Ash Riddell (NM) – Might be hard for North to keep Riddell in the long run as their 3rd or 4th best player, although I don’t see any team making a big play for her yet. Richmond could theoretically float an enticing offer, which would involve a bold move to give up another #1 pick. However, as evidenced by the sacking of Tom Hunter, the Tigers have shifted to safe mode now.

Kaitlyn Ashmore (NM) – Curiously signed a one-year deal in April 2019. North Melbourne remains her best fit. If you’re St Kilda or Melbourne or the Western Bulldogs etc, how many versions of Kate McCarthy or Aliesha Newman or Kirsten McLeod etc do you need?

Lucy McEvoy (CAR) – Geelong are second in a two-horse race, which isn’t necessarily over. Nominating for the Metro draft last year was a surprise, so it’s hard to categorically rule out circumstances surprisingly changing again.

Roxanne Roux (FRE) – I’ve seen a fair bit of back-and-forth about Roux’s true WA club of choice. The answer should be influenced by which WA club wants her more, which should be influenced by which WA club needs her more. The Eagles probably think it’s them, but they shouldn’t. The Dockers probably think they can win the flag in 2021 without her, but they also shouldn’t.

Ellie Gavalas (NM) – Played VFLW at the Bulldogs and would be a huge boost for their AFLW midfield. One interpretation of North’s early delisting announcement, however, is that they wouldn’t have cut Haines x2 unless there was an easier way to get down to 27 players (in other words, they might be confident everybody else is coming back).

Bonnie Toogood (WB) – Ought to be on every Victorian team’s radar (except maybe Richmond), and vice-versa.

Rebecca Privitelli (GWS) – Worth another look for a few clubs, especially Melbourne and Collingwood who were starving for contested marks I50 this year.

Kate Hore (MEL) – Her underwhelming ‘19 in a team brimming with on-ballers and small forwards could have led to an understandable one-year deal, but Hore has always been pumped-up from within the club—the captain, for example, predicted her to be the league’s breakout player of 2020. If the Dees stumble upon the opportunity to trade one of their gun accumulators for a solid tall forward, they should take it.

Daisy Pearce (MEL) and Erin Phillips (ADE) – Thinking both are out of contract, at the same time suspecting there’s no chance of them playing elsewhere next year.

Went creeping through a bunch of player instagram accounts to get confirmation on contract details, updated the OP with my findings. Most notable (to me, at least) is that Chloe Molloy did in fact sign for two years.

Also, here's a summary of the changes I think each club should aim for.

ADELAIDE
Using nothing but her sound grasp of the fundamentals, Brittany Perry had a better season than any of Adelaide's forwards (possible exception being Ponter, who had higher highs and lower lows). I don't know if she'd leave the Suns now for a team that repeatedly overlooked her, but it can't hurt to ask.

BRISBANE
New coach required imo.

CARLTON
Essentially the Blues just need what Lauren Brazzale can provide, but on a more consistent basis.

COLLINGWOOD and FREMANTLE
Not much left to add except perhaps some height to their backlines.

GEELONG
This year's squad of 30 included nine players born in or before 1990 and eight players born in 2000 or later, fwiw. What if Melbourne delisted 23yo Ainslie Kemp (who is without doubt a quality footballer but has just struggled with injury)? Other Victorian clubs would be put off by the potential of more knee injuries, but the Cats should be keen to gamble on a player like that. Because, after all, they’re not in the same position as other Victorian clubs.

GOLD COAST
The Suns lack an experienced voice in the centre square. If Lauren Arnell can be shipped off to Queensland, so can Katie Loynes.

GWS GIANTS
? The only thing missing from their list is self-belief! Every opportunity GWS earned during the last three years was choked away. Their willingness to embrace the "Dad's Army" moniker, and the captain's decision to pull the pin on the eve of pre-season, is rather revealing in retrospect.

MELBOURNE
Having talked up Tegan Cunningham in '18 and '19, this was a hard year to watch as both her ineffectiveness and dirty acts off the ball grew by the quarter. With the way the Demons have quickly cast aside struggling goal-kickers in the past, she'll be lucky to survive the axe. Sarah Perkins could make that decision a whole lot easier on Melbourne by losing 20kgs (or at least 10kgs to get somewhere near the underwhelming fitness levels of your Greisers and Stringers).

NORTH MELBOURNE
Occasionally swinging Emma King forward worked when it was to complement Jasmine Garner. Can't complain about the move of Garner into the middle, but it does mean North should be looking at bringing in a young key forward to fill that hole, rather than resorting to King grazing in the goal-square for long stretches. Re-drafting Chloe and Libby Haines would therefore not be hugely surprising.

RICHMOND
Hopefully some good news for Scott Gowans is imminent. If not, I'm sure Caroline Wilson will send an arrow in the direction of her pal Kate Sheahan (who btw is the biggest boys' club appointment in football) for neglecting a high-performing AFLW coach.

ST KILDA
Both Hannah Scott and the Saints suffered after she knocked back an offer to join as an expansion signing. St Kilda can win the contested ball and lock it in their F50 well, but they lack quality when transitioning out of defence.

WEST COAST
The one club that needs to entice star players from around the country just so happens to be the same club that can best afford to. Nevertheless, with so many of the league’s top players halfway through two-year deals, the Eagles might have to wait another season before a strong recruiting spree is possible.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
The Dogs will do well to hold on to several promising prospects who already have one foot out the door.

But if she was chasing offers from Melbourne clubs, and wanted to return to Melbourne, she would have played in the VFLW. Such a definitive statement is unjustified, unless you have information that hasn't been made public. There are all kinds of personal reasons that spring up, seemingly out of nowhere, resulting in players unexpectedly switching clubs. Happens every year.

Regarding yesterday's news of West Coast and Richmond each receiving an end-of-first-round priority pick to trade on, I started to think about the type of player it might allow the Eagles and Tigers to bring in.

For West Coast, I would say Hayley Miller is closest to that value of all the Freo players.

So through that lens, the decision by the AFL looks pretty astute. Both teams would be able to address a fundamental need by luring a readymade contributor, rather than worldbeater (present or future), away from another team. But, paper vs reality and all that, probably gonna need a bit of luck for it to work out so cleanly.

Roxanne Roux (FRE) – I’ve seen a fair bit of back-and-forth about Roux’s true WA club of choice. The answer should be influenced by which WA club wants her more, which should be influenced by which WA club needs her more. The Eagles probably think it’s them, but they shouldn’t. The Dockers probably think they can win the flag in 2021 without her, but they also shouldn’t.

Fremantle are on the verge of re-signing rising star Roxy Roux, with her manager Andrew McDougall confirming they were set to ink a new deal in the coming weeks.

Roux was taken by the Dockers pick 12, their first round, in last year’s AFLW draft after the forward was named in the under-18 All Australian side and helped East Fremantle to the WAFLW premiership.

The 18-year-old played in six of the Dockers’ seven games in 2020, kicking five goals including a great performance in the inaugural AFLW western derby when she kicked two goals and clunked four marks including a big contested one deep inside 50, which led to a rising star nomination.

Used as a back up ruck to fellow draftee Mim Strom, Roux averaged five hit-outs a game as well used her ferocity around the ground to lay a number of big tackles.
At just 170cm tall, the dynamic forward showed what the next generation of AFLW footballer looks like, with her excellent marking ability and massive kick giving the Dockers a real weapon up forward.
McDougall said Roux was excited to stay at Fremantle under former WA under-18 coach Trent Cooper, who she has a close relationship with.
“She really knows Trent Cooper is the right coach for her and can see a bright future at Fremantle,” he said.

The Dockers were unlucky not to be crowned 2020 premiers, winning all seven of their games, including a thumping 70-point win over Gold Coast in the semi-final at Fremantle Oval, before the competition was called off due to the coronavirus.
The AFLW sign and trade period opens on August 3.

It's arguably a case of easy come, easy go. At least a couple burst onto the scene every season before quickly fading out by the end of the next. Harris is probably the only permanent key forward to have improved each year.

Schleicher is one for Collingwood who I look at and think she definitely has the ability but it seems unlikely to materialise because, in addition to the obstacle of injuries, the Pies see her as a defender.

175cm, so on the shorter end of tall, but big enough to have pinch-hit in the ruck at times. Same height as Brazill, whose absence/presence in 2021 will no doubt inform a lot of structural decisions.

Prior to being drafted, she played in the WAWFL finals as a mobile ruck. One of the best on as well. It's what got her drafted I suspect, tall"ish", mobile and athletic.

Former Melbourne women’s captain Elise O’Dea could be on her way to Carlton as the Demons look to reinvigorate their AFLW list.

I mentioned a few posts up that Melbourne should think about trading out one of their mids, but this is a strange article: "The Dees have indicated they are keen to improve their draft position this year and are open to giving up experienced players to make that happen."... not sure how that's going to happen by dealing with a team that follows them in the draft order.

I think West Coast tragetting McCarthy is clever, and could apply to any of the talented Irish girls who have already moved halfway across the world to play the game. I hope they are putting the hard word on players in all of the other states as well (as I expect they will) to build their talent base. Getting the best young WA talent over 3-4 years will help them catch up to Freo eventually but they are coming from a long way back at the moment.

Carlton's draft position isn't irrelevant though. They don't have the picks to offer a fair trade. Melbourne would be talking to the Bulldogs or Saints if it was about bringing in a high pick.

I agree.

Until a trade is done the article is just speculation but a pick in the top half dozen would be much more valuable than a pick right at the tail end of the first round.

Two time AFLW All Australian's don't grow on trees - there are literally 20 players who have made the team that many times or more and while 28 is reasonably old it is early to be dumping her in my view.

In the women's comp the top end draftees are way ahead of their male counterparts when it comes to first, second or 3rd year impact. Even those who may be considered disappointing in their first year are usually developed more quickly by being given high TOG and chances to play important roles, both in AFLW as well as VFLW including in their draft year.

All clubs realise this and it is why any struggling Victorian club will press hard on a re-set and be fairly decent within 2-3 years whereas in the mens comp it takes 5 plus years (if it works at all).

Some of the less notable draftees seem to be more similar in that they take 1-2 seasons to break into the side and go past more established team-mates. If a side picks 10 youngsters over 2 drafts and most of them pan out they are well se for sustained success and that appears to have been the Blues and Pies strategy a couple of years ago.

The Bulldogs definitely went younger in 2020 and will probably be most affected by COVID-19 in that those players won't be developed nearly as much without a VFLW season to play. I honestly think Richmond will improve quickly if they head to the draft and develop talent properly rather than chase instant improvement.

Regarding yesterday's news of West Coast and Richmond each receiving an end-of-first-round priority pick to trade on, I started to think about the type of player it might allow the Eagles and Tigers to bring in.

Carlton's AFLW Hosking twins are set to be split with Richmond poised to acquire Hosking via a trade next month.
