli and Max Fletcher)?

You would think so (picks for points). Potentially have Cody Brand and Josh Eyre as NGA picks and Fletcher as you suggested a possible father/son.

My post that Phoenix Bones was quoting was the one where I posted the 2020 draft order, it’s back 1 page in this thread:
Verified 2020 draft order for those curious. Won't change anymore now until the 2020 trade period. Some clubs clearly stockpiling. We've swapped our second and third rounders for Gold Coast's third rounder and a couple of extra fourth rounders so far.

We also can't trade our first rounder in 2020 unless we trade in another one at the same time. The 2 first rounders in 4 years rule is in effect.

So why do we need a new thread for next year? Why not have the same one until it reaches 10k, similar to what we do with the Trade/FA?
The list management ones get rolled over annually, admin likes a new thread before the trade/draft period starts so that people who drop in casually don't get lost in content that's years old, and so we don't end up rolling it over in the middle of trade week and breaking stuff. Also means the OPs can have the relevant resources, key dates, picks, etc.

The trade thread conveniently hits 10k posts around August each year anyway, which is usually when people give up on the season and start looking at trade stuff. The draft thread makes more sense to roll it over once we start talking about 2020, which tends to be as soon as the last draft is over since most of that discussion spins off into the new player threads.

Mega-threads are more suited to topics that aren't on an annual cycle, like player watch, non-Essendon, delusionals, etc.

Yeah, fair enough.

Fair enough, though one is labelled 'Draft Watch - onto 2020' and the other 'Draft Watch 2020'

It is slightly confusing

Don't dignify that with an answer.
