we all love Charlie.. But imagine something like this.

Out - Charlie Curnow + 2 x 1st round picks
In - Tom Papley & Jack Macrae

Which outcome do you think will have us closer to winning a flag?
Macrae would be great but as if the dogs will let him go.

Charlie could be the best key fwd in the game. Trade McKay for Paps? Sure

I would imagine there would be an agreement behind closed doors between Papley and the Swans. ie- play your best for us this year and we will allow you to leave at year end. We would have done the same with Gibbs.

If the desire to come to Melbourne is real, it will happen. It’s a best case result for both teams. One gets a gun player for a crack at the flag whilst the other gets good draft capital to accelerate their rebuild.

With all due respect to the Swans, Papley will be wasting the next five years of his career there, instead he could be challenging for flags elsewhere. Then it’s up to us to get a suitable deal done.

From what I’ve seen I think so. Would only be behind Cripps, Walsh, Ed and Setters if we had him tomorrow.

Dow, Fish and Stocker are those outside the 22 who probably have a similar or higher ceiling, but it’s not about that anymore. Competition for spots is a good thing.

McLean an instant best 22 mid coming into his prime at age 24.
I've said it elsewhere, but I'm thinking it's more likely than not that McLean requests a trade this year for the sake of opportunity, and that Carlton would be one of the best fits for him. A side with an elite midfielder at its core (Cripps), some decent young talent (Walsh in particular) but is missing mature 2nd/3rd mids would suit him better than any. Would instantly improve your side and do really well at Carlton - he showed how good he could be when given full time inside midfield minutes when he was 21. We'll lose him for less than he's really worth, but not much we can do about that when we can't squeeze him into a regular spot in the side

For me, it's way to risky giving up 2 mid 1st rounders for any player

Spread your assets on a spread of talented players with the same currency, which will improve and cover needs in our list

2 x 1st rounders for Papley

Versus

1st for Witherden & Ballenden + 2nd

1st and the above 2nd for Liam Ryan

Makes much more sense to me
Yeah you can just pluck any player name for a hypothetical.

How often does a genuine A grader want to come to Carlton (or any club)?

What makes you think any of these players you mentioned are gettable, let alone want Carlton?

Everything I have read about Ryan (admittedly not much) tells me there's no way he'd leave WA. I really can't see any indication of this.

and when Mitch tells you to **** off because he's not moving to Sydney?

Or do you just really want to trade our talls?
Calm down.

Have a read of the thread. Someone suggested to trade Charlie. I said I'd rather trade McKay ... then McGovern.

Would I trade McGovern (and picks) for Papley? In a heartbeat. We have JSOS and TDK who can fill a similar role.

You'd be crazy not to.

I think McLean complements our other mids well.

He's a more contested version of Fisher, with more runs on the board to date. He's also more effective in front of goals than Fish. Decent chance he'd take Murphy's spot and add to our on-ball rotations.

He'd also come fairly cheap in terms of contract and trade costs.

Mid/late second rounder and the average AFL salary for a player who slots straight into the 22. If in 12 months time, Fisher has pulled his finger out and gone past him...excellent, then we've got an AFL quality mid/forward on a modest salary as an emergency each week.

If we can use second round and later picks to put pressure on our young players to step up, that's a good use of those assets at this stage of the rebuild. Newnes is doing it with O'Brien - Lochie either rises to the challenge and we come out ahead, or flounders and at least we've been getting more consistent output from a senior body in the meantime.

Why trade any players and weaken our list when we should be moving into contention?

We have the picks to get any trade done.
Cause there will be Matthew Watson and Kane Lucas like players available at those picks.

So obviously better to trade away players who we have spent time developing to get players who might/might not be any good, who then have to be developed.

Obviously.

I honestly feel like Carlton supporters don't appreciate how good Harry McKay is and will be.

The guy is an absolute freak, his ceiling is so high.
This whole scenario reminds of when we did our best to convince JK to fork off to WCS so we could get our bloke. IMO, no way is the nuggety FP worth what’s been suggested. If the current LM regime fork out the type of compensation being suggested they deserve to be thrown out.

There is no way Sydney would have already agreed to let Papley go, and I can tell you they will fight tooth and nail to keep him.

They are a young list and believe there is a lot of upside to them. IF Papley asks to leave again we will have to pay overs for him.
