The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.

That team came out exhausted.
Morning flight from Gold Coast, haven't slept in their beds for weeks.
You'll say that's the same for all teams, but Crows had a longer break and were at home.

Is it really that different to similar efforts we've served up over the last 24 months without those excuses?

Pretty happy, been saying for a while we need some other tactically inclined coaches to help Leon out. Leave Leon for player relationships

Can’t help but feel our coach should be the one who is tactically inclined.

All I can say is I hope there’s some out clauses in the contract.

As for assistants, I hope we get some quality in there but we have supposedly the smallest soft cap spending of all the clubs so.....

We lost Nicks, bring back Choco as part of the coaching team

Choco left because he was coaching but in the background behind Sheeds.

He won’t come back just to do the same for his replacement I wouldn’t think.

Was always disappointed Choco never got his go at this team when in form.

I'd be happy with Ross Lyon running the box and Leon on the boundary but I doubt the budget can afford it. Left field somebody like James Hird if he was in the head space to do it in the same setup, tactically he was well regarded. Without Covid he could still live in Melb and do 3 days a week in Sydney. Outside of the spotlight it might work ok, players would respect somebody of his ilk and what he achieved in his playing days.

I remember joining the others in the Richmond forums ripping strips off Dimma in 2016 for not having a second game plan. The club kept Dimma but changed all the assistants around him in particular bringing Neil Balme who was around when Collingwood and Geelong were winning premierships. The last 4 years have been pretty good.

All coaches in the end will be judged on performance and usually on a fairly short timetable, most coaches get sacked eventually.

I don't know if you have a good coach but I do know you have an exceptional list on paper.

Maybe the list is too good and that might be part of the problem. Needing to keep so many elite players has become almost the highest priority for the club. How many 25 to 30 possession per game players do you need on the field when the team averages 300 possessions a game in 2020?

Richmond has been successful with many less gifted players but players who are plug and play who fulfill specific roles well.

Maybe GWS need fewer guys who are gifted at a dozen things, and more players who can do only 3 or 4 things but do them exceptionally.

Let some of the gun players go and burn other clubs salary caps and do what you have done with Matt De Boar (a total pain in the butt and the best tagger in the game). Create specialists to support rather than supplant your many guns.

Just my thoughts.

Here’s hoping the board gets some heat for the reappointment of Leon. They seem to have got a free hit so far.
Could he have lost the list? I’m hoping not, but have my fears. Fingers crossed for 2021.

The new contract is possibly the worst decision in the clubs history.
The plays definitely don’t look like they are playing for him

Geez, pretty poor for professional journalists. In a year that we failed to make finals - 'there's something wrong there' is pretty ******* obvious. You job as a journo is to analyse what!

I've never been a huge proponent of the 'bash the coach' approach. However, I have been very disappointed by the performances this year and the coach has to take a fair degree of responsibility. Nevertheless, it's been the strangest year all over, so I'm keeping my powder dry on coaches and players to see how they all respond next year.

Common misconception - their job is to get people to view as many of their articles as possible. Putting more effort into articles runs counter to that.

during his time at Geelong every player and coach when asked "which team mate / player will be a senior coach one day?" all without fail or hesitation said Stevie J.

as GG said - Tobes came on leaps & bounds - but he also spent a lot of time with the AFLW girls and their play improved too.

this is a good move

Thought this was good analysis:

What Didn’t Work

The Giants suffered from poor transition both offensively and defensively in 2020.

Offensively the Giants were the worst team in the competition for moving the ball the length of the field. The move of Lachie Whitfield to half-back helped in the second half of the season, but a lack of transition from midfielders and forwards to get back to provide support and outlets hurt the Giants ball movement.

Conversely, when the Giants did go forward, their midfield and backs were unable to compress the ground to lock the ball in their forward half. GWS ranked in the bottom four for allowing their opposition to move the ball the length of the field and 17th for time in forward half.

Pre-Season Focus

Transition running and setting the ground up offensively and defensively will be a big focus for GWS.

Offensively the Giants need to find the ball movement method that best suits their personnel.

With the retirement of Sam Jacobs and Shane Mumford turning 34 during the season, the Giants have a major question mark around their ruck stocks.

Some great ocntributions here. I like the SJ move. The forward line set up was poor this year. We didn't have that blocking or cohension set up at all. SJ will address that.

Agree with the analysis of our transition. I think it is partly the key distributors (LW were tied up in the back half so much the second kick always struggled... and also our set up out of defence. We need some work on transition in the off season absolutely

Stunned the SEN has a good write up.

Pretty much bang on.
