Palmer hints CIA claims a poll distraction ploy

Clive Palmer has hinted that his claims the green movement was linked to the CIA were a ploy to keep negative attention away from now-Premier Campbell Newman in the lead up to the Queensland poll.
Mr Palmer suggested critics of coal expansion in Queensland have been bankrolled by the CIA in a bid to promote American interests.
He now says he would not repeat the claims, but that he does not regret making the statement.
"Without you (media), without Julia Gillard, without the Treasurer, without the Greens raising these things in the Senate, who knows where the attention might have been in the last weeks coming up to the election," he said.
"So it's wonderful that all of you could play a small role in having Campbell Newman elected as Premier of Queensland.
"So well done, you all deserve a round of applause."

There are quite a few pockets around. For example, the airport in WA. Military bases are another. Crown land can be either state or federal land. However, most of it is state land as it is used by the state, such as for utilities.

Oh well as I said earlier, we (both public and media) are complicit in our combined stupidity.

That said, in PR terms, he has just done himself a massive disservice.

As Australians envy is largely our vice of choice. When the public realise the joke was on them, even partisan lines might not be enough to keep the tall poppy syndrome in check. From captain of industry to billionaire fat cat.
 
States have always said that they have their own individual crowns. Australia of course is a constitutional monarchy under the headships of Elizabeth II and there is only one crown.

So there's an argument to be made that any crown rights in minerals anywhere in Australia belongs to the Crown of Australia, which of course is the Commonwealth of Australia.

And in fact one could argue that there is no such thing as a crown of a state because the state, as defined in covering clause to the constitution, the only definition given to a state that it is a part of the Commonwealth.

So it is the Commonwealth crown, there's an argument to be made that has the right to all and any royalties in any event. Mind you this argument has never been made before and who knows how far it might go.

State crowns are referred to as "the crown in right of XXXX", in order to rubber stamp the sovereignty of a particular state. However, these "crowns" all come under the crown of Australia.

As for the land grab, the Federal parliament can grab whatever they like under "just terms".

I also welcome Clive Palmers right challenge in the High Court. Most of the rest of us can't afford it.

Have to give it to the man even though he has said he won't, reckon he is testing the waters and waiting on his contemporaries to do the heavy lifting before pouncing. Has the dumb cunning as a cartoon villain.

Still announcing his dastardly deception re CIA funding for the Greens was truly Monty Burns-esque. May bite him hard in the arse(s) (is their a plural form for this) when trying to rally popular public opposition to his/their cause.

I don't think that's correct.

I think they would stand side by side in matters of precedence. I don't think the colonies would have had the intention to give away what was essentially their landholdings at the time of Federation.

The crown of Australia didn't exist when the consitution was created.
 
Drew Hutton has a very strong case for defamation against Palmer and now he has every reason to follow through with it. Not that it would worry him in the snse that it would be but a blip on his wealth radar.
 
so he has now come out and stated he said those claims to take pressure away from the lnp

this man is a threat to democracy. just because he has squillions of dollars it should not mean he should be able to voice just s*** to influence an agenda.

watch him do the same for abbott next election

He doesn't have a case of slander.

It requires that publication (whether it comprises written or spoken words or other matter, such as an illustration) is defamatory if it conveys an imputation about a person that lowers the person’s reputation in the eyes of reasonable members of the community or causes them to ridicule, avoid or despise the person.

No reasonable member of the community believed that Hutton was a tool of the CIA.

Look no further than our flawed constitution.

It concentrates massive power in the cabinet by means of it's unfettered adherence to "democracy", which in turns turns governments in to the easily manipulated pawns of the corporatocracy.

Alienate the intelligent and frighten the stupid. Rinse. Repeat.

We are nothing more than a bunch of colonials that simply changed masters.

The state boundaries exist as the constitutional reality of federalism.

However, you only need to look to section 51 (xxxi) of the constitution or read the Tasmanian Dams case to understand that virtually any scenario can be theoretically manipulated. The wide spread moronic adherence to party politics makes this even easier to achieve. Then there's the potential of section 111.

Whitlam was in fact looking at ditching the states back in 1975, and this led to the amazing scenario of the Victorian parliament repealing it's constitution (a power it did not have) and re-enacting the act verbatim in the middle of the night as "Victorian law".
 
The Bligh Government were certainly headed for an incredible win before Palmer came out with the CIA conspiracy. Well done Clive for diverting attention away from Newman.

Especially given the rather rambling and mildly comical nature of the announcement.
