There. Someone had to say it.

It is time we stop fooling ourselves into thinking we can be friends with China under the rule of the CCP. They are petty and fickle bullies. We need to start making other arrangements for trade. Less China and more everyone else. * 'em- they're campaigners.

It will.hurt but we chase other markets like growing India, Africa and Vietnam. We can't just keep giving into a lying bully who is just getting worse and worse especially to their smaller neighbours.

IMO long term we win.

The question is, will people be able to take the short term pain, of which there will be plenty?

If Coronavirus lockdowns are any indication, people will get jack of it and want to go back to business as usual in 5 minutes because the pain is too much.

lol.

Straya has been involved in 10 separate wars since WWII with our friends the USA. But "They are petty and fickle bullies"

For the record neo-liberalism created this monster. Again, thanks to our good friends the USA

This is where you need strong politicians, with effective policy, strategic vision.... everything both major parties don't seem to have. Our reliance on them is absurd (not even being anti-china, to be so balls deep to one country is absurd), its breaking the addiction which is going to be even harder.

Both China and the US are campaigners in their own way, in Australia's interest though, we need a politician savvy and pragmatic enough to be able to maintain relations with both in just the right amount, without committing to one irrationally and burning the bridges on the other

Unfortunately we don't have anyone like that

We are a regional country, we are resigned to be reliant on both US and China to thrive, so we need to play the game smart

There goes our top 3 earners. Mining, education, tourism.

Well now is the time to diversify our export markets & goods. Also at the very least we need to redevelop a basic capacity to be able to sustain out strategic needs. ie petroleum needs for military & basic transport needs (food etc), medical supplies, military supplies, communication needs.

More jobs here doing things we use to do. High tech manufacture for a start. More trade with India, Vietnam, Indonesia etc.

The changes for Australia & the world are not all one way traffic. If their is less world trade with Chynah it'll put a huge stress on their economy & put real pressure on 'the party'.

The CCP fears their own people far more than the US or the rest of the world.

Right now they are lashing out in fear. Something that is not unusual for tyrannical dictatorships like in Chynah.

That's quite a bit of twisting history to suit an agenda going on here.

FTR I see a bit of a distancing between Australia and the US going on in future if US politics keeps heading down the same path. There will be a clear divergence starting to show.

This.

They persecute Uyghurs, Tibetans and religious people because of the fear that their differences in thought will damage the CCP.

They ban their own citizens from travelling to Taiwan in January when Taiwan had their elections because of fear some citizens might like some elements of democracy that would threaten the CCP power hold.

They interfere in overseas universities and their education and research out of fear that Chinese students abroad might develop views of the world that threaten the CCP power hold.

They meddle in other countries' governments to prevent any threats to their power hold (e.g. Gladys Liu).

You can argue that a major aim of the Belt and Road is to prevent any threats outside to their rule.

My real name is Gladys Lui and you are a lying campaigner.

I have reported you to our CCP hackers and you can expect to have really bad kiddie pr0n all over your PC and phone by the morning.

You are almost as bad as Taiwan.

The CCP lashing out shows the pressure their feeling.

The loopy conspiracy theories about how this virus started is one thing, but it willdo/has done a lot of damage to Chynah's economic position moving forward.

When their export jobs start to dry up, then we'll see the CCP fears of public disquiet against the CCP & the billionaires they've allowed to take so much of the value of their burgeoning economy to date.

We've a long way to go before this all plays out. Australia has been hit with a serious reality that one could argue should have seen coming & looked harder at diversification of our markets. Its a pity the Government listen far too much to the billionaire class who just dig up dirt & export it.

Lazy politicians have left us open to this situation.

Maybe the virus was created in a lab to destroy capitalism. And since it's hardly effective (like everything else made in China) they're resorting to crippling economies directly?

Morrison now needs to push them harder and see how far they'll go

Guess your not visiting China for 20 years.

I don't have any objection to cutting China loose, as I have stated elsewhere, my concern is that people don't realise just how much we rely on them.
It won't be possible to wind back your top 3 earners without massive pain.
As I have also stated elsewhere, given the whining about the lockdown and its affect on the economy, should we cut China loose, when s**t gets real, there will be massive/widespread economic pain in this country.
Should such a course of action be taken, we could conceivably see the collapse of mining, farming, real estate and tourism, at the same time. Nearly all universities will go broke.
It is fanciful to think that any govt would take such a course of action. It simply won't happen.
What then are the alternatives?

It's also important to point out that taking such a course of action based only on a reaction to China's involvement with the Coronavirus would be mind numbingly stupid.

Sounds good in theory, unfortunately the decoupling will be painful as we as a country have been very poor at developing trade with any other country. The lack of trade we have had with Indonesia despite how close they are has been a disgrace. Hopefully the FTA which will start in July will change that trend.

They should have diversified over 10 years ago... idiots the Australian government... this is what will make Rudd a big failure when we revise.

Its hardly 'cutting China loose'.

Its more a combination of market diversification & shoring up our vital Strategic needs & supply lines.

Some import replacement will be needed.

China will still want trade, so will we.

They still want our quality food, Iron ore, coal.

As said, China's regime is under a lot of pressure too right now. Probably more than we realise.
