2020 AFL Crowds & Ratings Thread

AFL really needs to understand that people don't want to watch certain clubs on a friday night. Teams like Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, GWS, North Melbourne will literally draw low ratings.

I think the big factor in that sense is blowouts. If there is a big club playing than a blow-out is hedged somewhat by the fans of that club....or people wanting to watch them belted. Nobody is getting anything out of Port smacking Melbourne other than Port fans

i know a couple of people who worked at the tennis center across the road and they said it was pretty noisy like a big crowd.

probably excited Blues fans initially i suppose who do have a decent fan base in the west

I went and was surprised at how many people went considering the teams and start time, was very loud too.

Wednesday Ratings:
Geelong V North Melbourne: Fox 176,000
Adelaide V Melbourne: Fox 251,000 (Adelaide FTA 112,000)

Seven. It rated 112k. Was the second highest show for the day behind the news in Adelaide. Mondays Port game rated 80k on 7mate (5th for the day in Adelaide).

Best team in the comp gets the multi channel and worse ratings than the arch-rival that is the worst team in the comp

This is great news foe our game and shows how loyal the Fans are.

AFL fans to the rescue

  • When AFL transmission ceased in late March and 80 per cent of club and league staff were sent home for two months - and some much longer - Collingwood president Eddie McGuire further invoked the depression gloom by warning of the dire consequences of a run on club memberships.
McGuire's strong language played out behind the scenes. Geelong boss Brian Cook was less pessimistic than some but the Cats, with pre-COVID membership revenue set around $14 million for 2020, budgeted for one-third of their members to request refunds.

Yet their pessimism proved unfounded. Despite the human tragedy of COVID-19 and the social and financial chaos which has unfolded for the competition since the pandemic started to spread in Australia, the AFL club members have stuck.

In a response described by league boss Gillon McLachlan as "amazing loyalty" and one which has surprised most clubs, only 1 per cent of members across the competition have requested refunds, albeit with significant numbers pledging their money through to 2021.
This year the AFL agreed to extend the membership close-off to August 31 which means, according to McLachlan, membership ladder leaders Richmond, with more than 98,000 members, could again break 100,000.

Gold Coast (roughly $3 million in membership revenue) are closing in on 15,500 members, passing their previous best of 14,100 in 2011, their first season. The NRL Titans by comparison have about 7900 members.

821k for the suns. Is that the highest rating game they've ever been apart of? Know that they've played the odd Saturday night game but surely that's near the highest total for them considering their lack of combined FTA and PTV.

The News Corp business inc Foxtel are being hit hard.

Foxtel in the outhouse: Things are bad for Murdoch’s pay-TV operation … and about to get worse

The pay-TV provider’s yearly performance was revealed on Friday as part of News Corp’s (its 65 per cent owner) result for the financial year.

Foxtel’s pre-tax earnings came through at $US323 million ($448 million), a fall of 15 per cent. It continues a decreasing trend in recent years, but the trouble for Foxtel really shows up in its viewership figures.

Subscriber numbers inc Kayo,Foxtel Now and Binge fell 14.2 per cent – from 3.24 million to 2.78 million.

“That’s one of the biggest drops in the last four or five years,” said telecommunications analyst Paul Budde.

The bad news out of that is falling advertising dollars, FTA & PAY, these are the dollars that fund sports rights that were the basis of AFL spending.
Imagine the AFL or any other sport without Fox? https://www.adnews.com.au/news/foxtel-saving-180-million-from-sports-broadcast-rights

I think the days of billion dollar plus contracts increasing with each deal from FTA and Fox are well and truly over maybe some other platform will turn up to fill in the gap?

Well, you're talking about most of Australia outside of Victoria.
Four games a week on FTA is sufficient for most non-expats.
If you want more then, simply go to WatchAFL - simple.
Only one of my friends that had Foxtel has continued with that.
Most have changed to streaming services and WatchAFL.

Oh, 2016. I've been trying to get some insight into them but it's one of the few things you cannot simply google
from Australia. Wookie?
As a proportion of population, ratings would be an order of magnitude lower than A league rates in Australia, and that's possibly generous.

So, at the level they may not get released at all.
