Sorry, that’s nonsense. The difference is that the primary mainstream association of the word ‘gin’ is an alcoholic drink whereas the main association of the word ‘coon’ is a racist term.

It has nothing to do with indigenous people having less clout than African Americans - it’s about what most people immediately think of when they hear the word. If it was ‘Abo Cheese’ because of Edward Abo’s process, we’d be having the same conversation.

That is a good example that I agree with. But the idea of "primary association" and which culture has the biggest influence are certainly not mutually exclusive.
