This is rather crude analysis and the sample isn't large enough, but since the start of 2018:
  • In the 31 games that both Rockliff and Wines played, we've won 18 and lost 13. In these games, Rockliff averages 4.19 clearances (4.58 in wins and 3.65 in losses) and Wines averages 5.66 clearances (6 in wins and 5.19 in losses)
  • In the 10 games that only Rockliff played, we've won 6 and lost 4. In these games, Rockliff averages 7.23 clearances (6.88 in wins and 7.75 in losses)
  • In the 9 games that only Wines played, we've won 4 and lost 5. In these games, Wines averages 4.92 clearances (5 in wins and 4.85 in losses)
  • In the 2 games that neither Rockliff or Wines played, we've won 1 and lost 1—we were -1 in clearances in the win and -8 in clearances in the loss.
In summary, what can we take away from this? F*cked if I know.

The game has passed plodders with ordinary disposal by?

Westhoff staying in, and going forward, leaving Georgie Boy to play 3rd tall I don't mind.
If Westhoff goes forward, Georgiades is the second tall. Westhoff isnt going to suddenly become a reliable target after a billion games

Sack Hinkley

IMO they didnt select hayes or buzza to replace marshall because todd plays so high up the ground at times; hayes definently wouldnt have the tank for that and buzza is more traditional goal square full forward. Westhoff has the tank but not the form.

Lienert should have always been the one to replace McKenzie he is more like for like than Bonner. We saw the likes of gresham and jones stroll out of the centre last week, not sure how it will go with wines and rock vs the explosive oliver petracca

I think I remember someone from the club once mentioned that Buzza was a break-glass in emergency replacement for Charlie, so unlikely to replace someine like Todd. Although I quite like the thought of him just competing for high balls and bringing them to ground for our crumbers (without jumping against Dixon), plus pinch hitting in ruck and charging into Gawn at full tilt to hurt him!

The in's are predictable. Lienert is similar to Bonner, both have defensive weaknesses, but I actually prefer Lienert with his height. Westhoff was always going to get a reprieve after Marshall's injury. Buzza & Hayes are both not up to it yet. Our midfield was pantsed last week, so needed something changed. Rocky & Ollie in together gets another go! Will be interesting!

i actually think that Rocky is needed against the Melbourne midfield. We need to contain Petracca, and I reckon Rocky's inclusion helps. Sure both him & Wines are slow, but they actually offer something different. Wines with his bull strength, and Rocky is a ball magnet & good tackler in there.

I reckon Port will win this! I was far more worried for some reason against St Kilda, and especially because everyone is so negative! I love it ... Port by 3 goals.

I've never hid the fact I'm not a Rockliff fan, but Melbourne don't have a particularly explosive midfield, Viney, Jones, Oliver are all more inside types. Rockliff might not be as bad as he sounds.

Leinert is a better option than Bonner.

Still have a bad feeling about this one.

Christian Petracca is in incredible form and will eat Tom Rockliff (and Wines and Boak for that matter) for breakfast.

I think our defence and forward line is good enough to beat Melbourne. I think Gawn, Petracca, Oliver and Viney will beat Ladhams, Boak, Wines and Rockliff so badly that our advantages elsewhere won't matter.

I thought Gary Lyons' a week is a long time in football meme was funny, but this is Hinkley last week after Westhoff was dropped.

"Westy knows his game is as a true utility, so wherever we need him, we need him to play that role better and at the moment, it's as a forward-ruckman.

"He hasn't been able to influence the game in those two areas, and we think we'll look at some other options."

So what other options did we look at?

This is the key ... But Melbourne are up there with Port in being their own worst enemy. I think the boys are stung from last week's loss, and will win this.

No reason to overreact to these changes. We've got injuries and these are our best options. Below are the lists of players and where they're expected to play in bold. It looks pretty simple to me that the coaches have decided that Rockliff (mid) + Houston (Half Back) is better than Bergman (Half Back) + Houston (Mid).

Pure / Inside Midfielders:
  • Boak
  • Wines
  • SPP (forward)
  • Houston (Half Back)
  • Rockliff
  • Gray (Forward)
  • Rozee (Forward)
  • Butters (Forward)
  • Drew
  • Mead
  • Atley

Half backs :
  • Hartlett
  • DBJ
  • Burton (Tall Def)
  • Houston (Midfield)
  • Sutcliffe (Wing)
  • Mayes (Wing)
  • Bonner
  • Lienert (Tall Def)
  • Bergman (Forward)
  • Garner
  • Frederick
Tall Defenders :
  • Jonas
  • Clurey
  • McKenzie
  • Burton (Half Back)
  • Watts
  • Lienert (Half Back)
  • Grundy (Forward?)
  • Pasini

For those who are asking about Watts - watch the presser. Ken gets asked about jack and specifically says he's still finding his touch and that Jack is just getting trust in his body back currently but won't be far off. Sounds like Drew, Bergman and Mead are closest to getting games though with Wliliams pulling up sore.
