Review Round 16, 2020 vs North Melbourne

A comfortable 6-goal win that could've been 10 if we'd kicked straight, uninspiring but better than the past two weeks. We were clearly in control for the entirety of the game and it was a lazy 6 goals in the third quarter when we decided to start running the ball instead of missing targets by foot. Both teams clearly didn't have their kicking boots on today with so many fumbles and slips as well. Reckon it was a lot more slippery on the deck than what we could see.

One thing became really clear to me tonight: our core of Boak, Wines, Robbie, SPP, Rockliff, Amon, DBJ, Charlie and Butters have been carrying us during this run of uninspiring wins versus lesser teams. It's really important we've got that core all playing consistent footy and that it's enough to get us over the line most weeks. Jonas, McKenzie and Hartlett are servicable pretty much day-in day-out as well.

What's concerning is our bottom half: Motlop, Sutcliffe, Farrell all non-existent. Marshall and Duursma were honest triers, especially Duursma in and under, but we should be expecting to see a little more from them with the talent they have. Burton injured again is so disappointing, he's probably done for the season now, would be a risk to play him in finals. These blokes on the edge need to find some form fast or be out of the team come finals.

Butters is a jet, he's been one of our best this season and I love his attack on the footy, but that bump could cost us bad. He should've tackled instead of bumped, it didn't look good and Simpkin didn't play out the match. It's going to be more than a week taking into account the Port tax, and missing crucial games against Essendon and Collingwood that can lock in our top-2 spot is a big disappointment for Zak. Still, couldn't help a s**t-eating grin when Ziebell tried to take out Butters and he came off worse, shades of Biglands v Pickett! He hit about half a dozen other perfectly legal bumps tonight, it was just unfortunate that one of them was off. Don't stop being our crazy little kamikaze kid Zak, just learn when to tackle instead.

To end on a positive, SPP nailing two perfect piercing kicks to forwards on the lead back-to-back shows just how far his disposal has come this season. Ollie shanked the ball a bit but with 30 possies and 2 goals, the Bash Brothers have showed they are a little more than just their big bodies this year. In great form heading into finals.

Shame that Butters clipped the north clown high - takes some real gas out of the tank. This said, have to love the Butters physical presence - 19, smallest in our team, and an absoloute wrecking ball. How was that tackle when he took down Goldstein - looked like a hyena taking down a wildebeest and with a similar laugh. Then Ziebell tries to lay him out, Ziebell ends up bent over and Zak left grinning again. He’s going to be as dangerous as Lethal Leigh

Did enough to get the win in slippery, horrible conditions. They look pretty flat. Just need to keep winning and hit the finals running after a proper week off. Boak another 10 coaches and 3 Brownlow votes surely. A chance for both awards still which is very exciting. Wines form is fantastic. Dissapointing that we will be missing butters and burton for the next two I would think. Fingers crossed it’s not any longer for either of them because they are both important players.

Perhaps I have been a bit negative the last month with how we are playing and again tonight, but that is because I don’t want us to accept mediocrity.

Like it or not, but if we assume we’re coming into a premiership window, nothing can be assumed and it will bite use on the foot. This may be our best chance at a premiership for sometime. We are top, essentially guaranteed a top 2 with one more win, or Atleast top 4 and the double chance which is rare and there is no clear premiership favourite for once. This can easily be our year and we’ve waited 16 years to say that.

Yes we won by 6 goals. However we only played about 10 minutes of good footy where we slotted 5 quick goals to build that lead in the third.

10 minutes in a whole game against the 17th team.... that’s not good enough while we lost 2/4 qtrs and also started slow again.

It’s all well and good putting the breaks on with a lead if we know we can start the next game at a high intensity, however we have shown years on end we start slow and we bring that poor intensity into the next game. Only way to stop that, finish games with the right mentality and don’t take the foot off the pedal.

For large periods of the game we lost the centre bounce. Perhaps due to Lycett or our Mids were switched off at times. With an undersized defence, we simply cannot allow that. We’re lucky it was only North and we got on top for periods, but we can’t let teams like Richmond and WCE have an easy run out of the middle.

Our defensive structure has been off for weeks. Too easily tonight and same as the last month, teams have transitioned from defence to attack too easily and caught us out the back. Again, lucky it was only North and they let us off the hook but other teams won’t.

Our forward line still isn’t functioning. We need a third tall, either Ladhams, Westhoff or Giorgiades in next week. Unfortunately, likely for butters.

Sutcliffe and Motlop offered next too nothing and should be straight out as well.

Rozee needs to start getting his head back in the game. Seemed to have his movement back but again going for the trick shots or fancy work over the simple stuff and drop punts.

Obviously it’s good too get a 6 goal win, but we need a lot of improvement to make an impact come finals. I would accept switching on and off for a cruise game if it was a 1 off. We have been poor against the swans, hawks and now half the game against north and we need to do better.

Poor attitude breeds poor attitude and not a premiership attitude. We may not be top for another 10 years so we need to take our chances now and not just assume more chances will come.

How the * does North Melbourne get away with not performing a concussion test? From the moment they started viewing the vision and ruled out Simpkin based on that you knew their primary objective was to stitch up Butters. Maybe they're pissed off at Port for giving them Polec.

Really feel for Burto, thats probably him done for the year.
Boak is just a bloody great footballer.
Pleasing to see Ollie getting back into some decent form.
Need more output from our bottom 6 if we are going to seriously challenge this year.
Love how Butters plays on the edge. It’s a game of inches, but he‘ll miss the next 2 unfortunatel.

lot more impressive than the Sydney win for mine, Boak was huge another 3 votes, need another tall didn't like how much Marshall was down back (may be partially due to him not kicking a goal cost me my 6 leg multi)

Meh. Port are in such a weird place

we’re top of the ladder and going into finals with a likely top 2 or certainly top 4 and we’ve played some stunning football at times

but we’ve also been pretty ordinary the second half of the year, just scratching out wins against plenty of poor teams and notching up goalless qtrs regularly.

hinkleys bizarrely awesome selection decisions at the start of the year have gotten worse and worse every week to the point we regressed to playing a similar structure tonight that lost us plenty of games in the past and destroyed the confidence of plenty of our young players.

Rozees regression from freak talent to second guessing himself in the most common situations is sad and concerning.

hopefully butters only gets 1-2 games.

Clubs have been fined before, for not doing test.

Best part about our forward line in the second quarter
