Contested marking is an impessive trait. But is it more impressive than being able to find space and take a mark uncontested? Especially forward.

Dixon has only taken 8 marks on the lead all year - Hawkins is 3 times that number. Hawkins has also taken more marks i50 than Dixon as well.
For a full forward, maybe yes.

But a Centre Half Forward needs to be able to provide the "get out of jail down the line option". Where the midfielders and half backs want to have some confidence that if they go down the line its going to be marked. You're not getting on the lead into space for a pass in that situation.

Makes Dixon a much better option. Plus you know he can get on the lead in space and mark, just about anyone can do that. Its just Charlie can also smash a pack and hold onto the ball.

Yes they need to provide a get out of jail option down the line. What would be better would be if they provide that option without having to compete with 5 other players for possession.

Hawkins has taken more marks both inside and outside 50 than Dixon. Whether they are in competition with someone else or not is fairly irrelevant as someone who's job it is to be the focal point of a forward line.

Essentially what the numbers prove is that Hawkins gets more of the ball, and has to compete less with others for it.

B - Darcy Byrne Jones, Harris Andrews, Brad Shepard
HB - Nick Haynes, Tom Jonas, Jordan Ridley
C - Jack Macrae, Christian Petracca, Mitch Duncan
HF - Dustin Martin, Tom Hawkins, Jarryd Lyons
F - Tom Papley, Charlie Dixon, Charlie Cameron
R - Nic Natanui, Jack Steele, Lachie Neale
INT - Max Gawn, Lachie Whitfield, Sam Menegola, Brayden Maynard

10 stiff to not be in - Dan Butler, Tom Stewart, Todd Goldstein, Travis Boak, Josh Kelly, Hugh Mcluggage, Jayden Short, Andrew McGrath, Jacob Weitering, Caleb Daniel.

Stewart has missed too much footy, otherwise he would be thereabouts again.

Also played slightly more football too.
Iā€™d select Hawkins too fwiw.

McGrath keeps on putting his hand up, itā€™s now 7 out of 10 matches heā€™s been in the coaches votes.
I wouldn't have thought so.
He has low metres gained
Hasn't scored at all this year
Has low score involvements
Has a low disposal efficiency
Has high Clangers and turnovers count

Is a footballer that doesn't hurt. No coach is thinking about shutting him down

Coaches award is flawed because even in thumpings some losing coaches will give votes to their own players. McGrath somehow got votes in Bombers 28-91 loss to the Lions.

There are at least 16 midfielders with more coaches votes as he doesn't come up on the leader board.

Having a good season but is a long way off AA, but who know with the way the media works

Agree he isn't AA but not sure about coaches not shutting him down. Was tagged in the second half last night and Adelaide also sent a player to him.

None of what Iā€™ve said is meant to denigrate Dixon btw who is one of the most improved players in the comp and clearly the third player along with Kennedy and hawkins in the discussion

Obviously I love Dixon.

He is a man mountain that brings other forwards into the game because he usually has three defenders hanging off him and if he doesn't mark it himself, it usually means the ball will be in dispute as he is seldom out marked.

The elephant in the room is his tendency to miss easy shots. He probably should have another 10 goals to his name this year.

Until he works these issues out I think it is reasonable for him to sit slightly behind Hawkins and Kennedy.

Not really fussed if Dixon makes it or not. As th above poster said, he needs to kick the goals he's supposed to kick.

The other Port players that deserve the nod are Boak (looks like a lock), Darcy Byrne-Jones and Tom Jonas.

Only Hawkins from us, which quite amazing considering his age, size and the way the game is played.

A very big last six weeks might put a couple of others into contention, Duncan probably the most likely due to the AA delay effect where they award you one a few years after you deserved one.

Missing Jonas wtf, shows how underrated he still is

Or just shows you the competition in defence. There are 15-20 defenders who have shown that they should be up for consideration. I won't argue against Jonas but the back line is the hardest to pick.

Haynes - Andrews - Maynard
DBJ - Weitering - Saad
Boak - Steele - McCluggage
Butler - Hawkins - Martin
Cameron - Kennedy - Papley
Natinui - Pertracca - Neale
Daniel - Dixon - Maynard - McRae

I dont think a second ruck will be selected so went for the next tall forward.
FYI you put Maynard twice.

He literally got tagged last night,
Not sure you can say no coach thinks about shutting him down....

And while your big on stats, go and check his against Brisbane and youā€™ll find the reason why he got votes in that match.

And yet for all the matches he has polled votes in he still isn't even in the coaches top 20
