THE AFL has informed AFL Club presidents and CEOs that the AFL Commission ratified a recommendation by the Football Operations Department for no change to the current AFLW CBA and that the 2021 season should commence in February, with a nine-week home and away season, before a three-week finals series.

Plenty of our girls played in the QAFLW derby this afternoon when Bond Uni 4.9 (33) defeated Coolangatta 1.3 (9). Bond had Taylor Smith, Lauren Bella, Ellie Hampson, Charlotte Hammans and Kalinda Howarth meanwhile Cooly had Leah Kaslar, Sally Riley, Hannah Dunn, Georgia Breward, Jordann Hickey and Kate Surman. Ellie Hampson was best on and Taylor Smith kicked the most goals with 2.

Suns & NAB national academy members Annise Bradfield (former hockey player) and Maddison Levi (former rugby player) also played in the game and Bradfield was named in the bests for Bond. Both are eligible to be drafted by us this year and will almost definitely end up on our list. Levi's younger sister, Teagan, also played and was named in the bests for Bond with a goal to her name. Exciting stuff!

Bond Uni continued their dominance in the QAFLW yesterday with a big 10.12 (72) to 1.1 (7) win over Aspley. I'm not sure why but many of our girls who played for Bond last week did not line up for the Bullsharks yesterday (No Bella, Howarth etc) but it's worth mentioning Ellie Hampson was named in the bests for Bond again, as was Teagan Levi. That's two weeks in a row for T.Levi in the bests and she looks to be a big prospect for us next year when she's draft eligible.

However, perhaps the big surprise was a 5-goal, best on ground performance from Gold Coast junior Jasmyn Davidson who is draft eligible for us this year! It would appear she comes from a netball background and gave footy a go a few years ago when her school Assisi College established an AFL girls team/programme. As is often the case, she fell in love with the game after giving it a go and signed up for club footy at Broadbeach before transitioning to the QAFLW level with Bond this year. What a great example of how our game has grown on the Gold Coast over the last five or so years! She may also have a younger brother to keep an eye on in the future.

Coolangatta also played yesterday and weren't as successful against the reigning premiers Coorparoo with a 34 point loss. Having said that, our girls Surman, Riley and Breward were all named in the bests for Cooly so that's positive.

Both Gold Coast teams picked up victories in the QAFLW over the weekend. Bond Uni recorded a 21-point victory over Coorparoo and once again our academy girls stepped up and were influential in the win with bottom ager Teagan Levi best on (three weeks in a row she's been named in the bests) as well as 2020 draft eligible prospects Madison Levi and Annise Bradfield also named in the bests. Goals came from our very own Taylor Smith (2) and 2020 draft hopeful Jasmine Davidson (who kicked a bag of 5 last week). Bella, Hammans, Ernst and Hampson also played for Bond that day. Also worth mentioning our reigning B&F winner Jamie Stanton was named in the bests for Coorparoo in the same game.

Coolangatta pulled off a tight 5-point win over Maroochydore and our captain Leah Kaslar led from the front with a second best on ground performance which included a goal. Our own Sally Riley was also named in the bests for Cooly. Our other players out there for Coolangatta included Paige Parker, Kitara Farrar and Georgia Breward.

Both GC clubs are sitting in the top 4 at the moment with Bond Uni on top.

OK fair enough....I get it now. Thanks for the explanation, that puts it into perspective.

Although a photo of Daisy, mother of 18 month old twins, firmly entrenched in Melbourne, with a media gig with Channel 7 happening, would not be the person I would be dreaming of, to sign for the mighty Suns. Just sayin'.

But with all the media attention focused on the GC right now with all the AFL games going on, then I reckon we could be in with a shot of snaring some worthwhile talent, both AFLW and AFL.

So yeah, let's keep dreaming..it just might happen.:)

Doesn't appear they will be active in the trade period.

West Coast and Gold Coast – who both played their first seasons in the AFLW this year – are reportedly looking towards the draft

Definitely helps that we have some serious talent coming through our academy. Locals NAB National Academy members Annise Bradfield and Maddison Levi will definitely get drafted and others like Jasmine Davidson are a good chance to get picked up as well. We're fortunate to be in an area where there is next to no competition in terms of female professional sporting pathways. We are literally the only professional female sports team on the Gold Coast and that helps us to convince girls from all sports to follow our pathway.

What's the chances of getting Prespakis to The Suns?......

She and Serene Watson have been a couple for nearly 2 yrs now........maybe, just maybe....;)
coming off the AFLWlow, I doubt she will come to the Suns this year.. a few poor years from the Blues then maybe she will consider moving up to the GC.. She is only young though

How does that work -- Is Serene from Vic, or is Maddy from QLD? How'd they cross paths? lol

No idea how they crossed paths but.............from our Suns website, Watson starred when representing Queensland at the AFLW Under 18 National Championships this year, proving reliable in defence to repel opposition attacks and rebound. Watson has been in the SUNS Academy since the age of 15. She represented the SUNS in both the 2018 and 2019 Winter Series’ and has the potential to develop into a modern-style midfielder.

The Suns have conceded their inaugural list was too young and while they are still committed to drafting some of Queensland’s brightest talents, the club believes there remains a raft of undiscovered, mature age talent ready to take the next step into the AFLW.

With the Northern Territory and Townsville officially confirmed as Academy zones, a host of AFLW ready talents could land on the Suns’ doorstep with players who have lived and played in those regions for at least two years able to nominate solely for the Gold Coast region in the AFLW draft.

While the Suns have not ruled out trading for ready-made talent, Head of Women’s Football Fiona McLarty hoped to unearth the next crop of AFLW stars via the draft following the success of mature age selections Jade Pregelj, Hannah Dunn, Kate Surman and Lauren Ahrens.

“We’re not looking for anyone as good as and if we’re going to bring anyone in, we want them to make the group better on and off the field,” McLarty said.

“While we still think we have some good talent coming through and that hasn’t been picked up yet but we found we were a little bit young.”

Suns Academy talents Daisy D’Arcy, Maddison Levi and Annie Bradfield lead the race as some of Queensland’s best youth talents but McLarty said the Suns were also scouting what was on offer in the Northern Territory.

Clubs can re-sign 27 players, forcing at least three list changes but it is expected the Suns will make more than the required three changes.

Maddy Roberts is the only confirmed list change so far, stepping away from football to pursue a career with the New South Wales fire and rescue Academy.

McLarty said the pressure was now on the Suns and their list to improve once more following an unexpected finals appearance in their debut season.

“We always wanted to be competitive from day one and making finals demonstrated that,” she said.

“Last year, nobody had any expectations of us but now externally there is an expectation but we’ve also got expectations on ourselves.

“We want long term success, we don’t want to come out and win a premiership within the next two years at any cost and we want to set up the foundations for the future.”

For some reason I assume Maddy Roberts was gonna juggle football and the fire rescue, but I guess not. I guess she is stepping away for football for the foreseeable future
