Pathetic to love the game and the team, but disagree with how it's run?

We're all allowed to have opinions about how the swans have been ran, you've expressed many opinions about how the bloods have chosen their coaches, but as soon as someone expresses an opinion about the AFL? It makes you want to spew?

Pretty hypocritical.

Stadium size is less relevant when only around 35-40% of tickets are club members for the two playing teams at the MCG. The rest is corporate, AFL members, MCC members and a spattering of others.

Reality is if you held the Grand Final or one of the legs at say Homebush then you’d probably end up with as many, if not more actual club members attending (despite the stadium being smaller).

I don't think that would be the case. The AFL would still control ticketing if the game was moved around and they would still look to give as many tickets (if not more) to the non competing clubs (which are the tickets that end up in the hands of the corporates) as they have always done as that is a big money spinner for all 18 clubs. So any gain by not having the MCC or AFL members to allocate tickets for would be offset by the fact the corporate and competing club allocations as they stand allow for 52k fans to attend currently. Only two grounds (Optus and ANZ) would allow for an increase in tickets available and one of those ground is hardly suitable and the other is a minor increase.

Its a myth that playing the game away from the MCG would result in more tickets going to real fans, in fact it would make it harder for real fans to attend as the AFL would look to keep the amount of ticket revenue the same as the MCG and would look to increase pricing to make up the difference. What would be an average of $400 a ticket now would be close to double to be played elsewhere.

There is more to playing the Grand Final away from the MCG than meets the eye.

Fair points. I was looking at it through the lens of a 3 game series though so it wouldn’t need to replace the MCG revenue, it would be in addition to it (you could still be right, just clarifying).

Hard to see a stand alone grand final being shared around (currently forced situation aside) any time soon though and all your points are spot on in relation to a stand alone grand final.

Was for a stand alone GF.

The AFLPA will never agree to a 3 game GF due to the toll it would take on the players and the fact you can't guarantee the 3rd game every year means the financials will never stack up.

We got rid of the Grand Final replay for a reason remember.

It’s the height of ignorance arrogance short sightedness and cronyism that afl would LOCK MCG as permanent GF fixture for 50 years in what is supposed to be a national competition. It just might be that 30 years from now Sydney will be the afl centre of the country.

Bottom line they want a national competition for VIC ego only not in genuine interest of nationalising the game. All part of this vic centric bias that undermines the AFL completely ......biased umpiring, biased afl administration giving bans to us for following the rules, biased finals venues. Unless there is genuine change it will always be a vic competition
It's the home of AFL

Wherever the gf is played, it will fast become irrelevant with the declining health of the game at grassroots....It was already on the greasy slope down before Covid, but with little or no kids footy this year, (in Victoria) they have to make a very strong multi year push to win back the grassroots imo....it’s been taken for granted for too long and the kids are taking up other things...the biggest mistake is to assume things will return to the way they were...gf should be on neutral territory...Expecting Papley to fire against the blues...

Are you involved at grass roots ?

I'm Victorian and have no plans to live outside of Melbourne and I would love to see the conclusion of a national competition go around the nation

But then again, I think too logically for some

My club will have good junior numbers. Why pick out Aussie Rules , other sports might have the same issues.

Junior participation for most sports is going to drop compared to 2019. At my fencing club we expect to have 30% less junior fencers next year, yes it's a different sport but several junior AFL programs will see similar drop offs.

Maybe this has already been posted somewhere? But an analysis of Sydney and Hawthorn's recent list management.

Nothing particularly new or interesting, but decent considering the usual standard of AFL journalism when it comes to our team.

They refer to our academy as a 'huge advantage', which is true, but there is never any mention of the huge disadvantage faced by Northern clubs in trying to attract and retain players.
