An article in the HUN today via Foxsports :

BLUES FACING UPHILL BATTLE TO LURE PAPLEY HOME

Sydney star Tom Papley’s desire to return home has reportedly softened, as Carlton face a huge battle to get him to the club given his superb 2020 season.

Papley lodged a failed trade request to get to the Blues at the end of last year, but has returned to the Swans in elite form with 22 goals so far this season.

His trade value appears to have gone up significantly, with two first-round picks a fair asking price for the 24-year-old.

The Herald Sun reports key Blues defender Caleb Marchbank is viewed as gettable by other clubs, while the Blues currently hold pick 7, which alone won’t be enough to get Papley to the club.

Suggested in the article is a potential trade of young midfielder Paddy Dow, who has struggled with form and injury since being taken with the third pick in the 2017 draft.

Is there a journo lurking here for material or is there more to this rumour than originally considered ??

He’s a hard nut but his foot skills make him a liability. I wonder if it’s too late to improve those skills.

Same was said about Sam Frost but he improved massively this year. He and Day have been wonderful additions.

I always wonder about whether a new coach can correct skill deficiencies or its too late by the time they reach the AFL.

Agree. I’m glad Teague is playing him, and hopefully he continues to do so for the remainder of the year.

He looks panicky when he gets the ball, and as a result his disposal is rushed and errant.

Carlton fans would be hoping it’s a confidence thing but he sure doesn’t look like Pendles over the ball.

He’s worth keeping for another year, not just because at the current market rate they would get very little in return for him, and there’s not much below him in that Carlton list. But they would hope to see a swift uptick in form next year for him to continue his career at the Blues.

Anyone would take Parish/Francis in a heartbeat over Dow and Lochie O'Brien.

Plenty of question marks over their careers. Such as, who has been the bigger bust? It's hard to split the two, but I'm leaning towards Dow.
Francis has got it hands down for your mob. Parish is a B grader so well done on that👌 The infuriating thing for Essendon fans would be that they were taken with consecutive picks (5&6) by Dodo and he still stuffed it up. I mean could have had Weidemann, McKay, Curnow, Greasham, Dunkley..

Dow and O’Brien are in their third year. Pretty sure you didn’t write off your spuds after 3 years so come back to me at the end of 2022 and we’ll see how they’re tracking.

What if we dont follow the local amateur league to know how Dow went to get back to you?

Bahahaha if Parish is a B grader then wtf are Dow and O'Brien? Just face it, they're busts mate. We all make mistakes, just like SOS did when he must've been on the piss and thought those two could be footballers. They can join the ranks of Petrevski-Seton, Viojo-Rainbow, Liam Stocker etc who belong on the scrap heap.

Lol if we're going to sit around and re-draft players based on hindsight then we'd be here all night assessing Carlton's failures. Maybe could start with Sam Walsh? Would be lucky to go top 10 if that draft was done again. Must be hard to sit back and see the King brothers clunking big marks or Bailey Smith stiff-arming blokes whilst Sam Walsh is playing bruise-free outside footy. What's his preferred foot btw? They both look like crap - I just assumed he hasn't picked one yet.

Frost never had poor skills as such, he just had god awful decision making and a massive over belief in his own abilities. Trying to kick like he was Dustin Martin or Luke Hodge, running out of defence like he was Andrew McLeod.

Clarkson has basically just got him to be a restrained ball user, which he could always do.

Maybe Dow gets composure with experience but right now even basic skills he can't execute. It's not the decision he makes, it's just poor kicking. No AFL senior coach is changing how a player kicks a ball lol that is intense time management on biomechanics. You can however reinforce behaviours you want I.e. Call Frost a dumb campaigner when he tries a 20 meter dash and 60 meter kick across goal.

Pretty well summed up I'd say by anyone who is not overly pro or anti Carlton.

Value at an all time low, worth persisting with due to some good qualities, but overall not showing the signs you'd expect. I think it is partly composure, partly skill, maybe he can be hidden away as an inside mid with another preseason in the gym.

I don’t think anyone can get continuity from those scrimmages so if Dow was injured to begin with it would have been very hard to come back from.

It’s amazing what some fitness will do for skills work. Having that split extra second can make all the difference in not feeling as rushed and being able to make the right decision and then delivering.

If he goes to another club; He will get his body right, come in fully fit and everyone will think it’s master coaching on the new club’s behalf when he starts to perform to the expectations of a top 5 pick. Sure, a coach will perhaps adjust a role or give some guidance around how to take the next steps, but mostly that will come from self development.

My opinion, of course- Carlton would be better off keeping him if they can. Will be very difficult if he wants out but if it’s just opportunity he wants (as opposed to money/conflicts working with people etc) I’m sure you can map out that plan to get him right for round 1 next year and the rest should follow.

You should apply the 24 hr rule before you post little Miss Schizenhouzen.

Walsh is having a cracker of a year after a slow start. Has polled votes from the coaches in his last three games, and will poll more votes as our best player last night. I don’t think many, including AFL coaches would agree with your mindless opinion that he’s crap.

Dow & O’Brien have had poor years and could well be busts, but I’m confident the club will develop them in to good AFL footy players. After all Dow has missed six months with a knee in his third year of footy, you know, like when Francis did his back and you made excuses for him😜.

As far as your other big statement; as an Essendon fan you would be a subject matter expert on players who can’t kick on their opposite side - Heppel, Merrett, and the top of the list Shiel are quite comedic when trying to use their right peg. Shiel on Thursday night was comedy gold!
