Why wouldn't the Victorian clubs fly into Perth, play two days later, rest for six days, play again and then fly home?

An eight or nine day trip to play WC and Freo then back in Melbourne to play the rest of their fixture.

Quarantine I would think.

I think they are too precious to travel for a month, but a week and a bit - they can do that and call it even to six weeks in another state.

With Quarantine, it won't be a week and a bit. They still have to go through the 2 week quarantine which is when they will play each other. Then after that 2 weeks, they will play the WA sides.

The club can show this to the indigenous guys on the list, and for $1,800 they have further reinforced that the club highly, highly values the indigenous men and their contributions to the club and game.

Not to mention the possibility that this getting shared around will probably get some people to throw some dollars at them. Good move to make.

How does copying delusional Americans by simulating the death of Floyd have anything to do with Aboriginals.

If anything it raised awareness of world racism. Indigenous Aboriginals have been shockingly treated, and glad at least a domestic American issue has finally attempt to raise the issues here in Australia.

But Aboriginal spokespeople have been raising the issues that we have with bureaucratic red tape within aboriginal communities and are sorting out fairer solutions.
Way before this macabre act of simulating some ones death.

Saw this blowing up on Twitter this evening and I thought the response from both the club and the general twittersphere was wonderful.

Maybe I’m wrong but I thought “taking a knee” had nothing to do with the way George Floyd died. I thought it was taking a lead from the American footballer, Kaepernick, and protesting racism by emulating him.

In your scenario protestors are pretending they are the cop. It makes no sense. Taking a knee has been a way to protest racism since Kaepernick did it. Sorry if that doesn’t fit your narrative but that is the case.
Do you want them to lay out unconscious on the ground instead?

Of course not. Which is exactly my point. The gesture of taking a knee is not a direct reference to the manner of George Floyd’s death. It has been a symbol of protest against racism since Kaepernick did it in either 2017 or 2018.

Kudos to your club for stamping this fellows' papers. He nailed his colours to the mast and so did you Fremantle.

It says a lot and means a lot.

So, just to be clear the “kneel” is in support of stamping out racism and not necessarily in support of the BLM movement?

This was the statement issued by the players before game one's kneeling:
“Tonight’s gesture is one of support, unity and respect driven by the playing group. We stand in solidarity with our indigenous brothers and sisters for all people of colour. There is no place for racism. The knee is an expression of that support, we see strength in diversity, it makes us better as a football club and as a community. We will be there for each other always, especially at a time when many are impacted by what is going on around the world. We will continue to learn and walk this journey together.”

I suspect a few people are intentionally playing dumb about this since it is extremely well known in sports circles and very easy to find out about, but if you want to know the origins of kneeling as a gesture in this context then google NFL player, Colin Kaepernick, who in 2016 kneeled during the US national anthem instead of standing, as a silent protest about racism in America. All kinds of s**t hit the fan including the president weighing in, and the act effectively ended his playing career.

Really proud of Freo for this. Such a strong positive, progressive message coming from the clubs social media right now with the full support and promotion of Sonny’s statements. Game day irrelevant today, Freo is already a winner.

Ok i get you.
So where were the people taking up the cause a few years ago then?

I know - after all these years of supposed racism, why is it only now people are speaking out about it!!!

We should see if there is a gap in how Aboriginal people are treated and think if there’s something we could do to close it!!

Seriously though, don’t you think that maybe, just maybe, we’re standing on the precipice of history (globally) and perhaps thousands and thousands of small gestures - such as taking the knee - might galvanise us all to take a step into a better future. A future where people are judged by their actions, rather than the colour of their skin, their gender, their sexuality or any other characteristic they have f**k all control over.
