At this stage this would be my best 22 and this would be for rd1 with a few caveats, pre season form and injuries and in Wards case rehab and if he is ready to come back in and he would need at least 1 pre season game imo

Shaw Davis Haynes
Williams Corr Taylor
Whitfield Ward Kelly
Greene Cameron Taranto
Daniels HH TOJ
Jacobs Coniglio Hopper
MDB Kennedy Perryman Caldwell

Last spot is a toss up between several players but they need to have some speed and the others I considered were Hill and Cumming

This would leave the NEAFL team something like this with Flynn out till the 2nd half of the year and hopefully they can keep 15 listed players on the field for the season

Buntine Stein Idun
Ash Keefe Cumming
Buckley Shipley Sheridan
Langdon Sproule Lloyd
Hill Riccardi Hutchesson
Mumford Hately O'Halloran
Green Brown Briggs Reid

That is easily the best NEAFL team we have had.

fridgeman Taranto is twice and you've missed de Boer & Reid.

I think Ash will likely start the year in the backline, or be there very quickly, provided he shows something in preseason. Arguably not best 22 now, but we want to fast track his development.

Green I agree needs to develop in NEAFL.

Caldwell, Hately, O'Halloran & Hill should be pushing really hard.

Fixed up and plenty of options for the coaches and it will be interesting to see the make up of veterans v youth early on in the season

Not sure who I am expecting big things from next season as my prediction for this year was for Sproule and Flynn to each play 5-10 games each but that didnt work out with injuries effecting both but at least Sproule got a debut
The big thing is for the guys to stay injury free and that will go along way towards a very successful year

I think I could reliably pick a best 25 for round 1, and that's about it.

Cool spot to be in

I'm not sure if this will be best 22 in 2020, but it's what I'd like to see as the best 22 by season's end - without injuries & with appropriate player development - as I think it would give GWS the best balanced team from our list (presuming player potential is developed as expected for some younger kids):

Corr Davis Haynes
Williams Taylor Ash
Whitfield Ward Taranto
Greene Cameron Kelly
Daniels Himmelberg Finlayson
Jacobs Hopper Coniglio
O'Halloran Caldwell de Boer Hill

NEAFL:

Buntine Stein Idun
Shaw Keeffe Cumming
Kennedy Green Sheridan
Langdon Sproule Lloyd
Riccardi Hutchesson Briggs
Mumford Perryman Hately
Reid Shipley Buckley Brown

Flynn (inj)

It's probably unlikely that Leon drops Shaw, but ... his days in the best 22 are surely numbered if we are to improve.
The backline seems to function best with the 4 talls (hence Corr included) - and TBH Davis, Corr, Taylor & Haynes are all speedy or agile.
I see Hately, Perryman & Langdon putting heavy pressure on for best 22, and any injury or slip up & they're in there.
Green could be there too putting pressure on as a contested mid if he gets his tank sorted early.
I can see Briggs getting a run in some games as second ruck (e.g. vs Collingwood), and if Finlayson drops his head, I could see Briggs getting more opportunities, or Riccardi - if he develops well - getting a chance.
O'Halloran with his mix of burst speed & endurance, along with his ball winning skills, could become a critical utility for us (bit like Tommo's role without the height, but better!).
No offence, but hope that Reid & Lloyd drop back to being depth players as the youngsters transcend them.

I think the squad is in an excellent position, hoping that the kids continue to develop and push for first grade spots.

Agree with just about all of this. Corr needs to improve this year, we’ve been extremely patient with him through injury after injury and I thought he was pretty average this year. Defenders take longer and he’s had no continuity but it’s make or break for him now.

I doubt Shaw is going around again to play NEAFL. As much as I want ash in the team I don’t think it will be for Shaw who’s 1:1 defending is still great.
Maybe one of the talls (corr) might move out

When Shaw came back at the start of the year I thought he had lost a yard of pace and looked possibly cooked, but he rallied and by the end of the year he was holding his own.

My only criticism about him is that he is still prone to clangers. He should be banned from kick ins and just needs to take a bit more care but I guess that’s just him.

His positional play is still great and he is like Hodge an on field coach.

Yeah agreed

corr took a number of kick ins in his place when he came back from injury so maybe the club sees it that way too

Shaw and Perryman were the guys I pondered most about.

As I said, it's more an end-of-season best 22, and probably even a 2021 post-Heater line-up because I agree that he's not going to play NEAFL, and as we saw with Stevie J Leon is reluctant to drop his esteemed verterans. But I do expect Ash to play a lot of the year - he needs to learn from Heater, not by being in the NEAFL. He should be slowly given opportunities to take kick ins - he can burst away from the box or go long with his kicks.

Perryman I love for his skills, but his speed is an issue for me. It's essentially Perryman vs Caldwell, O'Halloran or de Boer in my thinking (without any injuries). The first two I want playing because they've got speed or dash, and de Boer's still got game class.

I think most posters agree the team needs an injection of speed and players that have that will be favoured at selection but I think the coaches will favour experience and game smarts and it would be exciting to see some of the NEAFL games early on in the season with Ash, Idun and Brown as the rebounding defenders
Although not express in speed both Haynes and Corr are good speed wise for talls but Corr lacks some game smarts and I think if he hadn't missed as much football as he has he would be rated higher and I think it is down to him being able to trust his body and hopefully season 2020 is the year it comes together for him
