A spokesman said Public Health England informed the ASA "that they do not recommend the use of face masks as a means of protection from coronavirus".
"We understood there was very little evidence of widespread benefit from their use outside of clinical settings," the ASA said in a statement.
Prof Stephen Powis, NHS medical director, said: "Callous firms looking to maximise profits by pushing products that fly in the face of official advice is outright dangerous and has rightly been banned."

Seems very obvious now that either 1) western citizens were told not to use masks to save them for medical settings, because they had negligently allowed stockpiles to run low with most shipped off to Wuhan in January (but even this theory may not be correct as we were told to not even make our own to wear) or 2) western citizens now told to wear masks to give some visual hint that "something is being done" and allow confidence to return for economic reasons.

"No, GoldenSky, please don't look at all these supposedly reputable organisations, many actually charged with protecting public health, saying this stuff during the actual spread of the pandemic; no please look at what they are saying now after the horse has bolted, without providing any reasoning as to why their evidence has changed so drastically or why their previous evidence was incorrect".
Embarrassing stuff. But anyways, I agree, we need a spotters guide to anti-maskers - can you please add these organisations to your list? Important to know who, during a pandemic, was putting out false and non-nonsensical information.
Oh and the WHO advice was issue in April, but what use are facts and evidence here when we can have a good old rant about how stupid the right-wing are, right?
