if you hurt an official in any dangerous act not relating to general play in any sport, you would be sent off or dismissed or whatever the rule is in that sport. Tennis is not special in that regard.

Novak didnt need to hit the ball backwards. He choose to, he hit an official and so he gets hit with the consequences. He was warned about this. it wasn't even the first time he did it in the match. This time, his luck run out.

every time you act out in anger, be it racquet or ball smash, or as Nalbandian found out, kicking an advertisement board, you play the odds that you hit someone and hurt them and you lose the match, points and prize money.

Umm, yeah they do. Players cop fines for smashing racquets and have been defaulted before for the same.

If he vented his frustration and hit it at the net, would have chanced his arm at hitting a ball boy and ball girl which would result in a DQ too (its happened before).
