I think he may have saved himself with a good year this year.O'Bree would have to be close if he had a bad year,
i don't know why you guys are so critical on Davies. Im a big fan.
I recon Davis & Richards are lucky to still be around
Of our players who have been around a while, its pleasing that we have very few duds left. Those that go at the end of the year will be unlucky, unlike this year where for most of them, their time was up.
Guy Richards and Ben Davies are two on their last chances, especially Davies.
Other senior players who may come under the microscope are Leon Davis, Ryan Lonie and Tarkyn Lockyer. All may be trade bait at the end of the year.
Of the second year players, Cook and Stanley may have to show a bit more.
Davies, kid shows promise but lacks flair. I'm hopeful but its crunch time.
Richards, mister unreliable. Injuries have been cruel, short lists mean clubs can ill afford to be too patient.
Rhyce Shaw, tough call but after knee op recovery and an indifferent season Rhyce has to come back hard this year.
Stanley, another tough call but the kid needs to break through this year and show us something whereas Cook who is a year younger will have to show improvement but the club will be more patient with him one feels.
Lockyer, Lonie seem perennial favourites of the coach and favourite targets of the fans. Neither have lived up to potential, both have obvious faults but both do a job most weeks and will be relatively safe if they play at least as well as they did last season (same with O'Bree, who actually had a good season 2006).
Wakes and Burns, either way you'd think its their last season but Wakes needs to find fitness and form early to avoid extended spells at Willy one feels, particularly if Anthony comes on as expected and Toovey continues to improve and starts to press for selection. Maxwell and O'Brien will also be pressing so it could be tougher for Wakes than many assume.
Ben Davies is a hard in and udner midfielder who i can see fillign a scotty burns role when burnsy retires. Ultimately, the club will be in a rebuilding phase over the next 3 years.
Likely retirements over two- 3 years:
- Nathan Buckley, Scott Burns, Anthony Rocca, James Clement, Paul licuria.
Thats pretty much our core senior players gone in by 2008/9. Therefore, we need the Lonie's, the Davie's to show something. Ryan's year this year was an improvement, with his first half of the year outstanding. (Check out his stats for Rounds 1-6 especially, was terrific to watch.)
The guys we desperately need to get rid of are Shane O'Bree and these types- guys who will never ever win us a flag. Shane is at best a solid wingman with poor decision making and foot skills. When he gets tagged he may aswell go to Bali because you don't see him anyway.
Therefore, i think our line-up, building for the future, should look like this:
B: O'brien, Prestigiacomo, Maxwell
HB: Lonie, Clement, H.Shaw
C: Davies, Didak (when Fit), R. Shaw
HF: Thomas, Cloke, Egan
FF: Medhurst, Buckley, Rusling
Rucks: Fraser, Holland, Johnson
Int: Stanley, Rocca, Burns, Richards, licuria, lockyer, Anthony.
It's pretty tough to do- Anthony Rocca, Licca and tarks ont he bench. however this is the future of our club and id rather give some kids experience now that get to 2008 and have about 4 major retirements, leaving us flat on our feet.
Ryan Cook is 2 days older than Danny Stanley.Stanley, another tough call but the kid needs to break through this year and show us something whereas Cook who is a year younger will have to show improvement but the club will be more patient with him one feels.
lonie shouldnt be trade bait, or even be in this topic, he is a great player
Agreed bar the last part.
Hardly a great player, but a fixture in our line up nonetheless.
A bloke who for some reason has the support of the majority and deserves to be continually added to this thread is shane obree- decision making, and foot skills deplorable, combine that with an inability to cope with taggers.
That sounds like the defintion of trade bait to me. Good enough to be valuable in a trade but not esssential to our future.
