You are missing the key here - the AFL has an unprecedented amount of money.....and it can keep spending it on expansion ad infinity. It is as big as it can get in the southern states because it is near saturation without a hint of that ever changing. It's long term growth in the northern states is undeniable... as big a punch in the guts as that is to some.

Soccer is back to where it was when the A League started without the novelty. Participation is as irrelevant as ever. Devastating.

has eh!

Yes, sport generally: Participation is as irrelevant as ever.

Imagine all the damage to those ex soccer players from heading the ball.
Heading can be removed from game - will happen at junior level shortly. Participation in contact sports will decline. Probably why investors still trying to get into a league teams

"Investors*" are trying to sell off A league franchise licences for less than the Eagles take at the gate for one match

Private money not like afl clubs receiving handouts from league

I’m not sure that “there’s no money in the AFL, they have to get all their money from the AFL” is the killer argument you thought it was.

We should avoid these sorts of coversations.

I don't think we should be avoiding measured statements.

Not only is Brisbane an RL town, but it has just the one NRL team in Australia's 3rd largest city!

This is what we should be avoiding - statements that don't add anything to the conversation!
Nothing is set in stone, especially sports and there have been many changes in many sports over time.
If a huge percentage of Australians in various states support Australian Football then there is no binding reason
why Queenslanders cannot do the same. it has very little to do with NRL.

....exactly, it means the a-league is entirely reliant on private investors to keep pumping millions into their clubs. If those owners decide to pull the plug, the league collapses. And with dropping ratings, a smaller salary cap and players looking to leave for Asia, expect to see that happen more often now.

You’d much rather rely on TV rights, sponsorship, members (with member owned clubs) and asset ownership (Docklands) than the whims of millionaires for your competition to survive.

You'd think so......unless you had zero capacity to objectively assess the situation

The reality is that the "investors" of the two non-capital city franchises in the A league are both trying to offload for thrupence

No disrespect intended, I'm genuinely interested here, as I'm a big fan of the discussion of the nuances of the competing sports codes in Australia/the world.

What is your actual point in all of this? Soccer is in a better position than Australian Football? Are you here just to troll AFL fans or...?

That's correct and if you have a superior product which the AFL is the public will eventually come on board.
The Murdoch media anti AFL in Brisbane dosen't help in promoting our game either.

RL and to lesser extent RU in Australia has a massive elephant in the room - at least half of the players are now either Maoris or PNG/South Pacific Islanders which makes the game less appealing to Aussie kids who have to compete with the much bigger bodied Islander kids.

Having half the NRL full of Polynesians is a good thing, it happens because they are better. Same goes with the NFL and NBA with blacks. In the next 30 years if soccer development takes off in Africa you’ll probably see the same thing in European soccer.
Though it is very much a problem with kids and the physical size difference they have to contend with in juniors.

Well, historically Melbourne and Sydney have been Australia's biggest cities and there in lies the problem - the population imbalance.
The AFL is strong enough to have teams in all major cities.
The NRL are strong enough to have teams on the East coast.
Soccer finds support outside of Melbourne and Sydney difficult.
That is simply not true - Perth & Newcastle received great support for grand final appearances. Roar for many years drew large crowds

I have always thought it works in reverse.

AFL is the league with the opportunity to grow, and A league is not.

Soccer is everywhere, so there is nowhere for A league to grow to.

Any country will prioritise its own league, and the top European leagues first. The A league looking for a market to sell it's product to, sits behind them. Then there are a bunch of other second rate national leagues also looking to sell product.

In that market, A league has no real value, and never will.

For all it's flaws, AFL has one attribute the A league cannot and will not ever have. It's unique.

Expansion of the game itself continues, and unlike soccer, all expansion relates back to AFL. People like pippen have been lolling at the idea of the growth overseas of footy for years, and for all those years, its kept growing. Semi pro overseas leagues will occur, probably not for 20 years, but it will happen.

Interesting fact, league has pro/semi pro teams in North America, but footy actually has more players there than league does, it's just that footy is a harder game to play well.

So, the entire world is a growth market for AFL.

A- leagues growth market is Tasmania.

Afl is spending more money than any sport in history propping up expansion teams in area where game has been played for 100 years & been live on FTA for 40 years.
Now you going to take over world!!! Not enough money in existence

So we've got Pippen94 projecting his bigotries again implying AFL fans are racist

Simply means ppl willing to bet thier own money on the game.

It means Australian soccer can barely sustain a bare-bones professional competition even with private ownership

AFL is spending money it self generates,as it always has, and it has grown continuously (until this COVID year) at a massive rate for the last three decades. Australian soccer barely has the resources it had when the A League started.

Jatz destroyed your ridiculous claim that the AFL has nowhere to grow - there was precisely zero suggestion it was going to take over the world. All you have is strawman.

Hows that working for them now?

Afl is spending more money than any sport in history propping up expansion teams in area where game has been played for 100 years & been live on FTA for 40 years.

To be fair, this is mostly because the AFL is pretty much the only major competition that funds its own expansion teams too.

Now you going to take over world!!! Not enough money in existence

no one ever suggested such a thing.
