You'd be horrified to learn that some of them have also said that whilst it wasn't nice being taken from their families at a young age, it was the best thing that ever happened to them!

Pfft. That didn't even happen.

Myth.

You know what folks, us non bogans (yes there are a lot of non bogans in this country) are really feed up with boganism and its rise in the past decade (funny enough its all happened during the cruel and nasty howard years).

I don't vote Liberal, but surely you realise that being that this issue is restricted to Sydney - and much of the more violent nationalism is also found in that city, that blaming the Federal Government over one state might appear a bit biased on your part?

If anything, I would blame NSW's overly "tolerant" policing towards gangs made up of minority groups for the rise in violent mob behaviour.

Howard has nothing to do with the running of Sydney.

Don't call me a bogan! Nor am i ignorant! I just have a different view point to you so ******** off with your labelling!

And i bet i have spoken to more Aboriginals about this kind of stuff than you have ever met in your entire life!

Your ideology is akin to a boagn. Sorry but thats the way i read your post.

And the aboriginal comment..hahah. I have heard and read that excuse many times before and most of the time it is used by ignoramuses to justify their stupid and racist way of thinking.

Thats the problem with simple bogans. All they care about is a plasma screen and how to pay of there mortgage. Morals and bigger issues can go to buggery. They don't pay the bills do they.

Stop thinking with your hip pocketing for once and look at the bigger picture. Life is much more than just interest rates and credit cards!

I laugh at being called a bogan coz you throw it out there so easily but you couldn't be further from the truth. I don't worry about interest rates or credit cards for myself either, as I own my house and pay my credit cards well before the interest kicks in. But not everyone is that fortunate are they. And I'll take a prosperous country with a few minor foreign policy issues over the alternative which is pretty well the same thing just with a lot higher probability of screwing things up domestically

Exactly.

Also i believe with Sept 11 and Bali etc.. is the reason behind the rise in patriotism, although Australians always have been.. its just gone up a touch due to the latest acts of terror.

Surely you jest? When i was in Melbourne, away from ilefty suburbs like Northcoate, fitzroy et al, Melbourne is on par.

I was shocked at seeing the amount of people with flags in their front laws along the mornington penisular and suburbs like frankston are just as bad as the shire.

And I am sick and tired of Melbourne people thinking they know all about the "nulla" issues. Have you ever been to cronulla pre dec 2005? Have you had to deal with aggressive, rude and loud hordes of young Lebanese males? I don't think you have in Sydney! That was the issue..it was a shame that booze and members of the national front turned into a race hate day.

Trust me once you start to frequent Sydney's innercity beaches and have to start dealing with these idiots on a regular basis (i.e everyday) the more you will understand the real reason for the cronulla riots.

EDIT:

Spot on, i actually missed this bit!

But as a whole Australia is a racist country. Thats the opinion of many overseas.

We don't have to change our symbols, flags, our history or our view points on anything FFS!
Look up the word ‘proletariat’ and can I kindly ask you to reflect on its meaning.

I'm all for improving the country in any way possible but there is no way we should have to change anything to appease anyone!
Appeasement?

I think it has more to do with reflecting a changed cultural landscape.

If people don't like it go! And that's not bigotry, I’m not intolerant of others or their view points but I’m damned if I’ll stand here and let people like you force us to change things coz we were nice enough as a country to let a whole bunch of people come and enjoy our country when if it wasn't for us they would not have had the opportunity.
Of course you’re bigoted and intolerant.

You’re trying to deny people their place in society. In effect you’re saying that it’s ok for people born here to have a steak in the process of change, but people who flew here should shut up and conform.

And who said anything about forcing change? I’m entitled to argue my case and hopefully in time the majority will come round and change will be enacted by our democratically elected representatives.

P.S. And FYI I was born and raised here.

I've never read it. But i've spoken to many many aboriginals over the years (through being involved in certain projects) about issues re Australia and white fellas etc etc that i would be inclined to believe their view point more so than some lefty who thinks he knows what they think and thinks he knows what they want.

Leave your brain at home this morning, rick?

Did anyone go to last years BDO? Did anyone have to encounter groups of drunken yobbos (the ones you see at one day cricket games) walking around antagonising people and forcing them to kiss the flag or else there would be dire consequences? Did anyone see the group of anglo guys abuse an ethnic looking girl for refusing to kiss the flag?

And I ask again ..... if these yobbos did not have a flag, would they have stood quietly and watched the artists? Or would they merely have used another method to get under people's skins? The flag was just a tool they were using and not really the issue at all.

Its hypocritical you generalising footfreak as a "racist" or "bigot" without knowing him. That's just what racists do when they form their own bigotted opinions.

They generalise - and so are you, so get off your high horse.

Umm no need to. I just read what he wrote and thats enough to form my opinion. Do i have to look at his skin and colour to form an opinion on him?

Oh i see this is a forum, so the style in how he writes his replies should not really reflect on what or how he really thinks in normal day life. Sheesh how racist and silly of me. Shucks!

92% of Australians are of European descent, 74% are Anglo-Celtic.
74% Anglo-Celtic?

I thought it was more like 60% and increasingly going down.

I’m not sure of the 92% being European either.

Australia has a very British identity, similar to most other British settled commonwealth countries.
Yeah but it’s less British than it was 50 years ago and it will be less again in another 50 years.

Australia is a nation of change and evolution and particularly over the last few decades with the advent of mass migration and the rediscovery of our proximity to Asia.

I'm just saying when I go down the Mornington peninsula, say Edithvale for example, there is a 75% majority of ethnic groups, yet I've never seen any trouble, or even tension there.

We don't have the gang problem in Melbourne that exists in Sydney. It's just a cultural thing. I'm not claiming there isn't Aussie Flags or even racism in Melbourne, I'm claiming that it is kept behind closed doors and would never show it's face at an event like the BDO. Partially because it's illegal to be racist in Victoria, and partly because our suburbs are more integrated between races.

I'm not saying it's anglo folks' fault, personally I think the blame lies with governments creating an us against them mentality either deliberately or accidentally. Whether it's soft or non-existant policing, or whether it's over enthusiastic nationalism, there is a problem in Sydney where white folks have felt teh need to show pride both as a way of "rallying the troops" and as a way of protection after so little action by the police.

I just don't think that action should be seen at an event like the BDO. I go to a musical festival to, well, take drugs, dance and listen to music - not to think about politics.

Oh and frankly I don't care what people overseas think of us racism-wise. I know it exists, but it exists everywhere and when I look at my group of mates and there's italians, greeks, viets, chinese, macedonians, africans, papuans etc. I know that we don't have a massive racial issue. Certainly not compared to europe and asia.

Because it represents our country FFS!!!!!! If you can't be proud of your nation then you should go live somewhere that you can. I'm not a flag weilding bogan who can't think for himself, and i don't think Australia is perfect but i'm extremely proud to be an Australian and the Aussie flag is representative of my country and i'll defend it wholeheartedly. It's not about the bit of cloth and who actually made it, it's what it represents.

Why would I be proud of being Australian? It's akin to being proud of having won the Powerball, it's just luck being born here. Be proud of what you can personally achieve.

Would I want to live anywhere else? No. Is this the best country in the world? Yes. Does this mean the place could be better? Hell yes, why sit on your arse and be complacent?

This national pride thing is a bit concerning. Another nation took it to extremes in the 1930's and 40's, although I doubt we could get that bad.

If you need to show 'pride' in things other people have done, then you're not doing much with your own life.

It's perfectly represented by football. I'm stoked when my team wins, I'm happy for the players who put in so much to achieve that. It seems strange that people are personally proud that their team won when they weren't on the field.

You miss the point.

You agree that you know little about this guy, but still you have enough information to brandish him into the racist basket, over there with all the other nasty bigots.

Thats exactly what a racist does when they form their bigotted opinion. It's the same prejudicial, generalising logic.

The difference being that you try to take the moral high ground.

Basically what I suggesting is that you dont call someone a "racist" at the drop of a hat because it makes you no better than an actual racist. This goes for anyone who willy-nilly drops the 'you are a bigot/racist/whatever' line on a whim. Its a tactic that is used to water down peoples actual arguments in the face that they have to defend themselves from the cries of racism.

:thumbsu:

In any case I'm hoping that you feel warm and fuzzy about 'outing' another of those dirty racists :)

I'm proud of my parents, but it's pure luck that I was their son. Nothing wrong with that. Same goes for your country IMO.

In the same vein people 'ashamed' of their country, and its past etc....

Exactly, why should we be ashamed of the past. Yes it is a shame what happened but we don't own that if we do things differently.

Probably not ... but these people are using the flag as an identifying mark, and by using this particular symbol, they are attempting to mark themselves as Australian and anyone that is not in agreeance with them as not so.

Nationalism is not a unifying force, and the rise of it in Australia makes me fear for the future, because the people who are using flag waving patriotism to espouse a racist cause (and it is a racist cause) are doing it to insulate Australia from change, and that's a dangerous thing.

How on earth can displaying an Australian Flag by an Australian in Australia be deemed racist !!!!!!

For christ sake - what planet do you come from.

Next thing you'll want the banning of eating meat pies in public because this is too Australian.

Truly a bizarre view of our country.

The issue isn't simply wearing the flag though.

The issue is walking around with the flag and threatening ethnic people to kiss it or get bashed. Targetting ethnic looking people to do so, is racist.

I don't think banning it will change anyone's behaviour though.

Akin to "Eat my meat pie or wear it".

Would you like them to ban cars because drivers might run you over , or ban bikes because of that tosser on Beach Rd. who ran the red light and killed the poor elderly gent ?
Of course not so they should deal with the issue i.e. the bashings, not ban the national symbol.
