What would it take for you to stop watching AFL?

watched roos vs swans granny from 96 and Swans vs dons draw that same year in the last few days and it was marvellous. nothing like todays style of play. It brought back what football used to be, very enjoyable and actual football. Todays game resembles rugby and is putrid. Richmond were the joker in the pack that actually play a great style like the Eagles of 2018, Hawks of 2008-2015 bar that one year etc.

Garbage. I'm not going to watch one minute of it. Until the season begins and I won't miss a single second. It will be succulent. Like a meal. A succulent chinese meal.

I think it may require a new league to rival the AFL for me to stop watching completely.

Tbh outside of the occasional big game between contenders (preferably on at night) I only really watch my own teams games and finals now after the first few rounds.

edit - If Essendon folded I’d be done for sure. Would probably only follow local footy if that happened.

If it starts becoming too much like soccer which is a really s**t sport.

Not only is this comment generally the most ignorant comment on BF, it's wrong on so many levels.

Compare the AFL to the EPL for instance.

One has an uneven draw, the other has all teams playing each other twice, home and away.

One has a wildcard system at the end to decide the champion, where an injury or one bad game could cost the top team the trophy. The other awards the trophy to the best team over 38 rounds.

One rewards teams for finishing bottom, you'd know all about that. The other relegates you for finishing in the bottom 3.

One sees the better teams picking up easy wins against the bottom teams because the bottom teams start playing for earlier draft picks, the other sees the bottom teams often presenting the biggest challenge to the other teams because the bottom teams are fighting for survival.

One is a closed shop, every so often looking to admit plastic clubs into its league. The other allows promotion so if you are good enough, you will be promoted. Thus, one is a closed shop, the other is an open shop.

One is a socialist system that looks to put a restriction on spendinqg, the other doesn't.

One plays to half empty stadiums every week. The other is a full house every week.

One reaches a market of 3 million people, the other reaches a market of 3 billion people.

Don't worry, the CONTRIVED AFL competition will never reach the dizzy heights of the Premier League.

Maybe if you were emotionally invested in a football team the same way you were invested in your AFL team, you'd understand the pressure of your team having to grind out a win week in week simply due to the fact there are no finals to fall back on, and thus, the tactics that go with it.

Sucks to be you.

One is financed by organised crime. AFL isn’t.

One is so mindlessly moronic that even you can understand it, AFL isn’t.
One is called the most skilful code by many of those mindless morons, when truth is the sport is the most basic there is, such that even a two year old can kick and dribble. The other has skills that we sadly underestimate. Bouncing while sprinting, high marks, tackling, handballing, kicking a 60m punt.

One leads to brain damage in our kids, because the sport encourages contact of the head to the ball. Footy doesn’t.

One has full stadiums of 15,000. Only 8 stadia in the Uk have a capacity of over 50,000. The other has massive attendances and club memberships considering the population.

One is called soccer, not football. You could call it unAustralian football, I guess.

Sucks to be you.

I watch my team and maybe a few neutral finals now, the game is a trash spectacle 90% of the time.

If WC folded tomorrow I don't think I'd watch another game of AFL.

Been drifting away for a few years now.

I still love Richmond, and probably always will, but really couldn't care about 'The AFL' and its focus on PR and the corporate aspects of the game all that much.

Call me a bandwaggoner if you will, but my team going through a golden patch is probably the only thing that has kept me around. When the cycle turns and we go back into the pack, I doubt I'll follow things to any serious degree.

Bandwaggoner. 🙃

i am thoroughly enjoying out struggles as i know when it turns it will be sweet

In reality it would be a job overseas where game access and broadband availability (as opposed to speeds) is virtually non-existent, or if Telstra suddenly charged data costs for streaming games against those connected to their mobile network (if there is a change in streaming providers to say Optus there's a good chance I'll switch providers, currently because I'm a Telstra customer I can stream games/radio broadcasts on my phone without data costs).

Only one of them can keep you awake for the duration of the game too. Hint - the one without 0-0 draws.

Have already stopped watching a lot of games these days.
It's a very weak and bland sport at the moment. Only a couple of players keep it entertaining. Complete shell of what the game was in the late 90's.
The skill level and tactics used in the 90's were s**t in comparison to what we see today.

The late 90's were an outlier in Aussie rules history with several ATG forwards all playing at the same time; Ablett, Lockett, Dunstall, and to a lesser degree Modra. That's an aberration, not the norm, and people forget that.

What sports do you prefer today?

I'd stop supporting Essendon if we merged with one of the scummier Melbourne clubs, but I can't think of anything that would stop me from watching AFL.

But there aren't any Melbourne clubs scummier than Essendon?

I find when Im not in Adelaide I seldom watch too much footy because there is other things to do.

So for me moving to a happening city, doubt I would watch as much.

I'm down to watching about 75% of Eagles games and that's about it. May watch 1 or 2 other games a year. Dont watch any footy shows.

I'm pretty keen to see the Blues win a flag, so I might be around for a while yet. The only thing that ever had me turn from the game was the AFL's career-ending suspension of Greg Williams for shoving the ump. I stopped going to the footy for years after that. Carlton's plight with the salary cap scandal brought me back into the fold, but I never went back to the same level of viewership as before.

Right with you on this, token interest these days as AFL is a sport that is not comparable to the sport called Aussie Rules I grew up playing and watching.
The entire league is so sanitised and without life.
Friday night footy once a highlight has now become a Victorian snore fes, only really watch the Eagles now. Have handed in my membership as it is really is more a sponsorship than a membership. Much prefer to give my money to my WAFL club that needs it.
Totally over the rule changes and the absolute stupidity of clubs choosing 18 year old kids over good footballers. It’s like one big kindergarten league.
I could go on and on, a sport I once lived and breathed lost me many years ago in regards to caring anymore. Clearly many do care though but I find they care about their clubs first and the sport itself second which in my eyes is back to front.
Anyway it is what it is now, I will keep watching the Eagles but as the sport has changed so much there is nothing I can do about that.
