if Rhey have half a brain will choose footy. Only 11 players can play for Australia and make a living. 396 players can be best 22 at any point for an AFL club and make top dollar. Be silly to choose cricket

Depends on your footy prospects really.

Matthew Wade was a good junior footballer but obviously at his size getting drafted and finding a spot at AFL level would have been tough.

Mitch Marsh was a gun but both Marshs made of glass, no way would his body have stood up to AFL.

Then Alex Carey did pick football but didn't make a dent with GWS so switched back.

Those three all way better off with cricket.

Newtown are a strong club and will be in the top 3 sides in under 13s. Both would be in the best handful in the team.

Wocjinski is a year older and at the same club.

Without adding any extra pressure , the club should offer assistance and coaching to ensure he keeps his options open. Build and improving his skills etc.

Of course with these aligned players now one can't guarantee that they will land at your clubs unless the club sees an obvious benefit. For example Daicos son that is coming up ... has been mentioned as an early pick..one can be assured that Collingwood will be all over him. To me this is why I would remove discount on FA for the first round , keep it for the second and players third round on have a high discount, and do not cost much at all if anything. All clubs should be encouraged to draft the fringe father sons ..not just the gun quality ones. Thinking about our Father Sons recently , one can see Geelong are tiring to do the right thing... Its easy to draft a Farher son who is as good as Rowel, a bit harder when the fringe.

i can imagine a lot of that is regulated also by the AFL and affiliated bodies. At what age is it acceptable to indoctrinate a young player into the clubs systems?? Is 12/13/14/ too young to take them under the clubs wings for academies and trainings?? Or perhaps just a glimpse enough to wet their appetite and hunger to work hard at footy and make it to the grade??

but potentially they aren’t allowed to bring them in till they are x age and the AFL perhaps won’t allow them to train with the next gen academies... so do they have enough quality father sons to set up a stand-alone FS group?? Or are there even enough of them AFL quality frequently enough to warrant such financing?? One can imagine it ebbs and flows and would be dictated year by year if it’s worth the investment and almost function as a pop up academy rather than an ongoing thing.

perhsps even such academies could really save us from a Nathan ablett situation... where AFL and it’s pressures got the best of him, it could be used to help mentor him and to deal with the pressure in a mentorship way under the Tutorage of someone like ling.

or perhaps even a superior talented junior father son who is excelling at another sport, encourage them to give football a go and put them on the path. As these kids generally are good at many sports.

assuming they are AFL level your better off going footy. Cricket is a much bigger gamble and the odds are much harder of getting a spot in the Aussie team than one of the 396 best 22 spots on an AFL team.

also maybe you can answer the question cats_09 asked before. What position are they playing at under 13/s moons kid and riccardis kid?? Are they key positions players is probably what people are hoping to hear at lest one of em

just imagining another Mooney streaming out of the goal square 6ft5 key forward. Probably already ripened with hatred for hawthorn which will be a bonus.

already imagining jagger playing for us in a grand final against hawthorn with a similar shot on the goal line to his old man... can you imagine??

Its good to dream... but lets not get carried away here. Kids are 12 and 13 ffs...

Lets revist when they are 17 or so... the dreams are fun no doubt but they are still kids.

And im all for the FS tradition and seeing the 2030 GFC team full of 07/09/11 era kids.

But again.. let them be what they are..... they'' have enough pressure with the surname without us piling on at age 13

There are now a helluva lot of spots worldwide where cricket journeymen can make a decent living outside the Test team for 12 months of the year, and for much longer than the average 5-year AFL career.

I not sure about Nathan or personalities like his suit the professional game. he is not the only talent that could not cope with the demands of the profession environment ... but the one I have said for years was someone like David Clark...imagine if he had have been groomed and developed some of the nous of a Selwood and the kicking skills of a Duncan .... instead he struggled thru and I feel it was a wasted opportunity

How's your son talent-wise? Remember how we drafted Max Rooke - his old man notified the club that there was a good up-and-comer and Wellsy either went to Casterton himself or had a minion check things out. The rest, as they say, is history!
