Weitering ‘overstretched’ in a contest and was pulled out as a precaution. Doesn’t sound too significant, but the vagueness has me a tad anxious.

Also disappointing not seeing SPS and Martin once again. Hoping it’s just load management.

I know this is what the club said but surely they cant be serious, there must be a few niggles there. It was an 8 qtr match ffs, they could play 1 or 2 quarters if they need to manage their loads (in February......)

One word I didn't mention and should have about yesterday is 'instinctive'

The guys played the game without handcuffs on and a lot of what they did came about naturally and without procrastination.
Of course there were turn-overs that resulted at times and even though this was only a practice match, the message that has been highlighted throughout the pre-season stood out. Players have been encouraged to back their skills and why not, when they have them.

The first squad that took the ground will largely what we put onto the park come round 1.
Given just how well Casboult is performing, the club may be comfortable not pushing McKay along.
There still some talent to bring back into the squad and even without McKay and CCurnow and one could safely say that Kreuzer, SPS, Fisher, Martin, Marchbank and McGovern are more likely starters, than not.

One concern/frustration from yesterday was our tendency to bomb the ball inside 50 no matter who was positioned there. We got away with it with Collingwood missing Howe, Crisp and Roughead, but this needs to be fixed ASAP. It’s obviously a different story if Curnow, McG and Mckay are all playing, but our reality ATM is not this.

arrowbro.............he was very, very awful for years...........
The club should have got help for his kicking a lot earlier. Also, during Levi’s years we weren’t very good as a team and that sometimes exposed Levi’s weaknesses more being a confidence player. He won’t turn a match on his own but if the team is up and about he can be unstoppable.

I feel like TDK entered the game during either the second or third stanza? Likely the 2nd, particularly since Weitering went down and we needed a second ruckman.

LOB, Dow and Cunners may have entered as a trio in the 3rd or 4th phase.

Not entirely certain, but these 4 were definitely among the first guys rotated in.
Pretty sure it was TDK, LOB and Polson on field from the start of the 3rd then Dow and cunners later in the 3rd off the bench.

Those guys have far better/more predictable leading patterns than someone like Kennedy, hence some of the bombs coming in.

Our ball use will look better going into 50 when we’ve got some more obvious targets.

Good win guys, practise match or not always good to win the old rivals.
Will be interesting to see how you guys go this year, Correct me if i am wrong your rebuild has reached the stage were you would want to make the 8, and play one finals game at a minimum?
Would be great to see a top 8 consisting of all the old arch rivals
I think this year we should be pushing for finals, but most are probably expecting us to fall just short. As long as we get games into the kids and see improvements across the board then we'll be pretty happy. Next year the year we are really looking to make an impact in finals.

Too early to make this call, particularly on Newman. Newnes was ok, Gibbo was good.

But there’s a few guys to challenge for spots over the next couple of weeks.

Do you think so?

What annoys me about Gibbons, as it did the same time last year, is that he doesn't seem to want to take the first and often, best option.
It's as though he's trying to manufacture something special when there was absolutely no reason to.
Maybe it's just a pre-season thing and he fits back into the scheme of things via the season proper.

Newnes is a likely starter and ahead of guys that may otherwise occupy a spot around the flanks.
His experience did show up yesterday as his running patterns were good as was his awareness of when to fall back to support the back-line.
Reckon all that will get him over the line ahead of others, but again; There's little I've seen this pre-season that makes him a stand-out. that's maybe because he just isn't. Just a soldier and sometimes tht's perfectly fine ttoo.

If it does come down to Williamson vs Newman..?
Williamson seems like the obvious way to go, but given 20+ games last year vs 0 games? Interesting in how the coaches see things.

FWIW the Carlton website has the best as
Casboult, Newnes, Docherty, Williamson, J.Silvagni, Betts, Philp

In my best 22 I didn't have Casboult (assuming C Curnow and McKay are fit), Newnes, Williamson or Philp and Jack was just on the cusp - going to be some interesting decisions at match committee. Great to have some serious competition for spots.

Love hearing reports on how well Setterfield is going.

Maybe we will win that 2018 trade period versus Essendon (Shiel v Setters) ?

Always thought we did, based off the relative prices we paid and the huge wraps on setterfield in his draft year.

Shiel should be better than last year but I think will will go past him in the second half of the year.

where there's a will there's a way and I think will will.......

A year too early IMO

2020 - finals possible, but more a dream than reality
2021 - expect to make finals
2022+ - expect to do some damage in finals

I wouldn't trade Setterfield for Shiel straight up
