If our government wanted to take over running football down would the afl have to step aside and let us do it or could they just tell us no ?

all it takes is enough teams and leagues to deaffiliate with the league.

WA did it before they had AFL teams. And if the Government is content for the AFL to run footy, then as a private body the AFl can do whatever the hell it wants.

The AFL receives government monies to assist with its activities in the state. So it has obligations. Contracts etc. So no it cant do whatever the hell it wants. Also just ask the players association.

Im sure youve seen said contract. The Government being displeased isnt the same thing as claiming a breach of contract. And unless there is, then yes they as a private organisation can pretty much make their own decisions regarding how it runs AFL Tasmania, which it owns outright.

Why would you assume that?

The decision was made yesterday. The immediate government reaction was surprise & displeasure. That's all at this stage. Who knows what action might result. Given the current situation with the Pandemic & economic issues, I don't think they'll start a high court action over it just yet.

1. More good news for the Tas. 19th team Bid in 2025.

Another MSM AF expert (following T. Watson, C. Wilson, G. Whately etc.) is predicting Thurs. night matches almost every week will become permanent, because they are so valuable. A 19 team comp. creates 11 extra H & A games pa- remove the low rating Sat. twilight Docklands game completely, & move them all to Thur. night.
In addition to 22 Thurs. night games from 2021, some extra Prime Time games also on Wed. night or Monday night are a good possibility- very lucrative.

Why mid-week AFL matches should be the new normal

The AFL may have had no option but to schedule a footy feast because of COVID-19, but there is no reason why mid-week matches should not continue next season.

Would another network want to bid soley for these nights ie they become the Monday Night &/or Thursday Night "specialist".
C. Wilson said in 2017 that an AFL match that rates 1m+ viewers is each worth c. $1m for broadcasters.

Can someone provide her AF achievements in Tas. -obviously would be impressive on her CV.
(Tas. Devils full time in the Vic. U18 NAB League is definitely a plus).

Given the fact we're in the middle of a pandemic & the outcome is far from decided, anything could yet happen.

Previous pandemics of such magnitude have taken a number of years to settle. The infection tends to wax & wane a few times, hence the Vics 2nd wave. The severity both health & economically may not yet be fully realised. We simply don't know.

Hopes for a vaccine may be realised in months but take much longer to take effect. Just how effective such medication will be is also up for grabs.. Again we don't know.

One thing is for sure, the People & Government have the desire & the facility for a new club.

I'd just like to add that Victoria isn't getting all its immigrants from overseas, they gained 13 000 from net interstate migration last year. The bulk is from overseas, but not all. Tasmania also gets more of its immigrants from overseas than interstate.

There are skilled migrant visas that require people to settle in regional areas, one of which is Tasmania.

Yep, it's a reach. I lived in Tasmania for 21 years and I could count on 1 hand the amount of people who know a professional basketball player not named Michael Jordan.

I think with Foxtel & the interwebby thing now days, international sports & the NBA is a thing with the younger ones. Oldies like me hardly ever saw NBA back in the day. Its a bit different now.

Basketball will never get close to Aussie Rules in any state.

But...NBA is extremely popular with a lot of people 30 and under. The NBL has tried to jump on the back of this support with the younger crowd and have done a decent job. Their crowd numbers have been increasing year on year for probably 5 years, and the NBL (in Melbourne at least) is seen as a very affordable family-friendly day/afternoon out.

I'm not into it myself, but for the past week my phone has been pinging with messages in group chats of mates talking about the NBA playoffs.

They certainly don't get that excited about the footy.

Cairns had a number of sell-outs last year and are getting an upgraded convention centre.

Not number 1 sports, true, and I don't think Tassie will suddenly become NBL mad. But it will grow a sport which is already popular down here. basketball itself is a largish sport in Australia. Just look at the number of posts on Bigfooty. A lot on the NBA, yes, but it is the 3rd biggest after cricket and soccer. insert the 2 rugbys, and you would think it is the 7th largest in Australia overall, but always around the 4-5th in every state.

Cairns gets great support locally and generally over the years been very competitive on court punching well above its weight they are a community based member owned club , Wollongong has always struggled for support barely keeping there head above water a lot of that has been down to having extremely unstable owners

It’s a lot different environment now though you’re comment is also reasonable inaccurate basketball was very popular in Tasmania in the mid nineties like it was in the rest of Australia it’s always had good participation in juniors but over the last couple years that has skyrocketed while football has gone downwards rapidly you see the support the Hobart chargers were getting during there school clinics and getting crowds in the thousands for seabl-nbl1 games . The afl will always have support down here due to how passionate people are about there clubs but at a junior level football is struggling big time with the nbl team coming this will put more pressure on

Completely different soccer has always been ran extremely poorly in Australia The is the complete opposite these days the nbl is owned but one of the smartest most successful businesses man in Australia

Well, yeh, maybe, well, no, not really.
Every 2nd tier sport reckons they don't get the big bucks because they're not run as well as the AFL.
But the truth is, they don't get the big bucks because they don't have the depth of support that the AFL has.
Doesn't matter who is running it, doesn't matter what the governance structures are, none of that matters.
Can you put a game on tomorrow and immediately get lots of eyeballs, that's all that matters.
As if any of us who follow the AFL give a damn about who is the CEO, or who is chairman of the board, who is on the board, we actually don't care, it's not important. All we care about is when our team is playing next.
