In fairness, that was 3 months ago - fair to say a lot has changed in 3 months
Agreed. Realistically we’ve been brought undone by one supremely stupid and selfish individual but we need any ammunition we can take to the table to not have to go in to matches undermanned. Gill’s statement is succinct and implies understanding of the drawn out nature of COVID management from the league perspective and the ever heart warming “we’re all in this together”; so let’s see.

Meh, we made the bed we can lie in it. I'd expect the same for other teams, when it happens and it will. I'd back us in to be up to our eyeballs in games against both Melbourne and Carlton.

Who does McKenna live with, does anybody know?

I’d be interested to see what the club had in place for him this period, given AFL players are subject to stricter isolation measures than the rest of us... and he has a very recent history of homesickness.

It’s hardly surprising he went out if he lives on his own.

If he doesn’t already, you’d hope an offer was made for him to live with a teammate or coach throughout this season.

He lives with his brother and brothers partner who are both corona free.

I'm sorry to hear he's contracted the virus and I wish him a speedy recovery. I'm also proud that the club will support him back into good health, despite not abiding by the rules.

That being said, I'm super disappointed he didn't take this seriously. This isn't the first instance where he hasn't listened to the club and his insubordination warrants a penalty from the club.

Most of all, I feel really sorry for the others whom have been in close contact with him and that have been abiding by the rules - they're now at risk through no fault of their own.

Okay, so as I understand it:

1. He went to visit his host family, which is allowed under the AFL rules?
2. He went to an open house which is a little ambiguous? If your lease is up, surely that's something within the guidelines?

I mean if the second one is a breach of protocol, he should cop his whack, but it seems like that should be within the protocols.

This is an example of what I hate about the AFL now. Why should he be punished any more severely than those who did the same sort of breaches but didn’t catch it? Seems just an absurd bit of, dare I say it, victim blaming.

The only thing that would deserve a ton of bricks is if he knew he’d tested positive and still went in with life

It's unclear if host family visits are allowed, although given how important host families are for interstate/overseas players it would seem logical that they are considered "immediate".

https://7news.com.au/sport/afl/covid-19-restrictions-ease-for-afl-players-c-1102056

Strict coronavirus restrictions imposed on AFL players have been relaxed, with footballers again able to participate in social sports and see family members.

Up to five members of a player’s immediate family will be allowed over to fall closer in line with restrictions on those in the wider community.

(I suppose it's unclear if the gaterhing has to take place at the footballer's house)

there's an undefined 3 - some kind of association with mates. without further detail, not much can be said about that one

On what has been reported he doesn't deserve the lashing he is copping.
Looking for a place to live and seeing your foster family, two pretty normal and important things.

What pisses me off is the anger directed at him for this when we have shopping centres bursting with people and businesses getting pissy when they can't have people in the office. Instead of the learning experience this should be that this thing is still around we have "but he ruined my Football!!"

Probably took more care than most people are and now he's the face of it.

Yep, agree. Isn't the real point the utter stupidity of the club allowing all back line players to do weights together. Players only do what they're told. Contact tracing results will be interesting - whether its the house inspection. Think victoria needs to step up its community testing again.

McKenna did weights by himself

I'm not going to climb into him for what he's done but he's broken the rules, plain and simple. AFL players have stricter rules than the average punter to make sure the season keeps going, he actively broke those rules, twice....

Why cant our club and its players just follow the rules ffs.

Apparently he did weights by himself so..

We really need a bit more transparency at this point. What the rules are exactly, how they’re being applied and what Essendon/Conor actually did.

I’d have preferred if his identity were kept under wraps at least until we could get the whole story and not just slowmo shots of him clearing his nose while everyone guesses and rants.

They weren’t supposed to tell us what the rules were by the request of the players through the AFLPA to avoid this exact scenario. But now that it’s come this far they really just need to go the whole hog.

A little bit of information is a dangerous thing.

The statements coming out of EFC reek of Dean Wallis.
