Good move by Jamie to call directly. Never burn bridges! (unless you're in demolition and it's your job to burn bridges.....or you're in the armed forces in a battle and you want to stop the enemy advancing.........or you're Clint Eastwood in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly......but I think you get my point :drunk:)

:fire:

Even if not caring about that bridge, it's just basic manners I would have thought. The only thing I found interesting about it was that Fagan thought it was worthy of mention, so it's obviously not common practice. It suggests to me that many AFL players are either too whoosy or too self important to give somebody news they don't want to hear.

Whoosy and self important or are they just getting their managers to do what they pay them to do and deal with contract negotiations, including accepting/declining offers? It’s a little bit harsh to be giving them labels over something so trivial.

I agree, think he showed some good old fashioned manners.

You have to wonder how much the current laissez faire approach encourages the blase attitude some players seem to bring to potential transfers, and if they were forced to take greater personal responsibility maybe that might change.

Personally, I like that Elliott took on board that responsibility and made the call himself. Shows respect and consideration.

My language was definitely over the top, but at the same time I'd consider it poor form to not do it personally. Once negotiations get to the stage of a personal interview, like Elliott had when he was flown to tour the facilities, surely you'd tell them yourself? If I interviewed with someone and then they got their secretary to send me a "services not wanted" email, I'd consider it to be rude. Player agents may negotiate the contracts, but surely the onus is on the decision maker to deliver the decision. I could be wrong, but I reckon they'd do it themselves when they're delivering good news.

I know a bit more about this phone call than most people but I won't say anything on this public forum.

Excellent work.

I have it on good authority that the leadership group have requested that Billy doesn't call Fagan anymore (unless it's for pizza delivery). There's more to it, but that's all I can disclose publicly.

I agree, but I can’t bring myself to criticise a player for getting their manager to do what they’re paid for either.

If only you knew the people that Billy has called, you wouldn’t know how anyone could defend his politeness.

Very good, I feel sorry for anyone who didn't catch that comment for what it was.

You’re right and I'm just being an old fogey, without actually being fogey age, but at the same time I do find it unfathomable that someone could be flown up for an interview, be wined and dined and made an attractive offer, but wouldn’t have the courtesy to personally say thanks but no thanks.

So when i heard Fagans comment suggesting Elliott's behaviour was exceptional, I was genuinely shocked.

I always find it odd that many assume that noone who posts on Bigfooty has any inside information. There's 500 AFL footballers living in Melbourne plus a heap of other people working at clubs. All of these people have multiple connections outside of the club. There's literally tens of thousands of people who from time to time have information about AFL players and clubs which hasn't made it to the media.

I don’t assume no one has inside info. Hell, old mate in the Beams thread could have the best source in the world, but if he makes a statement and declares it as inside news, without giving reason or context because of his ‘source’, and he’s using a secondary account, it’s going to be treated with the same dose of healthy skepticism that most posts that are full of BS on this site do. As for CFC2010 i know he has some reasonable sources, so if he decides to PM me some news I’ll take it on board because he actually has reasonable credibility.
