If we had pick 6, who would you want to take that could realistically be available?

Me personally, I'd love Denver Grainger-Barrass, incredible KPD talent who should be raring to go once Jones retires. Unsure if he'll be there at 6 though, but I'd love to trade up for him, I love what I've seen of him and he fits a real need.

IMO there are 3 main areas we need to look improve this off season.

HBF/Wingman- Someone with pace and skills.
Free Agent- Williams (GWS)
High cost target- Laird (Adel) or McGrath (Ess)
Low cost target- Witherden (Bris) or Phillips (Pies)
All ready at the club- O'Brien, Philp or Ramsay

Williams would be my first choice.

Inside mid- Someone to help Cripps
FA- B.Crouch (Adel)or Viney (Melb)
HCT- Wines (Port), Brayshaw (Melb) or Oliver (Melb)
LCT- Fiorini (GC) or Mathieson (Bris)
ATC- Kennedy, Dow or Stocker

Brayshaw would be a good fit and Melbourne need some pace maybe see if they are interested in Dow and some pick swapping.

Small Forward- Someone who can tackle and kick goals.
FA- Puopolo (Haw)
HCT- Papley (Syd)
LCT- Venables (WC), Cameron (WC) or Petruccelle (WC)
ATC- Honey or Kemp.

West Coast have about 10 small Forwards on there list and we should see who we can shake loose. I'll like to double down on small Forwards and add Venables and Cameron.

Looking at who is all ready on our list IMO small forwards are our great need.

He’s not setting the world on fire yet, but I’m curious to know why we didn’t keep McAdam when we selected him as a state league player. He’s a livewire small/medium forward, something we obviously need.
Isnt he 24 years old already. Think blues paid to much for gov but dont think mcadam would of done anything for our side

Bit of a rant below...
Our defensive pressure and ability to stop the opposition once they have a run and link up going from half back is infuriating.
The video is on repeat in my head... you'll see our players trying to chase down their players, not making up and ground and not being able to pressure the ball carriers or his potential receivers at all.

Is this a fitness issue? Positioning issue? Tactical issue? Or is it attitude and mindset? Or is our team, as quite a few have mentioned just too poor in the foot race?

Maybe we need to put footspeed higher on the agenda.

I still miss having Bryne on the team. He was going to be something.

Backline biggest deficit is pace, why players like Zac Williams etc are so important to pick up in the trade period if we can.

REALLY need that spring off half-back, love Docherty but if he gets negated by half-forwards as we've seen in Saints game etc, rip.

Very good analysis.. There is a very low cost target for the HBF/inside mid role who we are all farmiliar with but only has prob 2-3 years of footy left in him.. Bryce Gibbs. The optics would be poor but we all know he can play, loves the club still and would walk straight in and play his role. Crows will pay his salary to get him off the books.

Just an FYI, Kemp is 193cm, so certainly won't be filling a small forward role for us. Venables from WCE has had numerous concussion issues too, so I'd rule him out. Otherwise a good analysis.

Yep on the bolded. Imo, Murphy/Newnes giving us nothing through the wings and Gibbons/Betts/Cunners giving the oppo very few headaches in the forward 50 have been our main probs that need to be addressed. Hopefully Fish has finally helped with the latter.

Desperately need to address the wings, especially as i think, and have always thought, that Walsh is an onball mid. Cripps, Walsh, Setters and Dow will be our main mids from now on hopefully.

I'm all about using the short term for the long term. I'm happy where we're at in a lot of areas going forward but there are definately a couple of wing spots up for grabs imo. I'm not sold on O'Brien so can't really blame the MC there.

Dragged this over here -

Re. Fisher - I don't think he likes playing forward and would sooner be involved in the midfield.
He's contracted until '21 and I wouldn't be surprised should WC come knocking. Wasn't a bad audition on the weekend.

Re. Wings - It's hard to be sold on O'Brien given Teague and co clearly rate Newnes above him.
His endurance and kicking, are traits that should serve him well for a wing post, but it's just not happening for him right now.
Williamson still seems like an ideal type for a wing post, without us losing too much for him not playing back.
Cuningham could be interesting here also....and for me Fisher also.
I still don't understand why wingers walk into the centre stoppages. Why not race in and make themselves a viable first receive option?

Saad from Essendon is out of contract. Essendon won’t let him go but jeez wouldn’t mind him off half back
Barracked for Goddard Carlton as a kid!

there is an article about Williams in the age today, GWS offered him a 5 year deal which he hasn't taken up. Would command around $700k per year. Cap space isn't an issue for us as I understand it.

EDIT apologies the article was yesterday and has probably already been discussed at length here.

Did you see Teague's comments re: Fisher?

Paraphrasing - coaches told him they wanted to turn him into a small forward, he didn't like the idea, but after some time he came back to Teague with a new mindset that he wanted to be the best small forward he could be.

Could easily go one of two ways. Either he performs as a small forward to show what skills he does have, and perhaps drive up a contract offer from another suitor who can afford him more midfield time. Or he just accepts that at this point in time, the small forward position is his avenue to playing senior footy for the Blues, and enjoys the team success that we all hope to experience soon.

Yep i get the impression from Teague's presser that there was a standoff between him and Fish. Fish wanted/wants? to be an onballer. Teague wants him as a forward due to list balance. I think Fish was reluctant about his forward training until, as Teague put it, Fish recently rang him and committed to having a red hot crack as a forward. Teague won that standoff. That's good because we do need a small forward. Great to see him kick 4.

Whether he will want that role going forward or whether there may be a mid position for him elsewhere going forward, time will tell.

We all have our opinions on diff players, but for mine, i have never been sold on Cunners or LOB. I desperately want to be, because their strengths are what we need. But i just don't think they've got the goods in the heat of an AFL field. Once again time will tell though. Cunners is playing this whole year as a 23yo and not getting any better though.

Willo to me is set at HBF. He's doing well from his debilitating layoff and this year will hold him in great stead. He can defend, he can run and create and he competes.

:edit - i see Blue_Balls captured the Teague/Fish dynamic as well as us.

I like it.

The standard and physicality of the reserves games is more than a level below at the moment, it's hit and giggle stuff. No doubt that Dow has the talent, but I still think he's got some physical development to be eked out over the next 4 months, and that plus a proper preseason leading in to round 1 next year should have him ready to shoulder some major midfield responsibility.

We don't need to "see what we've got" with Dow, the club knows how good this kid can be, what we need to do is bring him in when he's properly prepared.
You play Dow in the Seniors for the reasons you note above re: quality of reserves matches

Maybe. But my thinking is that Dow can still work on his core skills (reading ruck taps, ground ball gets, clearing through congestion, disposal by hand and foot, tackling etc.) at the stoppages in those games, while others (ie. LOB) can't to the same extent. Dow then gets more time to fine tune his frame and build confidence in his skill execution, he gets a full preseason with a traditional lead in to next year (assuming and praying we're back to something like normal...), and then comes into Round 1 2021 fully prepared to be our main stoppage player.

That being said, if the club thinks he's ready now - brilliant, get him in. I just have a gut feel that it's a bit premature, and there's nothing to be lost by holding him back a little longer. That's all it is though, gut feel and preference on my part, I'm happy to be patient with him to get him right because I want Dow dominating games, not jogging around looking lost.

No, I didn't. Would like to have a look. Was this in the post-game presser?
We've had a few go through there and the only one whose voice lifted when asked where he'll be played, was Martin.
Not Fisher, not ECurnow, not Dow and not Cuningham....Only Martin. :)

EDIT - Going to watch it now.

Re. Williamson; I understand the HB role for him, but he always struck me as a winger that would be hard to match up on, given his size, speed, agility and kicking. The profile is there but that doesn't mean it would work.

Harks you raise an interesting point about LOB. I’m not exactly sure where he’s at. Hasn’t played in the seniors this year. Was emergency for 4 out of the first 5 games this year. Has not been an emergency since round 5. According to the club, he has not had a BOG like performance in a scratch match. Whereas, Kennedy and Philp were apparently having those performances prior to being promoted to the seniors, and Dow last weekend. Cottrell was preferred to him last week to play on the wing in the seniors. LOB is still very young but reading between the lines he doesn’t appear as close as many would like. I wonder why. This is one of the frustrations of the scratch matches - we can’t actually see how the guys are performing, except for a 2 minute highlight clip.
