Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

It's interesting with where Reid sits in our age cohorts imo. Really is by himself. McCartin and Blakey to come Buddy a few years ahead.

He is only very occasionally dominant, so when Buddy is gone or fading and the next bunch yet to be enough it's going to be interesting to see if he can be the major forward contributor we will need him to be. I think it's pretty fair to have doubts on that, but he does have some strengths and is able to play his role. Probably the only thing tempering my very bullish 2-5 year outlook.

Reid's career is so odd. Not counting 2010 (his debut year in which he played one game), his season tally of games looks like this:

2011 - 23
2012 - 22
2013 - 10
2014 - 20
2015 - 22
2016 - 0
2017 - 22
2018 - 1
2019 - 22

He basically either plays a full year or hardly at all. Very strange pattern.

I've added his goal tallies for each year, to add fuel to the fire, i mean add to the discussion
2011 - 23 Games / 22 Goals
2012 - 22 Games / 31 Goals
2013 - 10 Games / 7 Goals
2014 - 20 Games / 17 Goals
2015 - 22 Games / 16 Goals
2016 - 0 Games / 0 Goals
2017 - 22 Games / 16 Goals
2018 - 1 Games / 2 Goals
2019 - 22 Games / 28 Goals

So statistically speaking, 2018 was his most effective year as a forward :drunk:

All I can see from this is if we can get Reid to kick 30+ in a year we win the flag

Easy

Goals 2010-2020

Stephen Milne (retired 2013) - 197
James Podsiadly (retired 2014) - 195
Jonathon Brown (retired 2014) - 171
Sam Reid (occasionally still playing) - 154
Barry Hall (retired 2011) - 135

I see that if he doesn't play at all we make a grand final

The pain of losing a prelim in 13 was nothing compared to losing 14 and 16.

If we make it to a GF I want to win it. Rather not make it than lose it

Bloody hell I forgot how good Barry was in his last year

Rather lose a prelim than lose another GF thank you very much

I never thought I'd say it but I agree. I was heartbroken in '13 but it was nothing compared to '14 and particularly '16, the word devastated doesn't do it justice.

I wasn't even devastated. 2014 I was just utterly flat, though knowing the year was over by early in the second quarter kinda prepared me for it.

2016 I was just enraged. Both at the repeat offenders who didn't stand up for us, and at the sport we all love for failing us.

As long as it is a very low salary, he's good enough to be best 22 when fit, BUT we cant throw good money after him anymore. Our Sydney market will need a big name recruit for marketing purposes. I imagine Sinclair is now gettable to move on, Reid should be also. Really interested to see if there are new list and trade rules at years end.

I totally echo these sentiments. I remember going into the 2014 GF and thinking it had an 06 cockiness feel about it.

We can only really judge on recent output and Reid's 2019 was a pretty solid year. He contributed more than just his 28 goals and a Marn Grook BOG against the Pies. He was 8th in the AFL for i50 tackles while still spending a fair bit of time in ruck and defence. He also provided a strong marking target across half-back, having been in the top 10 of contested marks in the AFL in two years. He's had his share of injuries in the past, missing 2.5 of 9 seasons but he played almost every game in 6 of those 9 seasons.

To recent form and in 2019 Sam Reid placed top 10 in almost every team stat including Goals (2nd), marks, tackles, tackles i50 (1st), hitouts (2nd), contested possies, Contested marks (1st), marks i50 (1st), Centre clerances, one percenters, score involvements, TOG, goal assists, frees for, supercoach and dreamteam. He has few clangers and gives away few frees. 2019 stats suggest that Reid isn't just in our best 22 but very much in our top 10 overall.

We tend to forget that Reid was the same age as Tom McCartin is now (20) when coming off a 23 game/22 goals 2011 season as a 19 year old he kicked 31 goals in our Premiership year. At the same age Reid was already well ahead of McCartin in his development and was expected to become a dominant forward of the competition.

Reid's rapid development was cruelly interrupted after being rushed back too early in 2013. He returned in 2014 but in the role of swingman and 4th tall behind Buddy, Tippet & Goodes. In 2015 we had Buddy, Tippet, Heeney and Goodes forward with Reid again in a swing role. In 2016 Reid was injured but returned in 2017 claiming the 2nd highest goal tally behind Buddy, but ahead of Heeney, Rohan, Hayward and the emerging Papley. In 2018 injury struck for the third time but he returned for a full season in 2019 and after brushing out the cobwebs was again our 2nd highest goal scorer despite an expanded playing role.

There's little doubt that Reid has genuine talent. His best is very good indeed and at 28 he should be reaching his peak. His 2019 stats suggest he could give even more with a consistent period settled mainly inside 50. At the very least Reid provides a strong contested marking target and a versatile tall while we transition from the Buddy era to our next period of dominance.
