Maybe I should’ve put this in the entertainment thread, but I just had a little taste of the opium war between China and Britain and now I finally know how Britain acquired Hong Kong.

Anyone know a podcast that dives into the topic more deeply?

I heard about it on History on Fires coverage of the Taiping Rebellion where it’s only given a brief summary as a prelude to the Taiping Rebellion.

Had me going there for a second. I can see why they fought wars over it.

I honestly had no idea that Queen Victoria ran the biggest drug trafficking organisations in history. The Cartels have nothing on the Royal family and the east India trading company

Watched a movie called "Into the Wild" last night. Based on a true story about some dude that thought it would be a good idea to go and live in the Alaskan wilderness. Didn't have the necessary skills and ended up starving to death.

Anyway, there is this old bus in the movie which was the actual bus that the guy sheltered (and died) in. Have done a bit a reading on it now and it turns out that bus has become a tourist destination since the movie.

Now, whilst the movie did romanticise this guy's life a bit, you would think that it would also serve as a cautionary tale about the realities of life. But, no. Many people have been injured trying to get to this bus and in fact a couple have even died. It's gotten so bad that in the June just gone the authorities have had to use a helicopter to lift out this bus to stop people from endangering their own lives trying to get to it!!

Read somewhere there is a bridge downriver, maybe 5 - 6km he could have crossed if he knew it was there.

Watch a you-tube vid about " Agafia " in the Siberian wilderness. You might enjoy.

It’s a wild ride, how England stole $45 trillion from India..

But you can see the uproar now why when trump confident and Blackwater founder Erik Prince said he wants to privatise armies and start the East Indian company again, might’ve sent shockwaves around the world, it was no coincidence his businesses are in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

Millennial Drops Support For Socialism After Learning How Hard It Is To Get Avocado Toast In Venezuela
August 1st, 2018

article-2067.jpg

RIVERDALE, NY—31-year-old Darlene Austin has always been an avid supporter of socialism, but she recently had an eye-opening experience.

“At a vegan cafe, I met a guy from Venezuela,” Austin explained. “I asked him about how great it must be to live in a country working to end economic inequality, but then he went into a long diatribe about oppression, poverty, and murder.”

Austin admitted she didn’t listen to much of it since she always knew that socialism would have “a few bumps along the way.” But then the man said something that really concerned her: he asked what the crispy bread slathered with a green substance on her plate was.

“He didn’t even know what avocado toast was!” Austin exclaimed. She asked him about whether they had lots of avocados in Venezuela, but he explained it wasn’t just an issue of the availability of avocados but also not being able to get bread and sometimes not having electricity for a toaster.

“He said they never have avocado toast in Venezuela,” Austin stated, looking visibly shaken. “This made me completely rethink things. Socialism seemed like a great idea—a way to make sure everyone was taken care of even if they ran out of their parents’ money—but now I think it might not be ready for prime time.”

Austin said she was still glad Venezuela was trying it out, but wanted to wait until “they get all the kinks out of an equal distribution of avocados” before trying socialism in the United States.
Does the author of this awesome piece of satire know they've been cultivating avocado in Venezuala for at least 450 years and that it has its own native cultivars and species?

Probably not hey.

He probably didn't write it for people who look for any opportunity to google up some stuff in order to sell themselves as well read intellectuals.

Why are you always quoting me out of context, then angling for an online argument based upon a false premise? Isn't there a better billboard for you to spray paint over?

If you want to know why I ignore you most of the time, it's because we are having different conversations.
You are suggesting this family are what?

Too stupid to see the similarity between the death of their young relo and what sparked that latest unrest in the US. Both people saying exactly the same thing before they died?

Not smart or committed enough to go find some indigenous academic to drum up support for them?

Not victims of a what should be called a crime?

Were not having an argument simply cos you are wrong about something again. I'm just giving you s**t when you talk s**t. You have no actual defendable position or evidence to back this up. As usual.

That is when you ignore me and anyone else on this site. When they, or, I point out your mistakes and you have nothing to come back with.

You certainly don't hold back when you do gave a leg to stand on and know it.

........and here's why?

Is this man able to get a response from BLM for an ACTUAL OUTRAGE in this state?

This is the sort of serial double standards sh*t that people SHOULD be rioting about!

Im guessing that is no old age pensioner. The guy is on anti psych meds. The cops shouldn't even be called to situations like that. None the less he is still alive and at least got to court before the system laughed at him.

David Dungay isn't and didn't.

You expect a bunch of people you'll never show any solidarity with to stop what they are doing and show the same solidarity you won't give them with some random guy who doesn't even come within cooee of what they are upset about.

FFS from the sounds of that incident it was nothing much anyway. I copped bigger hidings than that before I turned 16 from cops and for * all.

There is a thirty foot avo tree about five feet from my back door. If the monolepta don't eat the flowers next month it will produce 300 fruit in the next year, each one shitloads better tasting and three to five times bigger than whatever avos you lot get regularly.

If you give me half a million bucks I could build an Avo farm worth millions in under five years. If my plans go right I'll be doing it anyway and won't need any help.

Avos are great food. Everyone should eat more of them.

What is the best way to remove a tv from a wall mounted arm?

Unscrew the plate from the back of the tv with people holding the tv?

Or from the first bolt socket on the arm? There appears to be a bolt with an Allen key end on it. (I think I did this with a smaller tv once)

Tv needs to be brought down to enable a Painter access to the wall behind

But does that avo make its way onto toast in Venezuela?

Perhaps the author is drawing an analogy - Venezuela also has the world's largest crude oil reserves but has been subject to a severe shortage of petrol at the pump for quite some time.

This story is insane. Every bit of it

There will be a mechanism that holds the tv to the bracket. Either a rod you pull out or a clip. Then you just lift the tv off the hooks.
