Preview Round V: Dees vs the lethargic Tigers

The service to him against WCE was comical and he got monstered accordingly by probably the best defence in the league (at least in the pre-COVID/HUB days)

However, he had plenty of opportunities against Carlton and for the whole of the 2nd half Weitering beat him on the wing again and again. Couldn't even really bring the ball to ground or impact in anyway.

He then toils away against the Cats with Taylor not playing and Stewart out for the game and has a decent enough showing, impacting the contest when it was in his area and kicking a good goal.

What next? Without Astbury last year the Richmond defence had bags consistently kicked on them. Which TMAC will show up? Can blame the midfield's delivery most of the time but our forwarldine had plenty of looks on the weekend and couldn't kick the goals needed. Chicken and egg blah blah, but TMAC should be playing a whole lot better than he is.

The club scape goating Weideman/Brown for poor performances is missing the point.

Play Weideman FFS. Even if he's sh*t, he'll free up space for TMac

Weideman or Brown has to play, I'd really like Weideman to come good, but Brown might deserve first shot, he seemed good in the pre season matches from what I can remember, and he leads up the ground a lot and gives options

Totally hits nail on head. Further more its our absolute inability to have any dictation on the game what so ever. We have no control and no system to score.

We had one in 2018

If Weid gets to play purely (or 90%) forward I think it'd help he and us a lot. He is generally pretty good at providing those options up the ground but gets lost/rooted in the ruck.
TMcDonald or Tomlinson could probably be ok as a backup ruck. It might help Tom find some footy and form.

Hopefully our clubs leading goal kicker this year comes in at single digits, would look amazing on the honour board at the club.
Last time that happened was 1889 it looks like. http://demonwiki.org/1889. W. Smith led the goalkicking with 9.

And what a year it was. Quasi-merged with University and took a bunch of their players. Our best player transferred to Carlton despite us trying to stop the clearance. Finished 11th of 12 teams and 3 of 4 wins came against 12th placed Footscray (one of which was on protest as they had won on the day but fielded an ineligible player). Had 74 players for the year, the most for a single season of any club in the 19th century. Got beaten so badly by Fitzroy that the papers declared the club dead. The club announced it was in deeply in debt and begged for money from members and former players. Ultimately ended up getting bailed out by the MCC and therefore becoming a section of the MCC, otherwise the club probably would have been wound up.

Yeh that's a good point Weideman does suffer by having to ruck. reckon we need to find someone who can play ruck at times so Gawn can have the juice to sneak both forward and back throughout the game. Pre 2019 it seemed he was sneaking forward a lot more and get shots on goal. Now he has to ruck basically all day and understandably can't stretch the ground as much, the opposition don't have to worry too much about a 208cm giant sneaking forward. When he does move forward, it feels like a slow play which then makes it far easier to negate his presence. I've never liked Tmac in the ruck, similar to Weideman it just throws his game out. So maybe Tomlinson is the one to be trialled to ruck for some longer (but still very short) bursts. perhaps this is where luke jackson could fit in down the track, that second ruck option along with whatever primary role he ends up in

"Melbourne want Harley Bennell to 'work on areas of his game' before he is picked in the senior side again, unlikely to face Richmond on Sunday."

Kicking too many goals in scratch matches. Needs to kick less goals and continue to work on his Whirlpool learnings

Not getting 95% of his touches at the ruckman's feet? Not having 10 clearances a game because he's receiving? Not enough inside 50s each game because they aren't barrelled straight back out for another go?
He didn't set the world on fire Vs the Blues but was tidy in possession and wouldn't be any worse than our other HFF options.

He had like 17 touches in 50% game time, didn't really miss a target and looked to be playing in 3rd gear in his first hit out in a long time.

Looked clean and found the ball at will.

The best bit is we take a punt on Bennell, somehow get him fit then don't play him because his CP numbers aren't high enough. It's amazing

Doesn’t p-turn and handball to stationery targets in the maul enough. Can’t believe we wasted a list spot and rookie salary on this hack!

also said one of his issues was running out a game whereas Vandenberg could

Don't know what games this dickhead has been watching

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says recruit Harley Bennell has to work on his “contest and defensive elements” to get back into the Demons line-up.

Goodwin and this club can go and get ****ed. It's a sick joke.

It's amazing.

We get a bargain basement player that does exactly what we need, despite being a bit rusty, and we play him in the 2s whilst our other forwards squander record level inside 50s.

If we're honestly going to drum into his head that he needs to worry about "contest" and "defensive elements" then we will find a way to have him forget how to kick goals

So if it wasn't already abundantly clear, literally the only element of the game he values is contested ... Even tho we're still one of the best contested teams in the comp, but haven't been able to score/win for 18 months ... but this is somehow still the only focus ... * me

This club has surrendered any football judgement to junk data. It’s everything that’s wrong with modern football. It’s why most teams are full of unco *s that can jump high and run fast. Any rare unit that has an ounce of flair will be swiftly admonished by a nincompoop, control-freak coach for ‘breaking team rules’. Everybody knows the game is stuffed, a first step to rectifying it would be to ban the coaches and all of their number crunching hangers on.
