This represents a 45% cut in total NRL expenses, the bulk of which will fall on head office rather than the clubs. V'Landys is trying to dress it up as greater efficiency rather than cost-cutting, but it's hard to argue that development will be as effective if they're making severe cuts to grassroots funding.

Or did the West Indies decline because they could no longer use Australian/English domestic cricket to develop their players.
I was more referring to West Indian players now not committing to play in international cricket because they can make more money playing in foreign domestic competitions. That could be a reality for the majority of countries in the not too distant future if the IPL continues to grow. If India generates all the money they can do whatever they want.

Seven have been dudded.
I agree the public comments are straight PR.

Ten & 9 have gone broke in the FTA space. 7 dont aim to repeat it & I dont blame them.
It appears Ch. 7 is willing to take legal action (for a discount in $) against CA because there is a "material" change, which constitutes a breach of contract, in the Rights' agreement.

"It is believed that Ch.7 have focused their attention on a clause which refers to CA having to provide a season of competition that is equal to others around the world, & which cannot recede in quality from one summer to the next".

"Ch.7 is considering terminating its $450m Rights agreement...".

On the AFLW you often here clubs say what ever money the AFL spend on it the returns are nearly tenfold [?] in terms of grants, sponsorship etc. I can’t see them doing anything drastic.
I am not aware of anything remotely like a tenfold return to the AFL & Clubs' AFLW expenditures of "in terms of grants, sponsorships etc.".
I thought that the AFL & Clubs roughly broke even on their AFLW expenditure (not including one-off sunk capital costs in AFLW player exclusive changerooms, icebaths etc.).

Apart from the obvious benefits (including financial) achieved by the AFLW in turbocharging female GR nos. around Australia, can you provide any links to substantiate your "tenfold" claims?

The NRL cutting its HQ expenditure from $180m pa to $100m pa is massive- more than previously predicted in the MSM. This permanent $80m pa cut lends credence to the views that the NRL are having a big $ reduction from Foxtel also, to 2027 (Nine disclosed to the ASX the big $119m Rights' discount imposed on the NRL, to 2022).

The NRL will reduce its Football Dept. cap from $6.2m - $5m pa. It previously stated that grants to Clubs would increase from 2021. IIRC, the NRL HQ spends c. $40m pa (almost $120m over the last 3 years) on Community Development (not that it seems to add great value, considering the significant long term decline in male GR contact regd. nos.).
Where will HQ make these massive $80m pa cuts?

Can anyone link here the SMH or Daily Telegraph articles on the NRL HQ cuts of $80m pa?

A League clubs intend to cut the salaries of their players between 30%-50% in season 2020-21. Many departures from the A League are predicted.
L. Zelic & C. Foster are visceral in their comments on the woes of the A League, & how it is being managed.

Incidentally, S. Hill claimed on ABC Offsiders program today that it is probable that the A League will move to a full winter season after the 2020/21 season (it will resume in Dec.2020- July 2021).
Does this indicate that Sydney & Brisbane clubs are likely to vacate the SFS & Suncorp- the surfaces will be heavily cut up by RL & RU games in winter; & smaller venues would have more atmosphere

EDIT 1:

Former All Blacks coach S. Hansen believes the only way Australia can become competitive in Wallabies' games is to reduce its Super Rugby teams to 3 (if NZ is involved still in the comp.). This would help raise the skill levels/pressure etc. closer to NZ levels.

He concedes, however, having only 3 teams has a negative effect on growing the popularity (& elite opportunities) for RU in Australia. This is the conundrum for RA.

Former respected NZRU, NRL, SANZAR, & Welsh RU boss D. Moffett also believe Australia should only have 3 teams- & he was instrumental in reviving Welsh RU by cutting its pro teams. He says a country can "shrink to greatness" ala Wales RU - Wallabies' ultimate success must also be paramount.

Interestingly, he believes fundamental changes need to be made to RU to make it safer, & to appeal more to spectators- he is devising his own rule changes, getting rid of scrums, less stoppages etc.

EDIT2:

Daily Telegraph 10.8

Optus now appears interested in the Rights for Super Rugby (whatever the local iteration becomes), Rugby Championships, & Tests. Ch.10 will also probably be involved (but what if international borders remain closed?).

Intriguingly, Foxtel is only interested in the reinvigorated Sydney Shute Shied Comp. & the Brisbane Premier Club comp; the National Club Championships, & elite Sydney & Brisbane private school 1st XV comps. (lots of high net worth fans- great for advertisers).

(Behind paywall- can anyone post here?).

Must be the worst A League GF ratings ever. By a long way.

82k on Fox, and I don't know how many watched on ABC me, but the channel had a prime time share of just 0.6% last night, beating only NITV.

Don't know where they get this information but a comment below states

A delayed telecast was shown on ABC ME where it was below 240th ranking in total people and key demos.

Awful.

The NRL failed to make the top 20 cutoff at 250K.

The pattern of AFL skewing young compared to the NRL continues on foxtel....Overall NRL games considerably higher than the Gold Coast North blockbuster but fall comfortably behind in the 16 to 39 age group.

Also, the

Note that the share of total viewers in the 16-39 group was 21.3% for the North Gold Coast game. For Collingwood Carlton it was 18.1%

For the NRL is 11.9% for the Raiders Bulldogs and at best 9.8% for the Storm sea eagles.

Note that, given at best the A League grand final got 18K for 16-39, its share in the younger cohort was at least below the Suns roos if not below both AFL games. So much for the wave of youth the A League is going to ride to popularity!

But very few sports fans interested inc soccer fans!
I don't see the current national soccer league getting any decent TV dollars anytime soon esp with the TV companies wanting to cut costs massively into the future.
Who cares investors happy to put in money. Rules regarding transfer fees have changed & game has lots of room to grow - don't need to prop expansion clubs cause game's got nowhere to go

But all the tiny little A league franchises need propping up.

The AFL does not need a cent of private ownership......wait sorry "investors" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fair point, it's obviously all going swimmingly!

They really should mention that in the ratings report.

Combination of being no 1 participation in Australia & projections for transfer fees means there's no storage of potential bidders for teams. Meanwhile teams like gws & GC only exist due to funding cause sport has limited potential

So the AFL has pretty much maintained its TV rights, hardly lost any of its 1 million club members or its nation dominating sponsorships through COVID......but it has limited potential and,...

Soccer has lost most of its TV money and sponsors and just got 80K viewers for its grand final. Several of the current owners are looking for a way out

Sport gets little coverage in media - doesn't matter. Future assured without broadcasting rights bubble

So why are you here?
Australian Soccer will always be around.....more likely than not will always have a pro league but it will barely be a pro league

Afl has grown about as big as it can get which is limited to this country & most likely just southern states. Soccer is biggest participation sport but never had power pro league - so there's room to grow there. Hence ppl still investing in sport while afl spending unprecedented money on expansion struggling to grow.

You are missing the key here - the AFL has an unprecedented amount of money.....and it can keep spending it on expansion ad infinity. It is as big as it can get in the southern states because it is near saturation without a hint of that ever changing. It's long term growth in the northern states is undeniable... as big a punch in the guts as that is to some.

Soccer is back to where it was when the A League started without the novelty. Participation is as irrelevant as ever. Devastating.

Grow where? Other than Sydney and Melbourne where do you think the A-league can expand too or reach out too?

This simplistic view that just because soccer is global the A-league must be bigger is a massive flaw nobody gives two shits about the A-league on an international scale hell it hardly gets any interest in Australia.

Pretty sure his arguments are:
1) massive transfer fees are all of as sudden going to start descending on Aus soccer (despite never having done so before)
2) participation rates are going to magically start translating into bums on seats (despite never having done so before)
