Any reports on Hall or Hosie?

Good to hear maj is flying, I’m so excited to have him back in the side. It’s going to be an incredible story when he lifts the cup at the end of the year with the norm smith wrapped around his neck

Hall broke a few lines. Played a mix of midfield and flank.

Hosie intrigues me. Runs hard. Leads hard. Tries to make amends if he *s up.

At one stage he kicked the ball into the man on the mark near forward 50 which turned the ball over. The blue team moved the ball down the field and it was Hosie who forced the ball over the boundary with a spoil 80m away.

That play was super impressive. He showed a lot of heart to fix his mistake by chasing down and forcing Bonar into holding him back from the ball after making him spill a fairly simple mark.

Apologies if it’s been covered, but how did McKay go? I know he got moved forward late. Where did he look most comfortable?
I thought he competed well in the first half as a kpd.

He was moved into the ruck in the second half and had little influence.

BMac needs to keep working although he won't be in calculation for a senior birth for a while yet.

Caught the first half.

Much quieter games from Bonar, Hall and Comben compared to previous ones.

Xerri played a very similar game to last weeks, thought he broke even in the ruck, Goldy got some fairly meaningless posies in and around the contest, Xerri dominated him in the air.

Cunners is Cunners.

Ahern got a lot of the ball, a lot of hack kicks.

Thought McDonald was particularly good. Scott as everywhere early and just breaks lines, sticks out like dogs balls in our side.

Thomas flashed in and out but was great in periods.

Good to hear Zurhaar was better in the second half, as he’s had about 5 kicks combined for the 10 qtrs I’ve watched so far. Someone described him as playing like a millionaire, not a bad anology. Wood has to get some credit, he’s kept him virtually possessionless in most of the match sim this month. Concerned.

The only bloke near Cunners from a preseason performance standpoint has been Majak in the last 3 games. He performed today like he did the last 2 games. So far above the next defender it’s not funny. Primed for a huge year.

Simpkin is ‘just’ going from what I’ve seen. I don’t want to say it’s Groundhog Day yet, but I’m getting similar vibes to a lot of the puff peices articles about him. Without the talk meeting the performances. His performances in the preseason games are going to be really interesting.

Anderson has been exceptional in all the games so far. Just about the best mid behind Cunnington and Higgins.

Hosie should be nicknamed ‘Rudy’. The guy is absolute maximum effort and an absolute heart and soul, glue guy type.

Larkey will kick 40+ this year, he was still challenging Majak and Majak was in beast mode today.

Not much of a poster (just lurker) - but here are my thoughts from the day, make of them what you will.

Overall - hard to judge the game plan, but as mentioned there is far less long kicks down the line, and more trying to keep possession with short passes.

Given that it seemed to be a probable versus possible game again, the score could have been worse - but the senior players in the probables (Higgins, Marley, Ahern) kept it competitive.

Majak was great athletically, and provided a great 1-1 contest against Larkey whenever he went near it. Not a great decision maker with the ball, but his other gifts make up for it.

Hosie - really competitive, great attitude, leads up well. Personal view is that he is still struggling a bit with the structure, but will improve when more comfortable with it.

JMac - as much as many on here seems to critics him, he read the play really well today, and got plenty of the ball, but what I noticed most was his voice, and how well he directed others.

TT - others have spoken of his skills, but I loved his competitiveness today, had a real hunger for the contest

Xerri- good competitor, moves ok around the ground, great hands, but awful kicking for goals! A chance if BB still out

Mason - pity he left the game, as his field kicking out of defence was incredible, and could be a real weapon. Didn’t really notice how he defended 1-1 though

Bonar was bigger than I thought - seems to be taller than Maj, almost as broad - except in the arms. Did ok today, but nothing outstanding

Pretty good assesment.

I'd play him at half back ahead of Ahern.

Still going....

Hall had some great tackles - on the stopped Zurhaar was great, and his pace was great at times, just be nice to see him get it a bit more

Dyson was a bit the same, did some good things, will be great depth

The small forward battle will continue. I felt that Turner perhaps was more active (hard to miss with his new haircut), but Mahoney is someone I would rather be leading to as a forward. If he could find it more, he will push out Turner (who played some time back in the second half).

Same goes for the third tall spot - Walker may be in front of Durdin and McKay, but his disposal and decision making (possibly getting used to new game plan) could be improved.

Overall - was surprised by the intensity, some of the VFL hopefuls would have been shocked how hard they were hit at an intra club ! And Tippa will be a cult figure in the VFL!

that’s the sort of work ethic that’ll make him earn that half forward spot and make it his own over someone like Wood (who’s intensity was always inconsistent)

Only going off reports but It seems as though Simpkin’s output has been a bit underwhelming so far this pre-season.

There's some reasonable knocks on Wood at various times, but his work ethic has not, and will never be, one of them.

What does your backline look like at the moment?

What does StKilda's forward line look like?

At a hunch, I'd be going

B: Williams, Tarrant, Daw
HB: Pittard, Walker, McDonald.

........in the knowledge that midfield run will be pushing back to assist.

I still don't really have a strong feel for this new set up yet.

Jy has been pretty good. Spent a good part of the first half on a wing. Got more of it when moved into the middle. Not as prominent as last week. Nailed a really nice set shot from the flank in the last quarter (I think)

That would leave Macmillan or Atley as the extra defender off the bench. Both could play if we went smaller in defence and left Walker out.

Atley could play loose down back, on a wing or in the rotations. We can't afford to leave out his pace. Jamie is an interesting question.

Again, will the Saints go with 3 talls?

At this stage, you’d think St Kilda go in with King, Ryder and Membrey up forward.

Okay, so do we run Jasper with someone like Membrey, in order to allow for another running player?

I'm not sure mate. This new set up still has me guessing somewhat.

I was there today and that has to be the hottest day I’ve ever experienced. Anyone who thinks global warming is a myth, just needed to stand on the wing with me today and they’d soon get it.
I actually stood near the BBQ to cool off.
Great concept by NMFC - free entry was a nice little bonus too.
I dare say, that was one of the best intra-club matches I’ve been to.
Jed was BOG for me.

Both Hall and Hosie looked impressive at different stages.

For Hall, it is a game of confidence. He has all the tools and when he gets on his bike he looks very dangerous. On that showing, he would certainly be in the mix.

I like the look of Hosie. Not only does he give 100% but he seems to will himself into the play. I could see him doing well at AFL level. Leads well. Tackles hard. Gets to good spots. Second and third efforts. Good hands. Might be a question mark over his kicking but nothing major. Time will tell.
