Hubs and the re-start

No real point in delaying things anymore a player will eventually test positive to it either now or in 3 months.

No real point? As puke said in another thread, we have a very real shot at getting the total cases of this thing down to zero for the foreseeable future. Across the whole of Australia. That would be massive, and would effectively mean the entire country could become a giant quarantine hub, effectively negating any risks that would come with domestic travel.

But we're not there yet. Slacken off too early and you risk a second wave. That then puts all of society even further back.

That's just from a broader safety perspective. From an AFL point of view, if footy returns in it's expected format, that puts four teams at a massive disadvantage as our own coach has acknowledged this morning.

So yeah, I'd say there's a point in delaying things.

Doubtful we will get to zero cases as not all cases are picked up. The chief medical officer recently said in Australia we pick up 95% of cases. So there are probably 5% of cases that won‘t be identified. Hence the push for more testing to try and cover the gaps in the spread. Accordingly, COVID 19 will be in the community and random new cases appear. Delaying things may not address the unidentifed cases in the community.

NRL is fortunate that it could align the three states on the east coast and NZ.

AFL is paying the price for treating a number of states as secondary in a national competition.

You may be over-estimating the community transmission. Almost all of the COVID-19 cases recently have been from either overseas travellers or cruise ship passengers. Small clusters in Vic and Tas the exceptions, but they too can be reduced down to zero because of effective social distancing.

However the premature relaxation of the rules could lead to a sudden rise in community transmission. We really have to hope the government has got their timing right, otherwise whether an AFL season happens or not will become the least of our issues.

Its costing Australia 4 billion a week Sco mo has literally no choice but to relax restrictions, dont envy his job at the moment at all.

No one will be left with a home if we wait for eradication

Exactly, unemployment rate came out today adding pressure to ease the restrictions. Harsh as it sounds there are only 50 people currently in hospital in the country being treated for COVID 19. Twenty of those in ICU.

Not over stating just relying on what the Chief Medical Officer states.

The wait may not be as long as you think, but it's not eradication we should be after anyway. As the guy from WHO said, total eradication may not even be an option.

It's just biding time for it to be at a good level where society can return to normal. We only have 67 active cases in the whole country. We are a lot closer than you think to reaching a point where it would be safe to open society up again without the risk of a second wave.

It would be better to take that extra time, be overly-conservative, give ourselves a better chance at having a functioning society and economy and health system so that when the virus inevitably does come back in Australia in some form, it will be manageable, rather than a disastrous second wave.

Probably getting more toward the existing thread here

I would say it’s managed now to enough of a level to live around it But who knows

Interesting to see how much of the fixture the AFL release now

Pretty much this

would he give the vic clubs an exemption from 14 days isolation when they arrived?
Hell no, the mining FIFO guys (who actually contribute to the economy, unlike Jack Riewoldt) all do 14 days isolation

we have around slightly less than 600 active cases. this is being reduced each day.

....and return serve from the Victorian Sports Minister.

Yet they expected their state, with far more cases, to be a hub?

It doesn't make them soft that they didn't want to relocate elsewhere. It makes the AFL corrupt that they cherrypick whose complaints they listen to and prioritise.

And the result is always the same.

What have the cases been per percentage of the population?

It’s all annoying whoever has to travel , to be fair there are 10 vic clubs and 2 in WA so like it or not that’s a factor

But isn't that always the rationale used to justify inequality?

There are 100,000 people at the MCG and 60,000 at Optus Stadium, so the grand final stays in Melbourne.

Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn, Essendon etc have old long rivalries that the interstate clubs do not, so the primetime matches always go to the Victorian clubs.

At some point the AFL needs to grow a spine and start doing what's fair and right, not what's easy and will please the majority.

Not agreeing or disagreeing but Yeah pleasing the majority is usually the rationale for everything in life

They don’t have to do anything, if they please the majority and the comps a success that’s all the matters to them

Our club has to try to convert the apparent millions of supporters into something that makes us a powerhouse

It's usually the rationale for everything in life, if 'usually' means always with no exceptions in the case of the AFL.

Very difficult for a non-Victorian side to become a powerhouse IMO. Getting to play a grand final on our home deck with a blatant advantage over our opponents would be a start. As good as the Hawthorn and Richmond sides of the last decade have been, how many of their five combined flags do you think have been won on an even playing field? Zero.

Interstate clubs will inevitably go all the way and win sporadic flags, but powerhouse teams? Forget about it. AFL has basically made it impossible. Brisbane had to be the best team of all time to do it, and then were punished for that feat. Adelaide were a powerhouse. They had 80k or so members in 2017 and won the minor premiership. They were rewarded for being a powerhouse by playing the grand final on their opponents' home deck. West Coast are a powerhouse. Also around the 80k membership mark, and were rewarded for being a powerhouse by playing the grand final on their opponents' home deck.

So we shouldn't have to do anything. We've done our bit. As I said a while back we've contributed more to this competition in the last two decades than half the clubs in Victoria and what's our reward? Trade bans, losing COLA, anti-Swans bias in the media, away grand finals, rigged grand finals, no calendar event fixtures, and constant second preference to the Victorian clubs.

Now if you were one of those million+ Swans supporters, why the **** would you sign up to pay to fight a losing battle like that?

This is a broader issue than just these hubs that’s for sure

The problem is the comp and The way it’s set up is not even close to how a national comp would be set up from scratch

We are all bias towards our own clubs (everyone from us as fans to President) and it’s all about power, control and $ as you say

The afl control the purse strings and there’s basically what 2 clubs that stand on their own ? The afl bring in these equalisation measures (some have helped us, many haven’t)

The reality is unless they restructure the comp it will always be a bit stuffed

And we will always turn up and support it as we love the club

Agreed, and I realise I probably sound like the old man yells at cloud meme with my ranting. But I also believe that fundamental change won't ever happen unless the AFL is put under pressure to do so. One person on bigfooty won't do that but if enough people around the industry who mattered did so then who knows what could happen.
