Review Round 16 - vs Brisbane @ The Gabba (9/9/20 at 7:10pm)

I thought Noah Anderson was good again last night, a bit fumbly early but he had a good game I thought. He's been good 3/4 weeks as an inside mid, it's exciting. He and Rowell will clearly be our number 1 and 2 midfielders. Felt like Anderson really put it on himself to change the momentum. It's a small win in a big loss but is really exciting.

Corbett was good again, backed up his game vs north so that's great for him.

As for the rest... really, really poor. We need to learn to play keepys off, as I understand there are those with a license and those without who play percentages, but our players with licenses were blazing away, trying to bite off more then they could chew because of the pressure brisbane were applying.

I thought that's probably the best I've seen Brisbane, that felt like finals pressure and we were not upto it, but one game doesn't make you go away from everything that has been working for us this year. Rowell and Anderson are gonna be absolute A grade midfielders for the next decade, so we need to assist them.

Anderson has been brilliant the past month (bar Carlton game)
He has a better work rate then the majority of our mids already, Weller, Fiorini, Brodie etc could learn something from Noah's work rate and appetite thats for sure

Very disappointing and poor performance. Probably the worst performance of the season not counting Carlton's game.

Lions played a great game. Lost 2 players, McCarthy one one leg and still brought a real heat on us the whole game. They had a really good plan and did their homework on our players and our game plan. I was really surprised how good physically Lions players looked after 5 days break when against Collingwood after 10 days break they struggled and looked exhausted.

I agree, we did not cope with the heat and as a result fumbled and turned over the ball but I also think we were off the required work rate. When the game started I did not see any real pressure from us. By the way, Suns were rank #5 in pressure before the game. It did look a bit similar to the game against GWS. Is the preparation after a long break a part of the problem?

People talk about adding B Crouch into middle. I believe he would make no difference yesterday. Would playing B Crouch, Greenwood, Swallow together or replacing Swallow/Greenwoood with B Crouch help? All similar players. Lions played great footy and simply dominated while Suns were way off, did not bring the required intensity and crumbled under pressure. I don’t think any Suns player played at Lions level. Some tried hard - Powell, Anderson. I would probably nominate Corbett as our best player. Pretty ironic, hey :)

We do play an incredibly young team. Not even close to any other team. They struggled a great deal yesterday. Hopefully, we will start reaping the benefits from playing so many kids at the same time next year.

Fagan complaining about bruises and scratches was entertaining. Like all players don’t have them. Stay classy Fagan especially after a comprehensive win.

Honestly, I am glad I have an optimistic view on our future. Reading all these negative comments here over and over is depressing.

It will be interesting to see how we go against Collingwood.

I know a KPD is high on many supporters wish lists but I’d be stoked if we drafted Will Phillips who played with Rowelly and Noah at Oakleigh. He’s not a big midfielder but he has been very impressive from what I’ve seen of him. Games are won and lost in the midfield and we’re still losing too many games because we can’t match it with the teams that put a lot of class through there.

At this rate if Adelaide, North, Swans and Hawks all try and get Key's positions which they need more than an inside mid, i would love to draft Will Phillips. He is also ready made and wow imagine the chemistry between Rowell Anderson and Phillips. He would have to rename ourselves the Gold Coast Chargers.

Another mid in that range if Phillips is taken would be Nathan O'Driscoll, 187cm Midfielder who has played at half back, good contested game endurance and penetrating kick. He don't have many penetrating kicks besides Lukosius.

I don't know much about him, but we do seem to be all about 'cohesion' atm. Is he an upgrade on Miller? Similar type?

Upgrade over Miller -same physical dimensions, but to me he is a bit of a cross between Prestia / Lachie Neale in game style. A smaller clearance specialist, smooth mover, hard at the ball and the man. Kicking is adequate without being elite.

Should enjoy seeing him work with Rowell and Anderson in the highlights.

With Greenwood and Miller being around 28yo there is still a need to stock up on elite midfielders

Touk is 24, entering his prime

That's 3 future mids with 7+ years left in them - Miller & Rowell - with Anderson able to play on the outside to provide flexibility.

That's not enough unless they can land an experienced gun mid in FA / Trade period.

Jack Bowes can and should go in there, he is ready.

I would love to get a gun but being realistic we are gonna get some depth player like Atkins instead of a Crouch/Perryman

Rankine and Flanders can swap with Anderson and swallow for stint in midfield ,
If Phillip able to play wingback or forward I go for him .

He's basically matt rowell of this class so he'll be in the guts

As bad as Fiorini was this year, he clearly didn't get a proper chance at it. We have basically played Miller Greenwood Swallow all year so let's see what Fiorini can do in a hopefully* proper season next year.

Nah too slow I will ship him out for future 2nd . Florini is not worth his salary to keep.

Then No , need to get winger and wingback or Halfback . If can get a good one from state league the better .
We are better off trading for them, i've suggested on a different thread we downgrade out pick 5 for say 10 & 12 (The same formula St Kilda used last year to get Brad Hill and Dougal Howard)

With 2 x 10-22 picks we could land that winger and half back, Laird, Perryman, B. Smith, Hunter to name a few. I'm a big fan of Perryman and GWS wouldn't be too hard to deal with

I will package round 1 and 2 second Rd pick for Perryman, one of Caldwell and Halloran . If prelisted academy count as pick selection with one future 2nd coming back . Hunter type not going to move .

The Victorian I think it was called for Rankine to be dropped after the RICHmond Game and I backed him and someone else I can’t remember. There was a lot of mirth and kickback.
The Vic was right. Would have done him a world of good.

Done.
Perryman, clean with elite skills and composure. Can play wing/midfield/half back and half forward (Goals)
Caldwell, Strong and speedy, natural ball winner
O'Hallaran, Endurance and leader.

All available and will be awesome players. I would take Perryman and Caldwell all day everyday.

After the Blues game he was being fancy, he was awesome against North doing the basics well, then back to trying to do too much.

I don't think they want to waste getting games into him to make a point, unless he does this in the next game as well and is not taking feedback from the coaches.

Kellie Underwood... your not a bad commentator because your female, your bad because you just said that was Corbett's first goal for the season. It was his 2nd goal for the game.

Her commentary isn't as shithouse as your grammar, mate.

We need a tried and tested mid not another drafted kid. We need a solid strong body to help Rowell and Anderson, Spitta can’t do it.

Trade our first pick for for the best mid we can get aged around mid 20’s. Not sure who maybe Billing’s, Duncan or Viney????

I don't get it help out Rowell and Anderson ? You can only help them by playing them in AFL , a team can only fit limited inside mid for best 22 in AFL everyweek , other need to play reserve ,maybe demote swallow , greenwood , Miller, play reserve or play without wing and wingback , everybody be inside mid .
Nathan Broad , zac Williams type is a priority. Get player to replace Pearce henley and harbrow position.

I think that's right. In addition I'd think we need to put our thinking caps on and work out how Dave fits for another couple — he's important to keep out there but what are his capabilities and how do we maximise that without it hurting us. If he's in our mids next year, our mids are not very good.

I think patient is the key , look at Adam Cerra and Brayshaw need 3 season playing AFL to see their potential with fyfe , Mundy and Walters rotate mid and forward position . LDU only start to show something , people just impatient want a fast 50/50 solution .
