Resource 2024 Squad Selection & Ratings

Ratings updated following the recruitment of Tim Kelly during the trade period (presumed that he will be taking the available number 11).

The addition of T.Kelly to what was already a strong squad, takes its overall ranking into A+

If you put Rioli in the starting 22 instead of Pet/Cameron the Forward rating goes to A++ :(.

Man the team looks completely insane. So much quality. Just need the mental game.

Imagine sitting down with a whiteboard over the Summer to run through some stoppage and CBD tactics and scenarios.

The magnets are labelled by player:

NAITANUI
SHUEY
YEO
KELLY
GAFF
SHEED
REDDEN

Van Berlo won't put pants on until he has to go in the coaches box in round 1. Better send that man an express delivery of lube and tissues!

Can we cuddle?

(Out of interest, how do you rank the other contending squads?)

Rankings for the whole competition appear as such:

Team Ratings-01.jpg

Please note that the above output is exclusive of all injuries and suspensions, giving a best-case scenario (for example, the inclusion of Rioli makes the Eagles A++).

Heavy injury tolls during the season for Richmond and GWS have depressed their ratings to level less than what would otherwise be expected - I suspect they will both rise rapidly once those impacted players get some more games and continuity of ratings into them.

Adelaide are the biggest underachievers of all clubs going by this, it will be interesting what will happen to them in the coming season with the coaching change.

It is also very clear just how far removed Gold Coast are in comparison with the rest of the competition.

Question

Eagles depth is poorly rated in this analysis, is this a natural consequence of having a very settled list?

Season 2020 is now underway (pending impact from COVID-19)

Squad Selection:

Round 1 (vs Melbourne @ Perth Stadium).

View attachment 843805

Kelly makes his Eagles debut; Brander listed to play his first home game to no crowd.

A very strong team selected to open the season.

Would look so much better with Allen and Rioli.

Ratings updated from Round 1, despite the COVID-19 hiatus.

Five of the top 20 ranked players are Eagles (Hurn, Yeo, McGovern, Gaff and Shuey). Kelly comes in at 29.

Gaff makes a return to being the highest ranked outside midfielder in the competition.

Yeo has a career-best ranking, A++ now the highest ranked onball midfielder in the competition.

I really hope we get a 17 round season in this year. Would love to see how we go with a great list and a fair fixture. A rematch against Collingwood in the GF would be a dream.

After 80 days of lockdowns, isolation and lizard people the Eagles are back for Round 2 of the now reduced 2020 season.

Squad Selection:

Round 2 (vs Gold Coast @ Metricon Stadium [Carrara])

Just the single change from Round 1 with Hickey making way for Allen who has returned from injury.

The forward line receives a highest possible A++ rating.

So we're in with a shot then?

We're the best team on paper but it means nothing if we don't win this year. We need everyone fit and firing by finals. I reckon Schoey might bring the defense to A but I disgress.

Ratings updated after the Round 3 set of fixtures.

Numerous players sliding down the ratings, which is reflective of their disappointing output in recent matches.

For the first time since these ratings were initiated, Kennedy slumps to a C rating among key forwards (he is still managing to scrape in a B rating as a non-key forward for the time being).

Ageing bee-yoo-ta-fully! :moustache:

Squad Selection:

Round 4 (vs Port Adelaide @ Metricon Stadium [Carrara])

WCE-Selection-2020-R4.JPG

Four changes made for the hub match on neutral ground after consecutive losses by considerable margins.

McGovern returns from suspension to join Hickey, Cole and Jones as additions to the squad.

Making way are Schofield, Rotham, Petruccelle and Allen.

2018 premiership player Cole will play just his third match since the bye in 2019.

Jones becomes the second player to debut for the club this season - like Kelly he started his AFL career with Geelong, last playing in Round 20, 2018.

EDIT: Late change.

McGovern withdrawn as a late change, with Schofield in to face Port Adelaide.

The defence is significantly rated lower as a result.

Squad Selection:

Round 5 (vs Sydney Swans @ Metricon Stadium [Carrara])

WCE-Selection-2020-R5.JPG

Four changes for the second week in a row as a team wildly out of form tries to make it third time lucky playing on the Gold Coast this year.

McGovern makes a timely return from injury to replace the suspended Schofield whilst for the second time this season Hickey is dropped after a single appearance with Allen taking his place. An injury to Brander allows Waterman to feature for the first time this season.

But by far the most controversial change is the omission of the expansive-playing Jetta for the more limited, but defensively-minded Nelson.

In a sign of how far player rankings have already dropped, a near full strength squad can only now manage a 'B' rating overall.

Squad Selection:

Round 6 (vs Adelaide Crows @ Gabba)

WCE-Selection-2020-R6.JPG

Two changes forced by injury for the final match in the Queensland hub.

Cameron, recovered from OP, makes his first appearance for the season replacing Jones.

Ainsworth, brought in as replacement for injured captain Shuey, will feature for just the fourth time - his last involvement being over two years ago in Round 16, 2018.

Amazing it has been that long between drinks for Brayden. Hopefully he fires and shows a bit as his selection does have a "last chance saloon" feel to it.

Simmo said yesterday that's he's given Brayden a very clear role that plays to his strengths, so it'll be interesting to see how he's used. He's not an overly big body to be put in to create space and block for our A graders.

The journos minds went straight to a tag, which I don't mind based on his endurance, but I'm not sure he's got the mass to tag the Crows big bodies. And I don't want to see him on a forward flank negating Laird.

Kind of hoping he turns into a Priddis tackle machine whose role is get ball and distribute by hand, or tackle man with the ball. Rinse and repeat. If you find yourself in space to use it by foot, wait for the overlap coming behind you and dish off a handball 😂
