The AFL has indicated that they will release the fixture in 4 week blocks so I've had a go at putting one together. I kept the QLD/WA/SA teams playing each other, it was pretty hard the AFL have got a lot to think about lol. Thoughts?

R2 prediction that I posted earlier, Seems they will want showdowns to restart
Freo v eagles
Suns v lions
Port v crows
Swans v giants
Pies v tigers
Blues v bombers
Roos v dogs
Saints v dees
Hawks v cats

From a north perspective I reckon our 4 week block will include dogs, Essendon and dees and maybe 1 of the Sydney teams

Expecting those Sydney teams to be playing each other along with the vic clubs in the first 4 back

The AFL don't play all of their big chips in one round, particularly a round that will draw huge numbers anyway since people are so desperate for footy. They'll have like two "blockbusters" and the rest will be standard match-ups, and everybody will watch them anyway.

Way too many random 5 day breaks within that fixture (especially the teams playing Thursday nights), will be unlikely to happen especially as the season is just restarting unless all teams are playing off regularly 5 day breaks. All players will be still building a fitness base again when the season is starting, the random 5 day breaks will upset many clubs IMO.

Will they go with Sunday night footy with no crowds to worry about. Last time the had it crowds were poor but tv ratings were huge.

With 16 minute quarters and potentially 6 men on the bench I don't think it matters so much. There were a number of 5 day breaks last year

SA and WA will open the boarders to each other in the next few weeks. Opening boarders to the Eastern states is months away.

I get why clubs from SA and WA were put in a hub together but it is the wrong move by the AFL. They should be trying to get through games against Victorian clubs.

It’s not so much that 5 day breaks exist— it’s more how they are allocated. For example the Melbourne FC has two 5 day breaks in that four week block. As a club they will call that out for unfairness.

If 5 day breaks are regularly used by the AFL there will need to reassurances to clubs that they are more evenly spread. Clubs normally only agree to 4-5 day breaks to allow blockbusters— if there’s no crowds those games hold less value to the clubs

With the SA and WA clubs on the Gold Coast for the first block of games what are the chances of a Derby/Showdown played at Metricon/Gabba?
And with only 1 this season who will get the home game?

It actually answers itself. Definitely play these on neutral ground so no-one gets the home game.

Unless they keep for round 16/17 in sept hoping to get crowds in which case they wont do it at all in first part of season. But then you have issue of who has home game?

Also it limits the amount of games that can be played in the QLD hub. They can only play 4 games before a double up given Port v GC in R1, cutting off derbies means there can only be 3.

That was my thought too, but isn't the idea of shorter games that they can back up quicker and play more frequently?

If anything, the breaks are too long, and the 4 rounds would likely be played over 3 weeks.

Have they Actually said that only teams Within hubs will play eachother? That’s just an assumption everyone is making. I think the hubs are just a base. For training and home games.

They would probably program those games in the 5th or 6th round, with the hope, that if things open up earlier in SA or WA those clubs might get to play those games in their own state against each other. Not that it really matters much given won't be any crowds that early into this season whether they get back home or not.

Send SYD and GWS north.

First 7 weeks can have all the interstate games played off against one another, and a decent chunk of the VIC games played against one another.

Play all 28 Interstate games at Metricon and/or the Gabba.

VIC Hub games could be played almost anywhere. MCG, Docklands, even any of the VFL grounds (Casey Fields, Holden Centre, etc). But my guess is they'll generally stick to MCG/Docklands to stop nuffies from trying to attend.

After this, reassess and fly teams between QLD and VIC as necessary to finish the remaining fixtures.

Is that fair on the Swans or GWS though? Or do you mean they can fly in/fly out of QLD for the first half of the season?

I mean whatever's easier for them. They can come down and join us and stay at a hub down here if they want.

Just so that we don't have too much unnecessary travel for the first month or more at least. Personally I'm still predicting a second wave and the season getting canned.

Fair
Tigers pies seems like the blockbuster that keeps getting thrown around to open the June 11 restart

The other blockbuster they should do imo in this round is cats v hawks since we missed their traditional easter Monday clash

Every single game will be a ratings bonanza.

It doesn't matter who is playing or where they are playing, we are so starved of footy we will watch like a cat does a canary in a cage.

Four weeks of the Qld hub:
-Brisbane and Gold Coast* play the four SA/WA teams, all as home games.
-Each SA and WA team plays the two teams from the other state, one as a home game and one as an away game. Plus the two Qld teams as away games (as above)

It means that ADL/PA/WCE/FRE will have lost a home game, but I think that’s unavoidable. And the Qld teams have played four home games so will get a lot of travel coming up. It also means the derbies are kept in the bank.

*As Gold Coast have already played Port, one week will need St Kilda to fly up and host Port at Metricon. Saints get that gig because in the original fixture they were playing that matchup as a home game in Shanghai anyway. Gold Coast to fly south and play a Vic or NSW team.

Eg round 2:
Bris v WCE
GC v Adel
PA v Fre

Round 3
Bris v Fre
St Kilda v PA
Adel v WCE
(Someone v GC)

Round 4
Bris v Adel
GC v Fre
WCE v PA

Round 5
Bris v PA
GC v WCE
Fre v Adel
