MCG to host GF through to 2057

Lol right on cue

Would sell out easily even with the borders closed and no WA teams in it.

But tell yourself whatever you need

The tickets would sell, but the AFL's stakeholders (you know, where the money comes from) wouldn't get there...

Do you really think Gil would hold the GF in a place that wouldn't let him and his mates attend? (let alone fulfill the multitude of contractual requirements).

I don't get the discussion, why would they hold it in Perth anyway? If it was going to be anywhere it would probably be Sydney. Adelaide would run 2nd.

Because Perth have a new stadium and think they’re now the centre of the universe

Besides last summer showed Perth people are fickle, if it’s over 30 degrees it’s too hot and they won’t show up like the cricket test played in front of an empty ground. Given the AFL GF will be in November that should rule Perth out!

As sad as it is true, the AFL sells about 20k seats to Toyota and co who spend big $$$ on prominent league advertising in exchange for the best staff party in town. Then you have all the ex-player entitlements.

Then the remaining seats will be split 50/50 to the two home teams, will be about 15k seats each. Not great.

Watching West Australians try and convince themselves that 50,000+ people flying into their state to see the GF is possible, even if it was allowed is funnier.

Perth is no different to Melbourne when it comes to 'event goers', you'd hope footy fans would get 'first dibs' on a seat on GF day, the free loaders in the far queue.

Long way to go here, the Pies president wants money, guess he made that comment as a media commentator.

I can understand the cynicism of Victorians when it comes to paying $1k+ to see their team play. Its 'par for the course' to WA fans.

Hence Eddie McGuire's comment that another state can buy the grand final.

The AFL is short of cash this year, and if someone came along with $50m for a once-off, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

By freeloaders, you mean the corporates who put millions into the league?
Or the players who have GF tickets in their contracts?
AFL members who put tens of millions into the AFL?

Yeah, the AFL can piss all of them off...no problem.

They can all attend, they just need to come over early and isolate for 2 weeks

Firstly the ever increasing number of cricket followers, there are 25k, not a one in Perth, & the 16k of AFL members that dont pay their money to their clubs, club members get those seats.
40k of seats for the competing clubs, more for them yep.
Little doubt the Perth version of sponsors will be up at the trough, no cricket types.

Will the 40k of competing clubs be used is the discussion?

They all pay for seats.

Competing club members wont be an issue if it's in Perth...They wont be able to go.

e.g. Collingwood Vs Port....How are you going to get 40K fans from those states to Perth for the game? (on top of all the others...)

According to WCE fans, when they play in Vic, getting 15K to the game is damned near impossible during normal times....and you want to get 3 times as many to Perth during restrictions?

They all pay, wow, hold the phone, they all pay.
Why is it that the G on GF day is a sacred cow, 60% of the crowd arent members of the competing clubs - no wonder its important to ensure more members dont get to see the GF.
Why is GF day locked up, the game you play the season for is the only game that cant earn you the gig, even have to play it on your opponents home ground in his home state, you travel, they dont.

If interstate fans dont travel, so be it, its exactly as happens at the G.

Hardly 'freeloaders' though.
Those tens of millions that go into the game pay for a lot of things after all. (most of them NOT in Vic)

Practicality.

100K stadium, giving both more people access and maximising both the experience and the revenue, and a city that allows the most people the potential of having access. (unlike, say, the most isolated city on the planet)

Big difference between don't can can't.

15K airline seats for 15K patrons is going to be tight.

40K+ trying to catch 15K seats just doesn't work.

I've said it before, but the biggest argument for keeping the game at the G is that the second biggest AFL city and stadium (and thus the second best choice in some respects) is the most inaccessible city in the world.

You complain about Victorians 'freeloading' and getting into the game as neutrals, and your solution is to have a much higher proportion of West Australians freeload and get in to the game as neutrals...

Eh? Pretty sure a grand final at Optus would give the AFL a clean stadium. What freeloaders are you talking about?

Glad to see you looking at the issues, sadly only when you might miss out.

16k of AFL members that dont pay their money to their clubs
All AFL memberships include ~$200 which goes to their club of nomination (the club you chose that gets you 1st priority for finals tickets).

Idle speculate all you want, but at least make sure it's factual.

You pay your money to the AFL not your club - you reject what your club offers.
Its an anachronism of the VFL, & the Melbourne clubs are the losers.

Ask Kwality

His definition seems a bit fluid (although to be fair, that's usual for him), but given he thinks 60% at the MCG are freeloaders, and mentions competing clubs, I'm guessing he means those who aren't members of those clubs.

How many members of 2 non-WA clubs would get to a GF in Perth?

You're the one who, in the name of 'fairness', is proposing a far LESS fair solution.

but you attack me for pointing it out?

Why would it be any different to a GF in Melbourne between non Melbourne clubs?
Same gouged air fares, whatever it costs, charter planes .... a new experience.

Freeloaders, perhaps I should use 'the entitled' who get to a GF every year.

Can someone please explain the logic here, you do t want AFL or MCC Members attending even though a lot are long term club members. Instead you want all the tickets to go to club members at a grand final that will not have any WA teams in it.

So why do WA fans want the GF but don’t want to be able to attend themselves?

Its about the concept of playing the game outside Melbourne. Competing club members should be the priority wherever its held.
A GF is an experience all footy fans should have, preferably with your own team competing, better again winning.

IF a WA club can earn a gig, even better for the passion.

This year? Not many I'd expect. Melbournians are going to be lucky to be able to leave the city, let alone travel interstate.

But he's got a point, a club member should have priority over an MCG member to attend a grand final.

AFL members, only competing club members, the rest of the seats to competing clubs.
